Dear Families,

As we approach our upcoming family conferences, I want to emphasize how much we value your partnership in your child’s educational journey. These meetings are more than just progress updates; they are a vital opportunity for us to align as a team to support your child’s academic and social growth.

During your session, teachers will share insights into your child’s unique strengths, review recent work samples, and discuss grade-level expectations. We also want to learn from you—as the expert on your child, your perspective on their interests and home learning environment is invaluable to us.

To make our limited time most productive, please:

  • Discuss school with your child beforehand to bring their voice to the conversation.
  • Prepare specific questions about their progress or how to support learning at home.
  • Arrive promptly to ensure every family receives their full scheduled time.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Warmly,

Amy Johnston

What is Parenting with Love and Logic?

"I don't understand it. The techniques my parents used so effectively just don't seem to work with kids today." Does this statement sound familiar to you? Bullying

Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior that involves a real or perceived power imbalance and is repeated (or has the potential to be repeated) over time. It is intentional behavior meant to cause harm, fear, or distress to a target.

Core Elements of Bullying

To be classified as bullying, a behavior typically includes these three factors:

  • Imbalance of Power: People who bully use their power—such as physical strength, access to embarrassing information, or popularity—to control or harm others.
  • Repetition: Bullying behaviors happen more than once or are likely to happen again; they are not isolated incidents.
  • Intent to Harm: The behavior is deliberate and designed to hurt someone physically, socially, or emotionally.

Common Types of Bullying
  • Verbal Bullying: Saying or writing mean things, such as name-calling, insults, teasing, and threatening harm.
  • Social (Relational) Bullying: Hurting someone's reputation or relationships by spreading rumors, leaving them out on purpose, or embarrassing them in public.
  • Physical Bullying: Hurting a person’s body or possessions through hitting, kicking, tripping, or breaking their things.
  • Cyberbullying: Bullying that takes place over digital devices like cell phones or computers via social media, text, or apps.

What Bullying is NOT

It is important to distinguish bullying from other types of behavior:

  • Conflict: Disagreements between people of equal power that are usually isolated incidents.
  • Rude Behavior: Unintentionally saying or doing something that hurts feelings.
  • Mean Behavior: Aiming to hurt someone on purpose, but only doing it as a one-off act.

Steps to Report Bullying at School

  • Empower: Encourage your child to report their concern to their teacher.
  • Follow up: Reach out to your child's teacher through email, phone or by requesting an in person meeting to ensure the adult is fully aware of the concern. If issues continue, contact building principal for support.
  • Share details: Information such as students involved, location, actions & statements are very helpful to share with staff as they investigate a bullying concern.
