Hello Westwood Schools families,

This week is a short week for students, there is no school on Thursday and Friday. Our staff is preparing for conferences and engaging in professional learning. We’ll be focusing on literacy and creating individualized plans based on fall data, what we have learned from students, and upcoming unit planning. Based on this work over the next few days:

  • You may see individual schedule shifts for students who need support in reading and math. We will be adjusting schedules in the upcoming weeks. Your child’s teacher or counselor will reach out to you with any changes that impact your child.
  • In the classroom, students will experience word study of root words, prefixes, suffixes, and words that are used across content areas to help students comprehend and analyze the texts they are reading. The reading we ask kids to do in grades 5-8 becomes more complex. We will focus literacy instruction on supporting students in reading multisyllabic words and developing vocabulary.

Conferences are next week on Tuesday evening, 4-7 p.m. and Wednesday, 8-11 a.m. and 12-3 p.m. Grades 5 and 6 please sign up for a conference time with your child’s homeroom teacher. Conferences from grades 7-8 are not scheduled; Feel welcome to drop in any time.

We’ll see students back in school next Monday and Tuesday, and then it’s fall break and no school for students next Wednesday, October 14 through Friday, October 16. There won’t be a school newsletter next Wednesday. We’ll look forward to seeing you for conferences.

Enjoy the long weekend,

Journey Student Conferences

Families of Journey students, please note that during Family Communication & Connection Days on Tuesday, October 13 and Wednesday, October 14, all Journey teachers will hold conferences in room S137. Plan to report to room S137 when arriving for your student’s conference.

5th Grade Vision & Hearing Screenings

Westwood will be conducting vision and hearing screenings for 5th grade students on October 22 and 23. Families, please make sure your student brings their glasses or other vision aids to school if they normally use them.

E-Bikes, E-Scooters & E-Motos: Know the Rules

As e-bikes, e-scooters and e-motos become more popular with students, we want families to be aware of the rules for safely and legally operating these devices in Blaine.

The City of Blaine has regulations in place for electric-assisted bicycles and motorized scooters, including age requirements, helmet use, where devices may be ridden, speed limits and other safety requirements. The rules also differ depending on whether the device is considered an e-bike, e-scooter or e-moto.

Families are encouraged to review the E-Bike, E-Scooter and E-Moto Comparison Guide together with their student. One important reminder for all riders: operators are expected to follow traffic laws, yield appropriately, signal turns and maintain control of their device.

Please take a few minutes to review the e-bike, e-scooter and e-motos guide and help keep our students safe! The City of Blaine ordinance regulating electric-assisted bicycles and motorized foot scooters has been in effect since June 4, 2026.

Exploring the Layers of the Earth

6th grade science students got hands-on with their learning today! Students in Ms. Kelly’s and Ms. Troska’s classes are learning about the layers of the Earth and how Earth’s surface changes over time. During lab, students used crackers, frosting and fruit roll-ups to simulate different types of movement on Earth’s surface. This tasty experiment gave students a fun, hands-on way to visualize how the Earth moves and changes!

PTO Staff Appreciation: Conference Meals

Conference meals for our Westwood staff are just around the corner! Each year, the PTO helps make conference days a little easier by providing food that staff can quickly grab after school before conferences begin or enjoy during a break.

Ways to help

  • Families can donate requested food items or drop off cash/check donations at the Westwood front office by noon on Monday, October 12. Electronic donations can also be made through the PTO using Zeffy.
  • Volunteers are also needed on Tuesday, October 13 to help with setup from 1:45–2:45 p.m. and cleanup from 6:45–7:30 p.m. If you're available to lend a hand, please sign up to volunteer for conference meals.

Thank you in advance for helping the PTO brighten the day and show our appreciation for our amazing Westwood staff!

Powering Schools with the Sun

A year ago, Centerview Elementary and Westwood Intermediate and Middle School began generating electricity from the sun. State and federal grants covered 90 percent of the cost, and one year later, the results are solar-iously encouraging.

Centerview and Westwood are not the only district schools benefiting from solar energy. Read more about how we're Powering Schools with the Sun.

Winter Market (and Thrift Shop)

Community Education will be hosting the Winter Market for our students/families again on Saturday, December 5. This is an opportunity for students to shop for inexpensive items to give as gifts to loved ones for upcoming holidays and gift-giving events. There are two ways you can participate and help make this a great event:

  • Donate Panther gear for the Thrift Shop: Donate your gently used Panther gear with current SLP branding and get a coupon to use in the Panther Store for a future purchase. Gear will be re-sold at thrifty prices to students, staff, and families at the Winter Market. Plan to drop items at the DSC to get your coupon; email your questions to PantherStore@district16.org.
  • Donate gift items for the Winter Market Gift Shop: Donate gently used, almost new, or new items to the Winter Market. Bring items to the District Services Center to the attention of Community Education. Items appropriate for the Gift Shop include: small household items, household decor, puzzles, board games, jewelry, figurines, décor, kitchen gadgets, children’s books, cookbooks, etc. Think about items a child would be excited to pick out for an adult in their life, and what an adult might be happy to receive and use in their daily life. We are especially looking for items that could be gifted to men. Questions, please contact us at SLPComEd@district16.org.
