Conferences - November 10, 2026
Dear Families,
We are looking forward to many events during the month of November but none more than the opportunity to connect with families during the Fall Arena Conferencing on November 10th from 11:40 am - 6:50 pm.
Important Details
Arena Conferencing: In an arena conference model, each teacher is available to meet with you for up to five minutes to discuss your student’s academic progress, classroom performance and any quick questions that you may have. It is called arena conferencing because teachers are arranged in a curricular pattern in the main areas of our school; the Commons/Auxiliary Gym and the Main Gym.
Locations:
Main Gym: 6th Grade Core Teachers, 6th Grade Counselors & PE Teachers
Commons & Auxiliary Gym: 7th & 8th Grade Core Teachers, 7th & 8th Grade Counselors, Band, Choir, CTE, Drama & Leadership
Conference Structure:
We ask that parents/guardians limit each conference with each teacher to 5 minutes or less.
Students are encouraged to attend arena conferencing but are not required to attend.
Time Schedule:
Parents come in and meet with teachers in a first-come, first-serve fashion. To reduce potential long lines, we are recommending families attend at a specified time. Parents do not need to sign up for a conference time.
Requesting an Interpreter:
Please contact Jamie Harres, jamie_harres@sumnersd.org by November 5th, if you are in need of an interpreter for conferences.

When Should Your Child Stay Home?
Good attendance helps students succeed—but sometimes, staying home is the best choice.
See guidance provided by the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department. When is your child too sick for school?
Parent Curriculum Preview Night
Comprehensive Sexual Health & HIV/AIDS Prevention Curriculum
Washington State law requires that every student receive Comprehensive Sexual Health education, including HIV/AIDs prevention education, in grades 6 through 12. Because this unit covers sensitive topics, Washington State law and SBLSD board policy require that parents are provided the opportunity to preview these lessons and excuse their student from these lessons if they wish.
The district is hosting a Curriculum Review Night to provide an opportunity for parents and guardians of students currently enrolled in the classes listed below to preview Comprehensive Sexual Health and HIV/AIDS prevention teaching materials and ask questions about the resources used in the classroom.
The information below outlines how a parent or guardian may review materials and, if they choose, request an excusal for their student in accordance with state law.
- Human Growth and Development (Puberty): In accordance with RCW 28A.300.475, a parent or guardian may excuse their student from human growth and development instruction upon written request to the building principal and/or classroom teacher. Previewing instructional materials is not required to request an excusal.
- HIV/AIDS Prevention Education: Under RCW 28A.230.070, state law requires that parents or guardians attend one of the district’s information sessions in order to request that their student be excused from AIDS prevention education. Following attendance at an information session, a written opt-out request may be submitted to the building principal and/or the student’s classroom teacher.
If you are unable to attend the preview event and you wish to view the resources, please contact Instructional Services at (253) 891-6065 to schedule a viewing appointment.
