VOGELTOWN SCHOOL TE KURA O HUATOKI
WEEK 1, TERM 3, 2025.
FROM RYVES...
SCHOOL REPORTS
Today, all children should have received their mid-year report. If you haven’t come across it yet, the school bag is a good place to start!
You’ll notice the reports look different from last year. This is due to the new curriculums and also feedback gathered from the survey many of you completed around the time of the Term 2 learning conferences.
I’m really proud of how these reports have turned out and want to acknowledge our teachers for the time and care they’ve put into them. They have worked diligently to link learning and next steps to the new curriculum teaching sequences. With the curriculum being so new, this has been a more involved process than usual. Judgements about each child’s achievement level have been made by thoughtfully considering bookwork, learning conversations, and assessment data.
All reports have been peer-reviewed and also checked by team leaders to help ensure consistency and accuracy.
We see this as a work in progress. Writing these reports has helped us identify areas for refinement, and we’ll continue to improve the format and content ahead of the end of year reports.
If you have any questions about the information in your child’s report, please speak with their class teacher and for general feedback about these, I’m always happy to hear from you.
Ngā mihi.
WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST STUDENTS AND WHANAU
This week, we welcomed new students and their whānau into our school: Nicole Tito, Layla-Rose Growden, Waldi Schoonwinkel, Ayana Schoonwinkel, Frankie Rei, Keira Lewis, Luca Skilling, Nico O'Neill, Makaia Vickers, Harper Morrison, Praise Sione and Kira Tuisaemo.
We also welcomed two new staff members - Rachel Burke, who is working as a Teacher Aide in the Taranaki team, and Shaunice van Dyk, who will be teaching in Room 8.
At Vogeltown, the pōwhiri is a special way of bringing everyone together, and it’s wonderful to now have these people as part of our Vogeltown whānau.
A treasured part of this occasion is wrapping our newcomers in the Korowai o Manaaki - our cloak of care. This taonga (treasure) is reserved for special moments. When it is placed on someone, we are gifting them the aroha of all those who have worn it before.
A huge thank you to Rachel Pretty for her work supporting our kapa haka students during the first days of term to get ready. We also want to acknowledge the boys who spoke and the girls who led the karanga. Taya, Kahleesi, Lacey, Ruby, Jahkairah, Hunter, and Reggie - you all did an outstanding job.

TERM 3 TOPIC
This term, our learning has a science and arts focus, explored through our school value of kindness and titled Kindness to Papatūānuku.
Each team has chosen to focus on either the land or the sea, using one of the following guiding scenarios:
Flourishing life on land is the foundation for all life on Earth. We are part of the Earth’s ecosystem, but human activities-like cutting down forests, destroying animal habitats, and damaging the land-have caused serious harm. To protect our future, we need to care for nature, use land in a sustainable way, and protect the variety of life (biodiversity) on our planet.
Healthy oceans and seas are vital for our survival. They cover about 70% of Earth and provide us with food, energy, and water. But we have harmed the oceans through pollution and overfishing. We must act now to stop these problems and look after all ocean life by managing our marine resources responsibly.
Key ideas classes will be exploring include:
- The Earth is precious.
- Animals are suited to their habitats and are vulnerable to environmental changes.
- Human actions have consequences for the planet.
- We can make a positive difference.
After developing an understanding of their scenario, children will be encouraged to take action through the visual arts - expressing their learning creatively and meaningfully.
It’s been exciting to see this learning already underway, and we’re looking forward to seeing where it leads!
THE POWER OF MAKING MISTAKES
Mistakes. We all make them-misspelled words, forgotten lunchboxes, wrong turns, or fashion choices that are simply too bold! But here’s the thing: mistakes aren’t failures - they’re stepping stones.
At Vogeltown School, we believe mistakes are powerful teachers. They show us where we are, and more importantly, where we can grow. When tamariki take risks, try new strategies, or step outside their comfort zone, they’ll sometimes get it wrong. That’s not something to avoid - that’s learning in action.
In fact, some of our best ideas and greatest inventions have come from mistakes. Penicillin? A mistake. Microwave ovens? Also a mistake. Even Play-Doh was originally wallpaper cleaner!
So let’s embrace the “oops” moments. Let’s model them, learn from them, and show our children that progress isn’t about being perfect - it’s about being brave enough to try, fail, and try again.
INTERSCHOOL SEMI FINALS
Many of our Paetoki learners have been involved in interschool sports during Term 2.
We are very proud to announce that our rugby and netball teams have both made the semi finals!
Our rugby team will be playing against Fitzroy School next Friday 25th July here at Vogeltown. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00pm.
Our netball team will be playing against Stratford Primary School next Friday 25th July at Stratford. The game is scheduled to start at 12:45pm.
Whānau are welcome to come and watch these games. We wish the teams all the best!
SCHOOL BOARD ELECTIONS
Thinking about becoming a school trustee? It’s a great way to get involved and make a real difference in the education of our tamariki. School boards are made up of everyday people who work together with staff, students, whānau, and the wider community to help our schools be the best they can be.
Boards are strongest when they reflect their communities, so people from all walks of life are encouraged to put their hands up - your voice and experience really do matter.
Keen to find out more? Try talking to one of our existing Board members or head to www.schoolboardelections.org.nz
PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS
It is important that we know if you have a child starting school sometime in the remainder of this year. This will allow us to put organisation in place for new students - especially those starting school, and to understand our predicted roll throughout the year.
You can do this by contacting the office to confirm that we have your child on our records, or by completing an enrolment form (which can be collected from the school or downloaded off our website).
If you know of anyone else living in zone that may be looking to enrol then please share this message with them.
INTERMEDIATE ENROLMENT PACKS
At the end of Term 2 we gave out enrolment packs to Year 6 students for both Devon Intermediate and Highlands Intermediate. If your child did not bring one home, we have spares available at the senior office.
