Science Fair
We are so proud of all the students who participated in yesterday’s Science Fair! Students showcased creative projects across a variety of scientific areas. Their curiosity and excitement about what they learned was on full display. Congratulations to all participants!
Thank you to Mrs. Moses for leading such a wonderful event and creating such a meaningful learning experience for our students!
We also appreciate the many parents and grandparents who attended the event to celebrate our young scientists. We are grateful to all the families who encouraged and supported this fun, optional learning opportunity.
5th Grade Graduation
To our families with graduating 5th graders, please mark your calendars for Monday, June 1st at 1:30 p.m. for our 5th Grade Graduation Ceremony. All 5th grade families are invited to attend the event. Please watch for additional details in the coming weeks.
Middle School Engagement Nights
5th Grade Families,
Welcome to Middle School! In the coming weeks, there will be many opportunities for you and your child to learn more about the middle school experience. Depending on your child’s middle school assignment, please plan to attend one of the following Middle School Family Engagement nights:
- Boeckman Middle School – Monday, May 11 at 5:30-7 PM
- Dodge Middle School - Thursday, April 30 at 5-7 PM
On this evening, staff will discuss the transition to 6th grade and families will have an opportunity to see the building. Administrators and counselors will be available for questions as well. Please do not hesitate to be in contact if we can support the transition to middle school in any way.
We look forward to beginning our partnership for the next several years!

Wit and Wisdom Information
What is a Deep Dive?
Everyday, students participate in a “Deep Dive” in their reading instruction. This is a targeted, 15-minute mini-lesson that takes a closer look at the English language. Deep Dives zoom in on specific skills your child needs to be a successful reader and writer.
Think of it as the "skill-building lab" where students practice the technical side of English using the very same books they are reading in class.
Deep Dives help to ensure that grammar and vocabulary aren't taught in isolation. Instead of a random worksheet, students learn how a specific word or comma actually changes the meaning of the book they are currently studying.
Vocabulary: Students don't just memorize definitions; they explore how words are built (prefixes/suffixes) and how to use them in context.
Conventions & Grammar: They learn rules—like where to put a period or how to use adjectives—by looking at how professional authors do it in their favorite classroom texts.
Access: By mastering these smaller parts of language, students feel more confident when they tackle the "bigger," more complex reading assignments.
How can you support this at home?
You don't need to be a grammar expert to help! You can reinforce these "dives" by:
Asking about "New Words": Instead of asking "What did you do in school today?", try asking, "Did you learn any interesting new words today?"
Notice the Details: When reading together at night, point out an interesting word or a long sentence and ask, "Why do you think the author chose to say it that way?"
Teacher Tip: If your child says they had a "Deep Dive" today, it means they were acting like a "language detective"—looking closely at the small clues that help us understand the big ideas in a book.

Attendance Tip!
Getting to school on time is just as important as being at school. Research shows that continued tardiness leads to poor attendance. Many of the most important parts of a student's day happen within the first 15 minutes. This is often when they have a time to socialize with their peers, orient themselves for the day, take care of necessary business, and connect with their teacher before the day starts. Never underestimate the power of the first 15 minutes of school!
End of Day Routine
Please make sure your child's teacher has an accurate, up-to-date plan for your child's dismissal at the end of the day.
When changes are needed, please communicate those changes with your child's teacher prior to the start of the school day. We cannot always guarantee teachers will see emails during the work day (as it depends on the activities they have planned with the students).
For EMERGENCY CHANGES, please communicate with the teacher and call the front office no later than 2pm. Changes to end of day routines are difficult for students and teachers. If at all possible please change YOUR routine instead of your students routine.
