Fourth graders, community get opportunity to watch "No Bullies"
Last week all fourth graders in the District had the opportunity to watch the Actors Playhouse present "No Bullies." Created by the Davison Community Enrichment and Recreation actors' troupe, the production focuses on everyday challenges that students face in dealing with their peers. The message is that no one is alone and we need to support one another. The performance includes thoughtful and inspiring musical songs as the musical's intent is for everyone who watches to leave empowered.
BarbaraJean Peckins Muszynski, DCER Facilities Coordinator and Assistant and Director of the Actors Playhouse, said the idea for the performance came about from working with so many kiddos right after school.
"That is when they release their stress from the day," Mrs. Peckins Muszynski said. "So many are looking for a safe place to land. Theater seems to be that for them. A no judgment zone. It got me thinking what do kiddos do when they don't have that safe place to land? I wanted to get into a deep dive with some of these kiddos and see how we as a district could help."
From there, a production was born. While the performance No Bullies lasts about an hour, high school students come out after the play to ask questions and gather feedback from the audience.
"They talk to the fourth graders and ask what they think would help - sort of a question and answer session," said Mrs. Peckins Muszynski. "The basis of the play is the different types of bullies and how they affect everyone with their actions. It also gives a glimpse into the life of people who bully. For example, our main bully, Alex, played by Gryffin Suchy lets everyone know that he is hit by his father because his dad wants to toughen him up. Miley, played by Dani Allswede offers for him to come to her dad's gym and take his anger out on the bags instead of people. She explains her dad is the toughest person she knows and he has never hit her. This is only one of the stories. After all, hurt people tend to be the ones to hurt others."
The cast includes two adult roles played by Anna Allswede and Avery Johnson. portraying the principal and secretary. There are also three main leads: Dani Allswede, Gryffin Suchy and Khaleesia Mathews.
Mrs. Peckins Muszynski said the performance is important for students and parents to see because in this day and age bullying is happening is in every community.
"You can either be the person who supports each other or the person who causes the problem," she said. "If we can form a big enough support system among the children then the population of bullies will not thrive. As much as we want to help as adults it takes the kiddos to make this happen. We talk about this in great lengths in the musical about banding together and not giving an audience to the people causing harm."
A free performance was also held for the community at 5:30 p.m. last Friday. If you didn't get a chance to see it, you will have another chance as plans are underway for another performance in August or September.

Health science students solve a mystery while learning new skill
It's an unpleasant task but Health Sciences Teacher Ms. Sarah Somers made sure her students at least had fun while learning how to read a urine dipstick and record (chart) the results.
Part of the job responsibility of a Certified Parent Care Technician is to test urine samples and record them. Ms. Somers turned the learning task into a game of mystery as she placed different types of urine (ammonia, yeast, vinegar, food coloring, distilled water and apple juice were used to simulate five different types of urine) in flower pots. After testing the PH and glucose in the simulated urine, students compared their findings to the simulated urine samples found in the flower pot.
"They solved the case and learned how to take urine samples," Ms. Somers said. "I tried to make learning an experience. I want them to remember what they have learned by remembering the day we had fun in class."
DHS, DAE names Students of the Month for May
Congratulations to the following students from Davison High School and Davison Alternative Education named as Students of the Month for May.
9th - Michael Arnold III
Nominated By: Ms. Bailey
Mikey is a good student but more importantly he's a great young man. He is friendly and kind to his peers and his teachers. He is so fun and creative during spirit days. Michael is confident and comfortable with himself in a way that many kids his age are not and it is refreshing to see! He is an inquisitive and thoughtful student who tries his best and is engaged in his learning. Great job Michael!
10th - Morgan Hoppe
Nominated By: Mr. Wilcox
Morgan is brilliant, kind, hard-working and any other positive adjective you could use to describe her. She cares about her peers, is a good team-player, and thrives in a class full of mostly juniors, as a sophomore in an upper-level Honors PreCalc Trig class. She has a bright future, because she cares about herself and her drive is high. She is an accomplished athlete, as she is a very successful swimmer. You cannot go wrong in any manner with Morgan Hoppe, whether it's doing her work, completing a task, dog sitting while you are away, or being selected as Student of the Month.
11th - Cheyanne Alexander
Nominated By: Ms. Somers
As our HOSA leader, Cheyanne Alexander has been an amazing leader not just in school but out of school as well. While keeping her grade point up at school and being the HOSA president, she is also on the pom pon team and a dance team outside of school. She is a leader in every way. I can always rely on her to step up to the plate in hard situations.
12th - Alex Hoover
Nominated By: Mr. Michalik
Alex is one of the most dedicated, honest, reliable students I have ever had. Days when he is tired, or doesn't feel well, Alex is here. Days when I'm moving slow and not feeling good myself, Alex is here during third to sixth hour to help. He is my rock! I couldn't ask for a better student teacher cadet. Alex has the heart of a lion and the drive to be one of the greatest! Alex I'm proud of you! Keep being you!
DAE - Chelsea McMillan
Nominated By: Mr. Maule and Mrs. Springsteen
Mr. Maule wrote that since Chelsea has arrived at DAE, she has been nothing but a rock star. She excels in the classroom and always has a smile on her face; she is always on top of her assignments and is a pleasure to be around. Mrs. Springsteen wrote that Chelsea is a stellar student! She is kind to others and shows a genuine interest in the lives of her peers, helping them to feel comfortable and welcomed. She is always respectful of herself, her peers and her teachers. I can always depend on Chelsea to be following along in class and doing the right thing, and asking insightful questions. She is a great contributor to our Advisory P2 discussions and is always thoughtful when answering, listening and responding to her peers. Chelsea is a wonderful student and all-around person, and I appreciate her contributions to our class and DAE overall.

Important information for Families
Michigan announces Summer Meal locations and EBT program
Some families may be eligible to receive summer meals to go for their students ages 18 and under. No application is needed! Check if SUN Meals To-Go is available and find pick-up locations where you live by visiting: https://www.fns.usda.gov/summer/sunmeals2go
Also, the Michigan Summer EBT is a program to help families buy food for their school-aged children during the summer. Families will get $120 for each eligible child to buy groceries during the summer. Children who get Michigan Summer EBT can still participate in other summer meal programs.
Some families will get Summer EBT benefits automatically, but some families will need to apply. Families must meet the income and program requirements to be eligible. Applying for or receiving Summer EBT does not affect the immigration status of your children or family.
