The Sixth Scoop
Nichols News, 30th Edition
Hello 6th Grade Families,
Thank you for your flexibility last week as we adjusted the date for our library field trip. It turned out to be a beautiful day for a neighborhood walk! I had the pleasure of walking with our students on Tuesday and truly enjoyed chatting with both students and staff along the way.
Did you know the library offers audiobooks? As an Audible fan myself, I was excited to learn that! Even better—our students had the library all to themselves during the visit, as it was closed to the public. A big thank you to Ms. Philippe, our school librarian, who thoughtfully planned the trip. We also celebrated Librarian Day on Friday and want to recognize the incredible work she does to support literacy at Nichols. She recently partnered with our ELA teachers to launch the Nichols Spring Book Challenge—encouraging students to engage with great books!
We also honored Paraprofessional Day last week. Our amazing paraprofessionals play a vital role in our school community. They support students during instruction, Fine Arts classes, and even lunch, ensuring every child feels confident, safe, and supported.
Looking ahead to next week:
-
Wednesday is a half day. Please make sure your child brings a charged iPad, binder, and writing utensils.
-
Please do not drop students off before 7:40 AM, as there is no adult supervision before that time.
-
On Friday, students will have the opportunity to check out books from the Nichols library throughout the day. If your child hasn’t signed up for the Spring Book Challenge yet, now’s a great time to jump in! We have hundreds of wonderful titles to choose from.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership. Wishing you a fantastic week ahead!
Warm regards,
Ms. Brunson

The Nichols PTA plays a vital role in making our school community strong, vibrant, and engaging. Thanks to their dedication, we’ve been able to host incredible events over the past few years, including:
- Back-to-School Night, a fun-filled celebration with jump houses, snacks, music, and a true sense of community.
- Family Fun Night, where families come together for an evening of activities and connection.
- The State of Nichols Address, providing important updates and insights about our school.
Beyond events, the PTA directly supports our students and teachers in meaningful ways. They provide grants that fund exciting learning opportunities and hands-on projects in our classrooms. They also go above and beyond to show appreciation for our teachers, ensuring they receive special gifts during Teacher Appreciation Week. This year, the PTA generously funded our math teachers' attendance at the NCTM Math Conference, allowing them to expand their expertise and bring back valuable knowledge for our students.
However, our current PTA leadership team members are primarily 7th and 8th grade parents—and with our 8th grade families moving on to ETHS next year, we need 6th grade parents to step up and get involved.
We need you to help keep our community strong! Your involvement ensures that Nichols continues to provide enriching experiences for students and essential support for teachers. It takes a village to educate and uplift the next generation.
If you're interested in joining the PTA leadership team and becoming an integral part of the Nichols Pride, please email nicholsmiddlepta@gmailo.com. Your time and commitment will make a lasting impact!
Thank you for being part of our Nichols community!

Black SonRise - Excerpt from Week 1 Recap
We reintroduced the Little Leaders book series and the characteristics of some of the Black men who have stood tall throughout history. We also discussed the importance of leaning on each other for support, encouragement, and inspiration.
To this end, Riser alums who have matriculated to high school are coming back to pour into our current group.
We heard from the first of the alums, Isaiah Burns, Nichols Middle School c/o 2024 and current ETHS Honor Roll student. Isaiah spoke to us about his journey and encouraged the young Risers to stay focused on the pursuit of excellence. He also offered himself as a resource to provide guidance and advice.
