From the Desk of Dr. Taylor
Dear Meridian Parents and Families,
As we move deeper into the fall season and feel the crisp change in the weather, I want to take a moment to applaud the student and family efforts. Students are showing great consistency in their learning and engagement thanks to the continued support of our families and the dedication of our staff.
October was filled with community spirit - from our Pink Wednesdays in staff support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month to our campus-wide Pink Out at the MSC featuring volleyball, student-vs-staff basketball, soccer and more! We also celebrated National Principals Month, expressing our heartfelt gratitude to Principal Stevens (ESC) and Principal Mahon (MSC) for their dedication, care, and daily commitment to student success. And, of course, our Halloween activities brought plenty of fun and creativity to the owls' nest - the costumes were amazing!
Congratulations to everyone on successfully completing Quarter 1 of the academic year. As we look ahead, we remain focused on keeping student success and development at the forefront while continuing to strengthen our family engagement and support amid the changing economy.
To continue supporting families through the month in the month of November, we're excited to gather as a community for our annual Family Fall Feast, a special event for all families to gather with gratitude ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. Stay tuned for more event details to come as well as our annual turkey drive.
Thank you for being such an important part of our community. Here’s to a great second quarter ahead.
With gratitude and excitement,
Dr. Rikki Taylor
Executive Director

Beyond the Classroom
Our MSC students and staff recently participated in a campus-wide Pink Out event for the last Wednesday of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. With the school flooded in a sea of pink, everyone enjoyed playing a series of health and wellness games, including volleyball, student-vs-staff basketball, soccer and dodgeball.
Following the school's dismissal, staff members walked through the neighborhood to outwardly show their support of Breast Cancer Awareness month.
Thank you to Coach Jackson for creating an incredible school community experience for our students and staff!
Owlstanding Updates
Kids Ride Free cards for the 2024–25 school year expired on September 30. To ensure students have transportation for SY25–26, they must obtain a new Kids Ride Free SmarTrip card.
This year, students age 13+, who use an iPhone, can convert their plastic card to a digital card in Apple Wallet, following these simple steps:
- Open Wallet app on the iPhone and tap the +.
- Choose Transit Cards, then choose SmarTrip.
- Tap Transfer Existing Card.
- Provide your card and account information.
- Accept the SmarTrip terms and conditions.
- On a flat surface, place the SmarTrip card against the back of the phone.
Done! The Kids Ride Free SmarTrip card in the Apple Wallet is now ready for use.
NOTE: The physical Kids Ride Free SmarTrip card will no longer work after conversion. Please remind your students to TAP their cards (or phones if KRF card has been converted)! The KRF SmarTrip must be tapped on the fare box or fare gate to ride for free. Visit KidsRideFree.dc.gov to learn more.
