Tree Story Part I

By Mr. Sears

Did you ever notice the small tree near the south east corner of the school? It might seem unremarkable but it is anything but. Take a closer look and you will see that the current tree is in the place of a tree that has been cut down. Likely cut down several times.

Cutting the tree down in the first place likely was the result of a practical decision to make this corner of the property easier to access and cut the grass. It was cut right down to the ground and this would seem the end of any future for this tree as it had lost connection to any of its leaves which act to supply the tree with energy.

I recall seeing the first sprouts of the new tree coming from the small bit of stump. Each year the tree would add to this progress until it has reached its current proud status.

Moral of the Story: Even when you get cut down to the ground you can rise to be proud and tall again.

Mosaic 2026

By Maximus Ly

On April 9th, Cohasset celebrated a mix of diverse cultures through the annual Mosaic Night. On this night, there were various nations that displayed what their culture is all about. Everything from activities to food was showcased to the audience. Additionally, there were entrepreneurs from CMS in the senior cafe that were running shops in order to test their products on the market. The design of the gymnasium was spectacular as there were flags of most countries and stands for all countries represented on that night. One specific part of the night that stood out were the performances in the middle of the floor that featured children dancing and doing many activities that were connected to a culture or country. Overall, the Mosaic Night in the Cohasset High School gym was a great cultural experience.

By Francesca Miele and Nelle Brophy

On May 22nd 2026, our very own Cohasset High Seniors had their prom. Seniors raced home from the pep rally hosted during school hours to go get ready, and get ready they did. Everyone looked their absolute best as they walked down the red carpet. Some favorite dresses of ours were from Mary Cate Donahue, Caitlyn Simms, and Pauline Naeveke. While there were multitudes of stunning dresses, those three caught our eyes. The seniors loved Ryan’s arcade post prom and reported dancing throughout the night. Overall the 2026 Cohasset High School Prom was a booming success!

Sophomores Visit Aquarium

By Taylor Sasso

The sophomore class took a thrilling field trip to the New England Aquarium in Boston. Students were able to spend the day exploring marine life, learning about oceans ecosystems, and enjoying time together outside of the classroom. The most popular spot in the aquarium was the giant ocean tank, where students were able to see sea turtles, sharks, stingrays and fish swimming. Many of the students also enjoyed the penguin exhibit, watching the penguins dive and interact with each other.

This trip was not only fun, but educational too. Students were able to learn about how pollution affects marine animals and habitats and the importance of ocean conversations. All students were encouraged to take what they learned at the aquarium and connect it to something they learned in science classes this year. In addition to the exhibits, the sophomore class was able to take a boat into Boston to get to the aquarium. Overall, the Boston Aquarium trip was a massive success and a very enjoyable experience for everyone who attended.

Cohasset Minds Matter

By Quinn Kearney

On May 22, 2026, Cohasset High School once again celebrated Cohasset Minds Matter Day, a mental-health focused day put on by the Safe Harbor Cohasset Youth Ambassadors Coalition. Safe Harbor is a youth-led organization that targets issues such as substance abuse and mental health, and for the past few years they have organized this event. Giving a much needed break from the stresses of everyday classes, “CMM” is an outside event where students can socialize with each other, play games, or visit the various booths set up to learn more about mental health and resources available to students if they are struggling. Among the booths and stations were yoga, a Safe Harbor table, arts and crafts, and a number of resource tables. Additionally, an ice cream truck offered relief from the heat and a tasty treat for students! After visiting and interacting with each booth, students had the opportunity to win a free sweatshirt or t-shirt, and after completing a mental health survey, students were also entered into a raffle for the chance to win a gift card to local restaurant Salty Days.

Overall, CMM 2026 was a huge success thanks to Safe Harbor, and students at CHS cannot wait for it next year!

Sandy Beach - Opening Soon!

By Charlotte Reilly

As summer approaches in Cohasset, Sandy Beach is preparing to open for the season on June 6. In the week leading up to opening day, employed local high school and college students help get the beach ready for its summer visitors. During the final weekend of May, student employees begin cleaning and organizing the beach facilities. Workers clean the bathhouse, prepare the grounds and help place wooden pathways across the sand. Lifeguard chairs are also set up before the season officially begins. Students additionally help prepare the snack bar for its annual inspection before opening day.

Throughout the summer, Sandy Beach employs local students in a variety of roles. Some students work as lifeguards responsible for monitoring swimmers and maintaining the safety of the beach. Others work on maintenance crews, which helps keep the beach clean and organized each day. Additional staff members work as gate attendants to ensure only cars with beach permits enter the parking area. Students also work at the snack bar serving food and drinks to visitors throughout the day. The snack bar is stocked with local and fresh food, supporting small businesses in the near area as well.

For many in Cohasset, the opening of the beach is an exciting day that they look forward to all year, especially with cold winters like this past year!

Tree Story Part II

By Russ Sears

The home I grew up in was surrounded by a dairy farm. The farmer’s family had owned our home but sold it to my ancestors many years prior. Beyond our back yard were the pastures that the cows and horses would graze. On one slope the cows and horses had worn a path from the barn to the gate. Within that path was a very small tree of unidentifiable species. It was not much more that 4 feet tall and only about as big around a your thumb. Every time a cow or horse used this path the rubbed up against the tree which stunted its growth.

Over the years the dairy farm became less and less busy and the traffic on that path continued to decrease. The tree began to grow more productively.

Finally the dairy farm shut down and little attention was paid to this part of the property. Eventually the farm deeded this property to my family so we began to take care of this property; mowing the lawn and removing weeds and brush. By this time the tree that was in the cow/horse path was identifiable as a crab apple tree. The cow path filled in with grass. The soil was exceptionally fertile from the cow traffic. In a few years this tree would be the most beautiful in the yard.

Moral of the Story: Being flexible will save your life and allow you to grow in the future. Get by today and you can live another day.
