The Mustang Minute
Shultz Elementary Parent Newsletter - February 2022
Message from the Principal
Greetings Mustang families!
As we celebrate the beginning of 2022, we are excited to share additional opportunities for parents to connect to our school culture and be more involved in their child's daily school experience.
In the coming weeks and months, we will be providing more opportunities for parents to volunteer at school. It is our goal to find ways for all parents interested in volunteering to serve our PTA, our school, and their child's classroom in a way that works with their schedule and availability. We invite parents to complete our volunteer form at this link.
The information you provide on this form will be shared with your child's classroom teacher, our PTA, the office team, and other staff who utilize volunteers throughout the year. As volunteer opportunities come available during the school year, we will reach out to you. Parents should also feel welcome to contact teachers and the PTA directly to see how they can help.
We are also pleased to share that parents will be welcome to eat lunch at school with their children beginning Monday, February 7th. Parents should arrive a few minutes before their child's lunchtime and sign in at our front office with a valid ID. While not required, we recommend that our guests wear a mask in the school building when not seated on the stage with their children.
After signing in, parents can wait in our common area until their child's class arrives to the cafeteria. Here are our grade level lunch times:
- Kindergarten 10:10-10:40
- 1st Grade 10:45-11:15
- 5th Grade 11:20-11:50
- 2nd Grade 11:55-12:25
- 3rd Grade 12:30-1:00
- 4th Grade 1:05-1:35
We have set aside space for parents to eat with their children on the stage in our cafeteria. At this time, parents will eat lunch only with their personal children and not invite other students to join them. Parents are welcome to bring their younger children with them, but please keep them seated with you on the stage and supervise them closely.
Once lunch is finished, parents will say goodbye to their children in the commons and sign out through the front office before leaving. We are so pleased to have our families in our new building for lunch! Your involvement and support are very important to us, and we look forward to sharing additional opportunities soon for you to connect with our staff and students during the school day.
We are thrilled that the science fair is returning to our school this year! All of our K-5 classes completed a classroom science fair project together in January, and now students have the opportunity to complete individual science fair projects. All 5th grade students will complete a project, and this is optional for all PK-4th grade students.
Completed student science fair projects are due Friday, March 4th and will be judged March 7th and 8th. A special science fair awards night is scheduled at the school for the evening of Tuesday, March 8th at 6:00 pm. We will hold a school-wide walk-through of projects on Wednesday, March 9th, and projects should be picked up at 3:00 pm that afternoon.
Please watch this video from Mrs. Yarbrough for more information about our science fair, also available in Spanish from Mrs. Rana. More information about our PTA science fair can be found at this link, including science fair packets in both English and Spanish with entry forms and a parental release form for human subjects under 18 years of age. Finally, students and parents will find this presentation helpful as they are planning their successful science fair projects.
Last month, the Texas Education Agency published 20-21 School Report Cards, also known as Texas Academic Performance Reports (TAPR). Federal Report Cards for 20-21have also been made available. These reports can be found on the TEA website using the following links. When searching by campus, make sure to search for "Wilson," as that was our school name last year before it was changed to Shultz Elementary. If you have difficulty finding these reports, or if you have questions, please feel welcome to contact me for assistance.
2020-2021 School Report Cards (TAPR)
2020-2021 Federal Report Cards
Reviewing these reports, there is a great deal to celebrate in our school's performance last year!
- On the 2021 STAAR assessments, in all categories school's results were higher than both the district and state averages. This is the case in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade, at all performance levels (approaches, meets, and masters) in all content areas (math, reading, writing, and science).
- The passing rate for children with disabilities and English language learners at our school significantly outperformed the state and district averages in all grade levels and content assessments.
- In the school progress domain, which measures student academic growth from one year to the year, our campus results exceeded state averages in 4th grade reading and 4th grade math.
- In the last reported data prior to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, our school attendance rate exceeded the state and district rates.
We want to recognize the dedication and tireless efforts of our teachers, staff, students, and families in promoting high levels of learning at our school despite the unique challenges we've faced in the past two years. Shultz Elementary is a community like no other, and we appreciate all the ways you have continued to support the great teaching and learning taking place in our school each day!
With Mustang pride,
Matt Preston

Morning Car Drop-Off Options for Families
This is a reminder that parents dropping students off by car now have two options for car drop-off in the morning. Students arriving by car may be dropped off either in the north driveway off of Hanover Dr. or the south driveway off Emerson Ln. Children in all grade levels may be dropped off at either location, and all students will enter through the front entrance of the school. Staff and safety patrol are present at both locations to welcome and assist your children as they get out of your vehicle.
We hope this second drop-off option is more convenient for our families. We recommend that more families consider using the Emerson drop-off location in the morning, as the Hanover driveway is typically far more crowded. Thank you for driving slowly and courteously and for having your children ready to exit the vehicle quickly. Once your child exits your vehicle, please wait patiently until the car line moves forward. Please do not pull out of the line around other vehicles, as this is not part of our established procedures and creates a potentially unsafe situation.
Students can be dropped off as early as 7:15 am, and car drop-off ends promptly at 7:40 am when the tardy bell rings. After 7:40, parents must park and walk their children to the office to be signed in as tardy.
