📚 TEA Releases 2022-23 Accountability Ratings
In the Spring 2023, after students took STAAR tests, the Texas Education Agency changed the rules by drastically raising accountability standards—like increasing the college, career, military readiness standard from 60% to 88% for an "A" rating. Anna ISD joined forces with over 120 Texas school districts to challenge the Texas Education Agency in court, delaying the release of school performance ratings for two years. Although the districts initially won in court, putting the ratings on hold, an appeals court eventually ruled in the TEA's favor. The lawsuit highlighted widespread concerns among educators that these abrupt changes created an evaluation system that didn't accurately reflect student achievement or school performance.
With these changes, Anna ISD received a C district rating for 2022-2023.

Laurie Smith- SCMS
This year, Slayter Creek Middle School launched its very first Newcomer ESL class—and at the heart of it is Laurie Smith, a passionate and dedicated educator who’s making a powerful difference in the lives of her students.
As the SCMS ESL teacher, Mrs. Smith is leading the way in supporting English learners new to the country and just beginning their language journey. She uses the Read 180 program to build English proficiency, but her approach goes far beyond the curriculum. With journal writing, technology, and interactive games woven into her lessons, she creates dynamic learning experiences that meet students where they are—and make learning English fun.
More importantly, Mrs. Smith has created a classroom environment that is warm, welcoming, and safe—a place where students feel comfortable enough to take risks, make mistakes, and grow. Her focus on lowering students’ affective filters means they’re more willing to speak up, try new things, and connect with their peers.
Her students know she believes in them, supports them, and truly cares. Mrs. Smith is more than a teacher—she’s a champion, cheerleader, and guide for her students during a big transition. We’re so lucky to have her at SCMS!

MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH!
If you are like most adults, you may not have grown up talking openly about your mental health with your parents, and it may still feel like an uncomfortable subject for that very reason. A national survey from Nationwide Children’s Hospital found that while the vast majority of parents (93%) say that talking to their children about mental health is essential, as many as 59% of parents admit to needing help to start the conversation.
If this describes you, Mental Health America has you covered with journal prompts that can turn into discussion prompts. Pick four and turn them into a weekly after-dinner or bedtime habit, and by the end of the month, you will feel more comfortable, and your child will know they are safe to talk with you when it matters!
