Dear Families,

Thank you for supporting your child’s learning at home! This week, students can practice their fourth-grade learning targets through short, engaging activities with a family member. Most activities should take about 10–15 minutes and use materials you already have at home.

Reading: Point of View

Learning Target: I can compare and contrast the point of view from which different stories are narrated, including first person and third person.

At-home practice:

  1. Read a short story, a picture book, or a few pages of a book with your child.

  2. Ask your child to identify whether the story is told in first person or third person.

  3. Look for clues such as I, me, my or he, she, they, and character names.

  4. Discuss how the story might sound different if another character told it.

Ask your child:

  • Who is telling the story?

  • How do you know?

  • What is one similarity and one difference between two stories told from different points of view?

Writing: Plan and State an Opinion

Learning Targets: I can improve my writing by planning. I can use an introduction and state an opinion about a topic.

At-home practice:
Ask your child to write about this topic:

Should fourth graders have extra recess each day?

Have your child:

  1. Plan two reasons that support their opinion.

  2. Write an introduction that names the topic and clearly states an opinion.

  3. Include a reason to support the opinion.

Sentence starters:

  • I believe that…

  • One reason is…

  • Another reason is…

Family challenge: Ask your child to explain their opinion before writing. Talking through ideas can help writers organize their thoughts!

Science: Changes in the Geosphere

Learning Target: I can explain how the geosphere changes over time.

At-home practice:
Take a short walk outside or look at pictures of rocks, hills, beaches, or mountains. Discuss how land can change because of water, wind, and ice.

Ask your child to:

  1. Draw an example of land changing.

  2. Label the cause: water, wind, or ice.

  3. Write one sentence explaining how the land changes.

Ask your child: How might a puddle, a stream, or moving ice change the land over time?

Social Studies: Events Leading to the American Revolution

Learning Target: I can explain how specific events led up to the American Revolution.

At-home practice:
Ask your child to explain why the American colonists became unhappy with Great Britain.

Review these important events:

  • French and Indian War (1754–1763): Great Britain gained territory but had significant war debts.

  • Taxation: Great Britain placed taxes on the colonies, including the Stamp Act.

  • Boston Massacre (1770): A confrontation between British soldiers and colonists resulted in colonists being killed.

  • Boston Tea Party (1773): Colonists protested British tea policies by dumping tea into Boston Harbor.

  • American Revolution (1775): Fighting began between the colonists and British forces.

Family challenge: Have your child put three events in chronological order and explain how one event helped lead to the next.

Math: Numbers and Number Patterns

Learning Target: I can identify, describe, and extend number patterns.

At-home practice:
Ask your child to solve these patterns and explain the rule.

  1. 6, 12, 18, 24, ___, ___

  2. 125, 150, 175, ___, ___

  3. 480, 430, 380, ___, ___

  4. 3, 6, 12, 24, ___

Family challenge: Create a number pattern together. Have your child identify the rule and explain how they know what comes next.

Multiplication Fact Practice — Every Day!

Please practice multiplication facts at home each day for 5 minutes.

Try one of these fun activities:

  • Practice with flashcards.

  • Take turns asking and answering multiplication facts.

  • Write multiplication facts on paper and solve them.

  • Play a quick multiplication game with a family member.

Goal: Build accuracy, confidence, and speed with multiplication facts!

Missing Assignments & NHI: A Quick Guide for Parents

  • What does NHI mean? NHI stands for "Not Handed In." This means your child has not turned in a required assignment.

  • How to determine what is missing: You can log into parent backpack to see which assignments are marked NHI. The assignment name, due date, and any related details will be listed there.

  • What happens if the assignment isn’t turned in: An NHI counts as a 50 in the gradebook until the work is submitted. Once your child completes and turns in the missing assignment, the grade will be updated. If the assignment is never turned in, the NHI will remain a 50, which may significantly impact your child’s overall grade.

  • Submissions to clear an NHI must be turned in to the teacher within 2 weeks of the original assignment date.

Reassessment Policy:

After a minor assignment is given, students who have not mastered the material will be offered the opportunity to analyze and reflect on their learning, and may request a reassessment. Chandler Creek teachers will reteach concepts students haven’t mastered, then reassess relevant parts of the assignment to promote a mastery of learning concepts prior to a major assessment. Requests for reassessment must be submitted within one week of the minor grade being posted.

Volunteers in the Classroom

School Visitor and Volunteer Guidelines

Greenville County Schools (GCS), in an effort to ensure the safety of all of our students, has implemented additional security checks for school volunteers. All volunteers must submit an online application to the district and receive clearance from the district before volunteering at any school/center or chaperoning any school field trip.

Volunteers are now identified by two different categories ~ Level I or Level II. The application is the same for level I and level II (you must be 18 or older to become a volunteer). Volunteer Application Form

LEVEL I - This level requires the presence and supervision of a GCS employee at all times. Level I volunteers must have a National Sex Offender Registry check conducted every time they volunteer at the school (this is the current process each time you check into a school and/or district office). Level I volunteers may volunteer in classrooms, work in the Media Center, and participate in school activities on campus as long as staff members are present. Level I volunteers must sign in each time they volunteer. Photo identification must be presented each time for verification.

LEVEL II –This level allows interaction with students without a GCS employee present. Level II volunteers must have a National Sex Offender Registry check conducted every time they volunteer at the school as well as a criminal background check good for three years. Chaperones for field trips are required to be a Level II volunteer, regardless of the destination (YOU MUST BE 21 or older TO BE A FIELD TRIP CHAPERONE) .

Additional information can be found at https://www.greenville.k12.sc.us/Parents/main.asp?titleid=volunteers
