Digital Safety Workshop Replay and Resources Digital Safety Workshop Replay and Resources

Earlier this month, Monomoy students in Grades 3-7 had the opportunity to learn about digital safety through interactive presentations by Richard Guerry of the Institute for Responsible Online and Cellphone Communication, and families and community members also enjoyed an evening Parent University session. Topics included how to be smart and safe when gaming, using social media, and communicating online, and how to be good digital citizens. Many thanks to Children's Cove for bringing this excellent speaker to our schools.

If you missed the event, or want to reinforce this important information, you can find a video replay and other resources on a dedicated MRSD website through IROC.

Note: It is highly recommended the videos provided for Students & Parents are previewed before showing them to children under 11.

A message from the MRHS Nurse Team: A message from the MRHS Nurse Team:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Our school is currently experiencing an increase in influenza (flu) cases and flu-like illnesses. To protect our students and staff, we need your partnership in preventing further spread.

When to Keep Your Child Home:

  • Fever: Temperature of 100.4°F (37.8°C) or higher.

  • Vomiting or Diarrhea: Must be symptom-free for 24 hours.

  • Flu Symptoms: Sudden fever, chills, body aches, fatigue, sore throat, or a hacking cough.

Do NOT Send Your Child to School If:

  • You've given fever-reducing medicine (Tylenol/Motrin) to mask symptoms; they are still contagious.

  • They are too unwell to participate in class.

Return to School Guidelines:

  • Students must be fever-free for a full 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication.

  • Symptoms should be significantly improving.

Prevention is Key:

  • Handwashing: Wash hands frequently with soap and water.

  • Cough Etiquette: Cover coughs/sneezes with an elbow or tissue.

  • Stay Home: The best way to prevent the spread of germs.

  • Flu Vaccine: Highly recommended for protection.

Congrats to all students for completing their midterms! Congrats to all students for completing their midterms!

Semester 2 begins on Monday. It will be a Day 5 in the schedule.

Shark Shoutout: A huge success at the Robotics Tournament! Shark Shoutout: A huge success at the Robotics Tournament!

We want to send a massive Shark Shoutout to the incredible team that made our recent Robotics Tournament a triumph. Events like this rely on community support, and we are lucky to have the best.

First, thank you to Matt Barnes, Jazmyn St. John, and Katie Carey for stepping up to facilitate the event. Your willingness to jump in was crucial in making sure the day ran smoothly from start to finish. A sincere thank you also goes to Nancy Gifford for her dedication in preparing the Middle School Robotics team and for her unwavering overall support of the program.

On the hospitality front, huge appreciation goes to Sarah Peters, Betsy Casey, and Ryan Millen for setting up and running the class-sponsored concession stand. The food was fantastic—the waffles were a massive hit, and everyone raved about the baked goods!

We also want to extend a big thank you to Ryanna Caivano and her custodial team. They did a fantastic job helping us plan, set up, and clean up the cafeteria. The attendees were very impressed with the venue and how well-supported the event felt thanks to their hard work.

We owe a special, "above and beyond" shoutout to Mackenzie Yarletts and Cristina Loureiro. They dedicated several days of work to configuring the Tournament Manager software, ensuring the technical side of the competition was flawless.

Finally, we want to relay a special sentiment shared by visiting students from Dennis-Yarmouth and Mashpee High Schools. They were incredibly impressed by the presence and engagement of our administration—Jen Police, Abigail Dudley, and Dr. Millen. The visiting students noted how rare and special it is to see school leaders taking such a genuine interest in a Robotics event. It serves as a great reminder that our students are truly fortunate to have an administration that cares so deeply.

Go Sharks!

My favorite thing about my art internship at Monomoy High School is that I learn numerous helpful skills throughout each class. I plan to study Art in college. My mentor offers me advice while demonstrating how an art class should be run. I have had opportunities to help students and organize the art room. My new project is to prep the sets for the school play. I am excited and grateful to be a part of this experience and learn new things from my mentor.

What I like most about my internship with the Chatham Fire Department is how hands-on and educational the experience has been. Over the past several months, I have had the opportunity to participate in various tasks, including assisting with equipment checks, learning basic firefighting techniques, and observing emergency medical responses. I have also had the opportunity to ride along on calls and see firsthand how firefighters work together under pressure. It has been an incredible internship, and each day I gain new knowledge and skills while learning more about serving the community.

What I love most about my internship at Cape Media Center is how much I am learning! I have learned about specific camera equipment, how to format interviews, and how to edit my videos. At the Media Center, they provide me with all of the resources I need to shoot videos regarding my personal interests, as well as creative assignments, and then edit them into something I can be proud to share with the public. I am very excited to continue improving my skills and bringing more ideas to life with the Cape Media Center throughout the rest of the year.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my internship at Cape & Coast Bank. What I like most is being able to see how a local bank operates on a day-to-day basis and how important it is to the community. I have been learning about customer service, banking procedures, and how various departments collaborate to support clients. Everyone has been very welcoming and willing to answer questions, which has made it a great learning experience. This internship has helped me develop professional skills and gain a deeper understanding of the role banks play in supporting individuals and businesses.

I am so grateful to be an intern at the Veterinary Associates of Cape Cod. It is only halfway through the year, and I have already learned so much about veterinary medicine and life skills in general. Every single person there is committed to ensuring I have the best experience possible, whether it is in ultrasound, surgery, or patient check-ins. When I am not observing a patient alongside a technician, I am performing hands-on tasks such as drawing up vaccines, cleaning kennels, or assisting with restraints. I am not just learning about veterinary medicine; I am also discovering how to communicate effectively with people going through tough situations and how to cope with making difficult decisions. I look forward to continuing to learn and apply the skills I have acquired, as I pursue my career as a veterinarian.

I have really been enjoying my internship in the SAIL program at Monomoy Regional High School! I have an amazing mentor, and I am comfortable asking questions whenever I am unsure about things. I have been working with students one-on-one, as well as in a class, learning how to adapt to their needs. I have also been compiling monthly newsletters for them to distribute, tracking their activities, and following their curriculum. I am learning so much about special education and how to adapt to situations as needed. I have acquired many skills that I will carry with me into the future.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my internship at Details Inc. in Harwich Port, where I have gained valuable insights into running a successful interior design business. I have been able to do many tasks, including organization, ordering, and filing. I have taken before-and-after pictures to show my work and how I help maintain the space. This internship allows me to understand what my future could look like. I love being able to try new things and building new skills.

My internship at Brewster Fire Department has been a great experience for me so far. Being an intern at Brewster Fire has motivated me to pursue my EMT certification and become a firefighter upon graduation. Pictured above is a photo of me using the fire hose in a training exercise for car fires. Overall, my internship has taught me about how a fire department runs and what the job is really like.

What I like most about my internship in my high school’s post-graduate special education classroom is how meaningful and hands-on the experience is. Throughout my senior year, I have had the opportunity to work closely with students, assist with daily routines, and support individualized learning goals. I assist with classroom activities, reinforce life skills, and offer encouragement to students as they develop independence and confidence. Every day brings a new challenge and a new opportunity to learn, and this internship has strengthened my passion for special education. It is incredibly rewarding to be part of a classroom that fosters growth, patience, and inclusion, and I am grateful for the experience and the impact it has had on me.

What I like most about my internship at Harwich Community Center is how much experience I am gaining from my mentor. I have accomplished numerous tasks, such as creating flyers to advertise the rec center or special events happening around town, assisting and helping the elderly with various senior activities that allow them to interact, and so many other things. All my thanks go to my mentor, John Losey, who has been very helpful and kind to me. I am never uncomfortable asking him questions when I need assistance or sharing conversations with him when we work together. Overall, I am very happy with the internship opportunity I have been given, and I plan to continue working hard there to gain more experience for what lies ahead after high school.

I am enjoying my internship at Chatham Elementary School in a kindergarten class. Every day, I get to help the students with their work, play learning games, and support the teachers, which makes the experience very fun and rewarding. The students are always full of energy, and it feels good to know I am helping them learn and grow. This internship has helped me develop responsibility and patience, while also showing me the meaningful impact of working with young children.

I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to intern at Cape Cod Hospital on the Maternity unit. It has been a very eye-opening experience as I learn something new every day on the floor. I have had the chance to watch deliveries, newborn assessments, postpartum care, and many other clinical skills. One thing I love most about shadowing in labor and delivery is seeing how nurses not only provide the necessary medical care but also go above and beyond by offering immense emotional support during a very vulnerable time. Following various nurses on the floor and observing the tasks they complete has deepened my aspiration to work in this field.

My time interning with Mr. Nickerson has been engaging, insightful, and will prepare me for my future as a secondary art teacher. Over the past few months, I have learned through firsthand experience the preparation, skillfulness, and patience required to maintain a classroom in the art world. I have cleaned the classroom, answered any questions from students in need with insight on how to improve their work, recycled new clay, organized the glaze inventory and tiles, aided in loading both the greenware and bisqueware kiln, and further improved my craft. This internship has fueled my passion for ceramics and my hopes for a career in teaching.

Throughout my internship at Chatham Elementary, I have learned so much about the true work of teachers and how a school is kept running. At my internship, every day is a little different as I get to see all the classes and all the grade levels come through the library. I have always enjoyed being with children, but being able to connect with so many different students in such a short amount of time has been a new experience and a great privilege. I enjoy being able to watch the children get excited about reading, as this was something I know I loved when I was little. Overall, this internship has been extremely enjoyable and an eye-opening experience.

What I appreciate most about my internship with Ms. Richard is the opportunity to have hands-on tasks that further my music education. In the past few months, I have had the chance to sort and file music, which has given me a taste of what it would be like to be a music librarian. I have also had the opportunity to transpose music that we are actively working on. Completing the pieces in a short amount of time has helped me improve my time management skills. I now have a better understanding of how music theory and different keyed instruments relate. I am excited to have the opportunity to conduct a band class while Ms. Richard is absent! I am very grateful I have the resources and opportunity to be Ms. Richard’s intern.

I absolutely love my internship at Harwich Elementary School! It has been an amazing experience helping out in Mrs. Cloney’s first-grade classroom, and I have felt so involved. As someone who loves children, attending my internship on the days I am scheduled has brought me an abundance of happiness and joy. While in the classroom, I have completed a variety of different tasks, ranging from helping students with writing, reading, and aiding them in navigating challenging math problems, as well as keeping the classroom tidy. I have also loved having the opportunity to speak with other first-grade teachers during lunch break, asking them about their experiences in this field. Overall, this internship has opened my eyes to the sacrifices that teachers make every day in support of a student’s education, and I now admire the profession more than ever.

What I like most about my internship in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit at Cape Cod Hospital is being able to see both patient care and what happens behind the scenes. I have learned how nurses care for patients after surgery, including monitoring vitals, managing comfort, and making sure patients are safe as they wake up. I have also seen how much organization goes into the unit, such as transporting patients, moving equipment, stocking supplies, and keeping everything clean and ready. I was able to help with many aspects of the process, including stocking, cleaning, shadowing staff, and transporting patient belongings, which helped me become more familiar with different healthcare roles and navigate the hospital. This internship has shown me how much teamwork, responsibility, and attention to detail go into patient care, and it has made me even more interested in a healthcare career.

The thing I really enjoy about interning at Wheelhouse Bike Company is that it is a completely new experience for me. I get to learn how to customize, modify, and repair bikes. I have a wonderful mentor who has taught me everything I currently know about fixing bikes. I have learned a great deal already, and I have even fixed a couple of bikes myself based on what I have been taught. I really enjoy interning at Wheelhouse Bike, and I am excited to see what I will learn next.

It makes me happy to know that my assistance can not only improve a member of the community’s day, but also their physical health. I am excited to continue to put my knowledge to use and see what else I can accomplish in the upcoming months at CCNC.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my internship at LaTanzi, Spaulding & Landreth LLP! LaTanzi, Spaulding & Landreth is a law firm that offers a full range of legal services, but is particularly known for its expertise in estate planning. My task is to use Microsoft Excel to catalog original and duplicate documents from the vault. Since October 1, I have cataloged over 1700 documents! I have built a strong relationship with my mentor, Joan, as well as many of the attorneys and paralegals. Through my experience at LSL, I have become familiar with various estate planning documents, including trusts, powers of attorney, health care proxies, and other similar documents. This internship has given me a glimpse into what a future career as a lawyer may look like.

What I have liked most about my internship at Monomoy Regional High School with Mr. Cass is how great a mentor he is to me, helping me through all my questions and providing me with useful tips that will benefit me in my future. Having the freedom of the independent study really makes me learn to manage my time and stay on task, which is something I have not truly experienced yet. Every day is a new learning experience for me; figuring out the ins and outs of the computer and camera equipment is really going to help me take one foot forward, stepping into college. What I enjoy most about my internship at Outermost Harbor Marine is the hands-on experience I gain from working in the shop and assisting in the boatyard. As an avid boater, I have enjoyed learning more about how boats are maintained, repaired, and stored for the off-season. Every day is a little bit different, with new challenges that I enjoy. I have really enjoyed interning at East South-East LLC! My mentors are fantastic, and I feel more than comfortable asking questions and seeking help from the staff. I mainly work in the office to finalize maps of property lines, and I travel throughout Chatham residences to stake properties and points of interest. This internship has really helped me develop the ability to multitask and create a step-by-step plan for tackling assignments. I am now able to see in real-time all the ways teachers help shape their students, and I am even more appreciative of the education I have received so far. I have been to SWAT, school shooting, gun, and taser training, in which I was able to actually participate. My internship in Monomoy’s art classes has become such a fun part of my daily life. I intern in an Introduction to Sculpture and Advanced Ceramics class, where I get to see new, inspired young artists do something they love and help them fulfill their visions to the fullest. I have learned the ins and outs of running an art classroom, recycling clay, organizing efficiently, and cleaning up after classes. I have made new, unexpected friends and have had the opportunity to enjoy helping others by teaching them new things. I get to sit down with students who have never thought about building something new, just from an idea in their head. Marine Science students in Ms. Picariello's class welcomed scientists from the Mass Audubon/Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary this week to perform necropsies on Kemp's Ridley sea turtles. The sea turtles were recently stranded on Cape Cod beaches and did not survive. (For more information on why sea turtles strand on Cape Cod in the winter, this is a great article). Monomoy students assisted with two official necropsies and the data collected will be used by the Mass Audubon for their sea turtle research program, which is globally recognized.

Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay sea turtle staff are permitted by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) to work with sea turtles. All sea turtles in U.S. coastal waters are protected under the US Endangered Species Act.

Monomoy students are fortunate for the opportunity to collaborate on this project, and we thank Spring, Karen, Eamon, and Josiah from the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary for sharing their expertise with us. Also many thanks to the Friends of Chatham Waterways for funding this school project through a generous grant.

Wrinkled Heart Activity Wrinkled Heart Activity

After reading the moving book The Wrinkled Heart, our SAIL students and their Unified PE buddies teamed up for a powerful hands-on activity. Each pair created two different hearts: one representing hurtful words or actions that "wrinkle" the heart, and another filled with the kind words and moments that bring joy and make the heart feel good.

It was a beautiful way to demonstrate a vital lesson: while we can always apologize or try to make amends, the "wrinkles" from unkindness often leave a lasting mark. This activity served as a gentle, visual reminder of the permanent impact our words and actions have on others.

In 2022, The Cape Cod Foundation launched its first discretionary scholarship fund with a $34,000 bequest. Since then, with continual support from private foundations, individual donors, and businesses, The Cape Cod Foundation Scholarship has grown to provide multi-year support to students each year to help ensure they have the resources to complete their education. In 2025, five local students received a total of $35,000 in scholarship support from this fund.

Building on this success, and to address the demand for careers in science, technology, engineering, and math, The Cape Cod Foundation is proud to announce the launch of the STEM Scholarship for the 2026 season. This new fund will provide $10,000, multi-year awards to students pursuing STEM degrees, expanding opportunities for local talent in these high-impact fields.

Because of these initiatives, the Foundation's scholarship team was invited to speak on a panel about the power of collective giving at last fall's National Scholarship Providers Conference. This proven philanthropic model continues to maximize impact for students in communities across the country.

If you would like to learn more about or donate to either of these scholarships, please contact Mary Beth Burwood, Director of Education and Workforce Development at mburwood@capecodfoundation.org.
