Hubbard Woods Family Newsletter
April 14, 2025
Dear Hubbard Woods Families,
As part of our ongoing commitment to thoughtful, research-based instruction, I’m excited to share an opportunity to engage in a district-wide conversation about early literacy and its connection to our progressive practices. During next month’s Winnetka Parent Institute (WPI), we will focus on Kindergarten through 2nd grade literacy instruction, an area of change across all schools in the district.
Led by Dr. Becky Mathison, Assistant Superintendent for Innovation, Teaching & Learning, alongside district educators, this session will offer a deep dive into how our early literacy instruction is rooted in the latest research and neuroscience, while remaining aligned with the three tenants that define progressive education in Winnetka.
Together, we’ll explore how foundational skills and knowledge building are taught through a whole child approach, experiential and meaningful learning, and fosters collaborative community to support our youngest readers. Families will walk away with a stronger understanding of what literacy looks like in K–2 and how to support reading development at home.

Hubbard Woods Scoop, Issue #1
Welcome to this edition of the Hubbard Woods School Newspaper, proudly brought to you by four of our very own 4th grade journalists! This edition is inspired by the theme of 'Night at the Mosaic', which is a beautiful reminder that, just like the tiles in a mosaic, every person in our school community adds something unique and important to the bigger picture.
As we celebrate our creativity and voices, we also want to remind you that this week is our much anticipated Spring Sing on Tuesday and Wednesday! This joyful event brings us together as one community, each class, each voice, and each note contributing to something special, much like a mosaic.
I hope you enjoy this edition and find inspiration in the ways we all connect and shine.
Happy Reading!
Lockdown Drill at 10am
This is a reminder that we will be conducting a lockdown drill at 10:00 a.m. As part of our ongoing commitment to safety, members of the local police department may be present to support the drill, depending on their availability.
Landscaping Update
We look forward to having the landscape finally completed (including sod and plantings) this spring near our new playground area. As was communicated in the fall, delays relating to the playground equipment and materials delayed this portion of the project. Due to the winter season and recent rainy conditions, the District has been advised that landscaping will most likely occur sometime in May. We appreciate your patience as Hubbard Woods has undergone both interior and exterior construction and will keep you apprised on any changes to this timeline. We very much look forward to the completion of this project!
Class Placements for 2025-2026: Parent Input Survey
As we begin planning class placements for next year, we invite you to share any unique insights about your child’s learning style or academic/social needs that you feel are important for us to consider. If you would like to provide this input, please complete the form by Friday, April 25th.
Please note that while we value your perspective, we are not able to honor specific teacher requests. Thank you for trusting our professional judgment as we work to create thoughtful and supportive learning environments for every Hubbard Woods student.
