Weekly Updates
Kaw Families,
We had a great first week back. As I visited classrooms throughout the week I could see that students and teachers were having fun and were excited to be back. Below are a few updates as we start our first full week of school.
1. Bells- we are hoping to have working bells and intercoms in the very near future. We have a plan in place for communication throughout the building in the event of an emergency or lockdown situation in the meantime.
2. Class schedule this week- Monday (A), Tuesday (E), Wednesday (O), Thursday (E), Friday (O)
2. Construction- the theater is still under construction and we have a few other smaller projects that are getting finished up but we are getting close to having everything done. The construction crews have been working very hard to make sure everything is done right.
3. 10th and 11th grade students, the endowment dual credit scholarship will be available this semester to possibly help pay for costs of Highland CC or Washburn Tech classes you are taking this semester. You can get more information about this scholarship from Mr. Scherschligt. The deadline is 8/29 to submit an application.
4. Seniors, requests to graduate at semester must be submitted to Mr. Scherschligt by 8/29. See him for more information and to check if you are eligible to graduate early.

Homecoming Fundraiser
Instead of ticketing the homecoming dance this year we will be asking parents to donate $10 per kid attending the dance. We did this last year and it worked out really well. The plan is to have a DJ and food available to everyone who attends the dance. We have no funds left over from last year, so all money will be used directly on the dance. Thanks and please reach out to Mr. Franzitta (jfranzitta@usd343.org) if you have any questions.

AI Usage Policy
As the use of AI becomes increasingly prevalent in education it is important that we are on the same page when it comes to student usage. Please refer to the student handbook as a reference for acceptable use of AI. In any case of suspected abuse of AI the teacher will grade the student based off the skill or knowledge possessed by that student. This will be done by conducting a verbal assessment, a supervised written or typed assessment, or by another alternative teacher approved method. Ultimately, the teacher will determine the best way to assess the actual mastery of the content. Every teacher will address the use of AI in their classrooms at the beginning of the school year and we will all continue to learn how to best use it in the school setting as we move forward.
Cell Phone Policy
PLHS will be strictly enforcing the cell phone policy that is set forth in the student handbook this year. While in class students are not to have phones out. They may use them during breaks, lunch, and before/after school. This is a school wide policy and will not be a "classroom by classroom" discretionary decision. Please review the handbook for expectations/consequences for not following the policy. Please help us by supporting this policy as we believe it is best for all of our students.
Hallways
Parking
With our main office being relocated to the south side of the building we will reserve the front row of parking for staff. Students should not park in the row closest to the building.
Fall Sports Practice!
The first day of Fall Sports practices and Musical auditions will start today, Monday, August 18th.
