Principal's Corner - October 2, 2026

Happy Friday, Squire Families!

Fall is here, and there is so much to look forward to at LTE! We have some exciting opportunities for families to get involved, so be sure to check out the flyers and updates throughout this week's newsletter. We love seeing our Squire families come together to make our school community so special!

Monday is World Teachers' Day, and I can't think of a better reason to shower our incredible teachers with a little extra love! I'd love to challenge EVERY family to take a moment to send a note of appreciation to their child's teacher. Our CAVS Kudos digital form makes it quick and easy to share a few kind words that can make a BIG difference. You'll find the link below, so let's fill our teachers' buckets with gratitude!

As we round out our first quarter, remember that teamwork makes the dream work! Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled for next Friday, October 9. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate your child's growth and work together to set them up for continued success. Teachers are coordinating appointments directly with families, so please connect with your child's teacher for scheduling details.

And finally, fall fun is just getting started! Our Fall Festival is right around the corner, along with plenty of other opportunities to connect, volunteer and celebrate together. Be sure to visit the PTA section of this newsletter to find out how you can get involved in all the fun!

Thank you for being such an important part of our LTE family. We appreciate your partnership and all you do to make our school a wonderful place to learn and grow. LTE is the place to be!

With appreciation,
Amanda Prehn

School Lockdown Drill 10/8 School Lockdown Drill 10/8

A critical component of school safety is the classroom response to an incident on campus. The Standard Response Protocol, or SRP, is a proven method of creating shared language and actions among students, staff, and first responders during a school emergency. Since its adoption in August 2019, students across our district have received an introduction and overview of the SRP including classroom practices and drills.

On Thursday, October 8th, representatives of the Lake Travis ISD Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies will take part in a lockdown drill at our school. During this time, parents, students and visitors to our school may see police officers and safety vehicles on our campus. The drill is scheduled to occur in the morning and should take no more than 15 minutes to complete. Our teachers and students have been advised of the drill and are prepared to participate.

Additionally, the Texas School Safety Center encourages parents to speak with their children about the importance of safety drills. Parents may find the following tips helpful:

  • Explain the purpose of drills to your child.

  • Explain to your child, using age and developmentally appropriate language, how to respond when law enforcement arrives on campus; reassure your child that measures have been taken to maintain their safety.

  • Talk with your child before and after the initial drill to identify any special concerns or fears your child may have.

Talking with your child about what to expect helps your child to understand that law enforcement is there to keep them safe.

Thank you for your continued trust and support. Together, we will ensure that our schools remain a safe and nurturing environment for all students and staff.

October Word of the Month: Courage!

Courage is feeling scared or nervous about something, but doing it anyway because it’s important to do the right thing. It takes courage to be an upstander. An upstander is someone who takes action to help someone who is being hurt, bullied, or treated unfairly, instead of staying a silent bystander.

Discussion questions for home:

Describe a time you were brave and scared at the same time?

What are some small, quiet ways to show kindness to someone who seems hurt or left out?

What can you do if you see someone being treated unfairly?

Unity Day October, 21 wear and share the color orange!

Unity day is a special day when people across the country wear orange to show they stand together for kindness, acceptance and inclusion. The bright vibrant color reminds us that everyone deserves to feel safe, valued and respected. Together we can strengthen our school community by having courage to be an upstander and prevent bullying!

DISCOVERY/GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM REFERRAL - DEADLINE IS OCTOBER 10/15 DISCOVERY/GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM REFERRAL - DEADLINE IS OCTOBER 10/15

Attention LTISD Parents and Guardians,

Discovery, otherwise known as Gifted and Talented, is the enrichment program provided for students who have been identified as intellectually gifted and talented. All students are eligible to be selected for the Discovery program at each campus. In order to be identified as gifted and talented, each student must undergo a screening and selection process. The Discovery Program is now accepting parent referrals for GT Screening via Google form.

Elementary Form - For Grades 1, 3, 4, 5

  • Second Graders will not need a referral. The entire grade level will be screened in October. More information to come.

  • Kindergarten students can be referred for GT testing beginning in January 2027. More details will be shared regarding this process at the end of the first semester.

Transfer students, who were already identified as GT coming from their previous district, should submit the Google form as soon as possible, as the transfer student screening will be set within 30 days of the first day of school. Parents should send proof of their child's selection/participation in the previous GT program directly to the campus GT coordinator. (This applies to families that haven’t already been in touch with the GT coordinator.)

Parents can submit referrals for screening by October 15, 2026. Testing will occur during the 2nd 9 weeks of instruction. If the referral and permission forms are not submitted by the deadline, the next opportunity for the student to be screened will be the following academic year. Spring screening is reserved for students moving in new to the district after the fall testing window is closed and for kindergarten students.

The forms, program information and campus coordinator names can be found on the district Gifted and Talented page.

Once the request is submitted through the Google form, the campus GT coordinator will contact parents via email after October 15th to share pertinent information.

You are also welcome to contact your campus GT coordinator at any time with questions.

2nd Grade GT Testing 2nd Grade GT Testing

All 2nd grade students will participate in a brief CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) screener between October 5–16. The CogAT looks at how students think and solve problems rather than what they have learned in class.

The screener includes one section from each of the three CogAT areas: Verbal, Quantitative, and Nonverbal reasoning. Each subtest begins with practice questions so students can become familiar with the format and reasoning tasks before they begin.

No reading is required. Students respond to pictorial questions and answer choices by selecting the circle under the picture that best answers the question. The screener is not timed, and each of the three subtests typically takes about 10–15 minutes to complete.

Results are used to help identify students who may benefit from additional GT/Discovery assessment. This is the first step to determine eligibility for the LTISD Discovery program.

Families who do not want their child to participate may complete the Opt Out form by Friday, October 2, 2026 at 3 pm.

If your child is in special education, direct assessment questions to their case manager.

If you have general questions, please contact your campus Discovery/GT Coordinator.
