Reading: Informational Reading - Over the next three weeks, our class will build their knowledge about exploration, with a focus on the autobiography genre. We will read texts and view videos about important discoveries people have made on land, in the oceans, and in space. Children will also write an expository essay that explains how curiosity encourages exploration.

Writing: Publish informational writing on biomes.

Grammar: Commas in a series and perfect tense (past, present and future); indefinite, possessive and interrogative pronouns

Word Study: Latin Roots - vis/vid, aud, dict, liber and mar

Math: Fractions and Word Problems

IB Unit of Study: Different forms of government - Students will demonstrate their knowledge of a type of government by planning and acting out a skit of the leader(s) in the process of making a decision (ex. raising taxes, going to war, etc.). The class will have to guess what type of government is being portrayed.

Social Studies - Colonial Life (Comparing Colonies) - We are continuing to learn about and compare the 13 colonies. Students will create a billboard advertisement for one of the colonies. They will create a slogan and include catchy statements and illustrations to convince other settlers to come to their colony.

Science: We will explore how matter cycles between the air and the soil and among plants, animals and microbes as these organisms live and die.

In the science lab, students will learn about the critical role that earthworms play in decomposing organic material. They will observe earthworms and then design experiments to determine if they prefer dry or wet areas.
