What Has Been Happening in Mrs. Logan's (aka Ms. Kehs) classroom? What Has Been Happening in Mrs. Logan's (aka Ms. Kehs) classroom?

Mrs. Logan (Miss Kehs) teaches 7th grade math and is currently working with students to prepare for the PSSAs. Students have been answering open-ended questions relating to information they have learned earlier this school year as well as more recent topics in math. Outside of the PSSAs however, students have just finished a unit on solving problems involving geometry. They have learned about angle pairs, areas of different shapes and surfaces, and how angles of a triangle work together. The topic we are wrapping up right now is finding the volume of prisms. Although many students face challenges in math, Mrs. Logan has been dedicated to her student’s success by providing weekly help sessions at lunch for students to come ask questions and complete homework as needed. She has also been meeting with multiple students each day to discuss their progress in math and missing assignments.

Dress Code Reminder Dress Code Reminder

As the weather gets warmer, we’d like to remind families about our school dress code to ensure a comfortable and respectful learning environment for all students.

  • Shorts and skirts should be an appropriate length (mid-thigh or longer).
  • Tops should fully cover the midriff—no exposed stomachs.
  • Clothing should provide appropriate coverage for all body parts while at school.
  • Flip-flops are not permitted for safety reasons; students should wear secure, closed-toe footwear.

We appreciate your support in helping students come to school dressed appropriately and ready to learn each day.

All Electronic Devices Will Be Collected During PSSA Testing All Electronic Devices Will Be Collected During PSSA Testing

In an era of cell phones, smartphones and other electronic devices which can easily photograph and instantly share photographs, confidential and secure test materials can be easily compromised. Not only is it expensive to replace a compromised test item, the material contained in the PSSA and Keystone Exams is copyrighted property of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Copying or duplicating the material from the assessment, including the taking of a photograph of secure assessment material, is a violation of the federal Copyright Act. Penalties for violations of

the Copyright Act may include the cost of replacing the compromised test item(s) or fines of no less than $750 up to $30,000 for a single violation (17 U.S.C. § 101 et seq.).

In order to ensure reliable test results and to avoid the cost of replacing test items, the Department of Education requires schools to set rules and take certain steps to protect test materials. Electronic devices such as but not limited to cell phones, smartphones, smartwatches, smart glasses, E-readers, Nooks, Kindles, iPods, tablets, camera- ready devices, and any other electronic device which can be used to photograph or duplicate test materials, access the internet and/or communicate with others during the administration of the PSSA or Keystone Exams are not permitted in any testing site. Please speak with your child and let your child know that the possession and/or use of a cell phone or other electronic device during the administration of the PSSA or Keystone Exams will result in consequences.

You will be contacted by the school if your child is discovered using and/or having a cell phone or other unapproved electronic device during the administration of the PSSA or Keystone Exams. Students who ignore this directive will be subject to the school’s discipline policy and the Department of Education’s requirement that the student’s test will not be scored and the student will be required to retake the entire exam. The electronic device will be held by school staff, and the device’s stored photographs and other functions will be examined with your permission. You may request to be present when the electronic device is examined. If a photograph of the PSSA or Keystone Exam

is discovered or if permission to search other functions of the electronic device is refused, the device will be held by the school staff. The Pennsylvania Department of Education holds the copyright to all material contained within the PSSA and Keystone Exams, the Pennsylvania Department of Education will be contacted and further action may be taken.

If, after testing is complete, it is discovered that a student used and/or had a cell phone or other unapproved electronic device during the administration of the test, the school’s discipline policy will be followed and the student’s test will not be scored.

Important Information Regarding Energy Drinks Important Information Regarding Energy Drinks

I wanted to take a moment to share some important information regarding student use of energy drinks, especially as we are on the heels of PSSA testing.

I recently read an article by Wendy Donald, “Energy Drinks and Today’s Youth: What School Nurses Need to Know,” and it highlights some concerning trends that are very relevant to what we’re seeing in schools.

A few key points that may be helpful to reinforce with your students:

  • Energy drinks often contain more caffeine than recommended for adolescents. In fact, guidance suggests teens should consume no more than about 100 mg of caffeine per day, yet many energy drinks exceed that amount in a single serving.
  • These drinks frequently include additional stimulants and high sugar content, which can contribute to negative health effects and, in some cases, require medical attention.
  • National data shows that 30–50% of adolescents consume energy drinks, despite recommendations that they should not be part of a child or teen’s diet.
  • Reported effects include increased heart rate, anxiety, dehydration, and difficulty sleeping, all of which can directly impact focus and performance in school.

With PSSA testing about to be underway, this is a great opportunity to remind students that:

  • An energy drink is not a meal
  • Skipping meals and relying on caffeine can lead to energy crashes, poor concentration, and decreased performance
  • Balanced nutrition, hydration, and rest are far more effective for sustained focus and stamina
