Spartan Spotlight
October 2026
Dear Spartan Families,
October is one of the most exciting months of the school year at Fargo North High School. As the fall season continues, our students are embracing opportunities to learn, compete, perform, and grow. Whether in the classroom, on the athletic fields, on stage, or through student activities, our Spartans continue to demonstrate the pride, dedication, and excellence that make North such a special place.
Spartan spirit is at an all-time high as we celebrate Homecoming Week. Throughout the week, students have participated in themed dress-up days, activities, and events that showcase the energy and pride of our school community. The week culminates with our varsity football team taking on West Fargo Sheyenne on Friday night in what promises to be an exciting matchup between two talented programs. Following the game, students will gather for the annual Homecoming Dance, providing an opportunity to celebrate friendships, school spirit, and Spartan traditions.
We are proud to recognize our August/September Spartan Athletes and Performers of the Month: Jobe Johnson, Mya Jones, Parnell Preston, Nicholas Orsono, and Lucy Paul. These students were nominated by coaches and directors for their commitment, leadership, work ethic, and excellence within their respective programs. We appreciate the positive example they set for their peers and the Spartan community.
At Fargo North, our activities and athletic programs are about much more than wins, scores, and performances. They provide valuable opportunities for students to develop character, resilience, leadership, and responsibility. A great example is our Girls Swim & Dive program, which has established the following purpose statement:
"We strive to promote and develop the emotional, mental, physical, social growth, and personal responsibility of student-athletes within the context of a competitive environment."
This philosophy reflects the broader mission of Fargo North High School as we work to prepare students for success both now and in the future.
We are also excited to announce the 2026 Fargo North Hall of Fame inductees: Greg Hammes, Prairie Rose Seminole, Shirley McCaslin, Brian Tessmann, and Durba Mitra. These outstanding individuals have made significant contributions to Fargo North and exemplify the tradition, excellence, and pride that define Spartan Nation. We look forward to honoring them during our Hall of Fame celebration as part of Homecoming festivities.
Parent-Teacher Conferences provide an excellent opportunity to connect with teachers, celebrate student successes, and discuss academic progress. Conferences will be held on Monday, October 5, and Monday, October 21, from 4:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. We encourage all parents and guardians to attend and take advantage of this valuable opportunity to partner with our staff in supporting student success.
October is filled with opportunities for growth, achievement, and connection. We appreciate the continued support of our families, students, staff, alumni, and community members. Together, we create an environment where every Spartan can thrive.
Thank you for being an important part of the Fargo North community. If you have any questions or need additional information, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Go Spartans!

Senior Cap & Gown Meeting
School Out Day - Monday, October 12
There will be NO SCHOOL on Monday, October 12 due to the Indigenous Peoples Day holiday. Classes will resume as regularly scheduled on Tuesday, October 13. View the 2026-27 FPS School Calendar to plan ahead for school out days, early outs, and other important dates for the 2026-27 school year.
Early Release Day - Wednesday, October 21
Fargo Public Schools will release learners two hours early from school to support the professional development of teachers. The early release days are Wednesdays: October 21, December 9, and February 10.
During these early release days, our teachers will be focusing on safety training, training on our new learner information system, analyzing data, setting goals for learning, and reviewing and planning research-based instructional strategies for learners who need support and those who need enrichment. Teachers will collaborate with grade- or content-level peers to review, reflect, and learn from each other in meeting learners' needs.
FPS understands that early release days may cause some inconvenience for families. However, this is an important step towards improving our teaching practices and benefiting our learners' learning outcomes.
Each school will share the schedule for early release days with families. Learners will have the opportunity for both breakfast and lunch on the early release days.
FPS busing will run two hours early for all bus routes.
Proficiency Day - October 30
Our upcoming Proficiency Day on October 30 provides students with a dedicated opportunity to demonstrate their learning through missing or additional assessments. Here’s what you need to know:
- The threshold for mandatory attendance remains unchanged for these days. More details can be found in this Google Slide Deck.
- Students who are required to attend—or who voluntarily choose to attend—will have one 45-minute period per class to complete missing assessments, retake assessments, or complete additional assessments to provide the teacher with a clear body of evidence.
- Students will not be able to work beyond that scheduled period on assessments for the same class.
- To maximize success, students are strongly encouraged to use retake opportunities throughout the semester and Spartan Period for relearning prior to Proficiency Day.
- If a student meets all thresholds, their attendance would be optional on this day.
- Normal bus schedule will be followed.
- Students that have open periods/non-assigned periods will have an assigned location to report to by by grade level. Students can leave campus and return for later mandatory periods.
- Class periods will follow the daily period schedule
We appreciate your support in reinforcing the importance of preparing ahead of time so students can make the most of these assessment opportunities.
Immunization: 11th & 12th Graders
For the school year 2026-2027, a second dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4) is required for students entering eleventh or twelfth grade. Students will need proof of two doses of MCV4 before returning to school in the fall.
Ideally, children should receive one dose of MCV4 when they are eleven to twelve years old and a booster dose on or after their sixteenth birthday. Please schedule with your child’s health care provider or your local public health.
Please have your child receive this booster by October 20th. Also, remember to bring in the documentation of the immunization date to the school.
- Students who do not meet these criteria will be excluded from school starting Wednesday, October 21, 2026, until documentation is received.
If you have any questions, pleasea reach out to Nurse Kayla at 701-446-2486.
Student IDs
- All students should have recieved their ID's.
- If students have not received their student ID they should stop in the main office.
The first ID is free. Should a student lose their ID they should come to the main office, there will be a $5.00 replacement charge.
Tips for Responsible Spending in the School Cafeteria
Are your lunch account funds not lasting as long as you expected? With meals, snacks, and beverages available in the school cafeteria, it can be easy for expenses to add up.
The following tips can help students make smart choices and manage their cafeteria spending. Parents may also want to review these tips with their students and discuss spending expectations to help make lunch account funds last.
The school meal, compared to snacks and bottled beverages, provides the best value because federal and state funds help offset the cost of breakfast and lunch.
Make the most of your school meal:
- Must include at least ½ cup of fruit or vegetables for special pricing
- Choose at least two additional meal items, such as an entrée, grain or bread item, milk, fruit, or vegetables.
- Students may select up to five meal components: one entrée, one bread or grain side, one milk, one cup of fruit, and one cup of vegetables.
Be mindful of extra purchases:
- Limit entrée choices to one serving. Additional entrées are $2.10 each.
- Consider snacks and beverages as occasional purchases or purchase them when funds are available.
- Optional items include packaged chips, crackers, cereal bars, flavored waters, and other bottled or canned beverages.
Remember: Choosing the school meal first is the best way to get a nutritious meal while making the most of your cafeteria funds!
Visit the Nutrition Services webpage for more information on school meal regulations, prices, managing lunch accounts, and applying for payment assistance.

Parent/Guardian Notifications
Hello FNH Parent and Guardians,

Thank you,

Do we show up in your news feed? Follow Fargo Public Schools on Facebook, Instagram, and X to keep up on all of the exciting things happening across the District and make sure you don't miss out on important announcements!
Here Comes the Bus
Fargo Public Schools uses the Here Comes the Bus app to help families track their students who ride the bus. This free app provides real-time notifications when your child boards or disembarks the bus, ensuring you always know their travel status. FPS strongly encourages all parents to download the app and set up notifications for added peace of mind. To set up Here Comes the Bus on your phone, click these instructions.
Students in grades K-5 who ride the bus will receive a bar-coded card that will be attached to their backpack and students in grades 6-12 will use a student ID card or input their lunch number on a bus keypad. Students need to scan their card each time they get on and off the bus. This scanning process allows FPS to confirm, in real-time, that the student is safely on the bus or has exited at the correct stop. This extra step is a critical part of ensuring the safety of all students.
Personal Communication Device Policy
Fargo Public Schools has a policy that prohibits student use of personal electronic devices during the school day (AP 4263), in accordance with the North Dakota state law.
For high school students, this means:
All personal electronic devices (excluding school issued learning devices) like phones, earbuds, smartwatches, computers and tablets must be turned off and stored in lockers throughout the school day. While in the building during the school day, students may NOT access any such devices at any time throughout the school day including passing time, lunch and/or open periods.
Students may have access to their personal devices before and after school, on shuttle busses while transporting to another site, during extracurricular events, and on high school field trips.
It is recommended students leave personal devices (phones, wireless earbuds/headphones, smartwatches, computers and tablets) at home during the school day.
If your child needs to contact you or you need to be in touch with your child, our school phones and/or the student’s school email can be used to communicate. Caregivers may also call the main office if they need to reach their student during the day.
Violations will follow a clear, progressive discipline process which is detailed below.

Attendance Success Plan
One of the focuses of Communities in Schools at North is improving attendance for all students. Attendance matters!
Ongoing conversations with your high schooler not only about grades but also about their attendance send a strong message. If your student is struggling to attend school or attend a specific class regularly here are some strategies to try in order to improve their attendance.
Student Strategies to Improve Attendance. What will your student agree to do?
I will make attending school and every class on time every day a priority.
I will try to go to sleep by ___ p.m. and set my alarm for ______ a.m.
I will commit to uninterrupted sleep (store phone in another room, be off electronics at least 30 minutes before bedtime
I will find a relative, friend or neighbor who can take me to school if I miss my bus.
When I am struggling with a challenge that is keeping me from school, I will confide in an adult at school and seek help.
If I cannot avoid missing school, I will contact my teachers to ask for materials and find out what I missed.
Caregiver Strategies to Improve Attendance. What will you agree to do?
I will try to set up medical and dental appointments for weekdays after school or on non school days.
I will call attendance at 701-446-2410 or 701-446-2411, text attendance at 701-446-8537 or email attendance at nhattendance@fargo.k12.nd.us to report the absence so my student does not get marked truant and earn detention hours
I will encourage healthy sleep and electronic routines
I will communicate with school for extra support if my student has a challenge keeping them away from school.
