Protecting Our Youth: Understanding Sextortion; Knowledge is Protection

You're invited to an important community event on Wednesday, April 30, focused on preventing and understanding sextortion—a growing threat to the safety and well-being of our youth.

Hosted by the Mental Health Collaborative, this event aims to raise awareness about sextortion and its impact on youth, while empowering young people to seek help and equipping adults with the knowledge and tools to recognize, respond to, and support the challenges kids are facing. The evening will include expert-led discussions and a resource fair, all designed to support parents, guardians, and caregivers in keeping children safe in an increasingly digital world.

A featured presentation by John DeMay—“A Father’s Story: Suicide by Sextortion”—will offer a powerful and personal account of the devastating impact sextortion can have. Introduced by Brittney Bird, this presentation shares the story of John’s son, Jordan DeMay, a typical, outgoing 17-year-old whose life was tragically cut short by an online sextortion plot. John's message underscores the urgent need for awareness, education, and open conversations to help protect our youth.

  • Resource Fair begins at 5:30 PM
  • Main Program runs from 6:00 to 8:00 PM

Please note: Parental discretion is advised, as the content is not appropriate for children under age 10.

Registration is encouraged but not required. Please CLICK HERE to register.

Join us and be part of the solution in protecting our youth.

As the 2024-2025 school year nears completion, we would like to share some reminders from the Wausau East Health Office.

Current Medication at School

All medications currently kept in the health office must be picked up by an adult on or before the last day of school, June 6, 2025. Medications not picked up by the end of the school day on June 6, 2025 will be properly disposed of. If your student is attending a summer learning session and needs medication kept in the health office, it is the responsibility of a parent/guardian to transfer the medication to the summer learning site. If your student is attending summer learning at their regular school, please inform the health office staff if you plan to keep medication in the health office for summer learning.

Medication for Next School Year

All medications, prescription and over-the-counter, require an annual signed consent form or emergency action plan in order to be given at school. All medications, with the exception of emergency medications (EpiPens, inhalers, diabetic medications), must be kept in the health office at all times. Students need permission from a medical provider to self-carry emergency medication so we request that the proper action plans be completed. Eye contact lens supplies & cough drops may be carried by students. Stock ibuprofen and acetaminophen will be kept in the health office for students in grades 7-12. A completed consent form is required each school year in order for acetaminophen or ibuprofen to be administered. You can complete a form at Schedule Pick-Up Day, turn it in to the health office directly, or fax/email it to one of the health office staff members. We do not have access to forms completed online at this time and cannot accept verbal consent. All forms can be picked up from the health office during school hours or found on the Wausau School District website under Health Services.

Immunizations

The Wisconsin Student Immunization Law (State Statute 252.04) requires certain immunizations for students enrolled in Wisconsin schools. This form explains which immunizations are required for different age groups. An annual report is completed in September to ensure all students are up-to-date or have a waiver on file. Contact your healthcare provider or the Marathon County Health Department if you are looking to get your student up-to-date. Contact your student’s health office or visit the Wausau School District Health Services page to get a waiver form.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions.

Sleeping In Class Sleeping In Class

zoom_out_map

While attendance is critical to learning, so is being engaged while here. We know some of our students struggle with sleep, but cannot condone school being a place where that takes place. If a student is sleeping at school, we will contact you and schedule a meeting so that you as a family can devise a plan and convey that plan to us. We will not allow students to remain in our classrooms when we have to keep waking them up. Students doing so can be cited for truancy as they are not logging into their classes. Our students' futures are far too important for us to allow a pattern of sleeping at school. If you have ideas on additional ways we can address this problem, we are happy to hear them.

Grading Policies Grading Policies

All APEX classes are expected to be closed out by the individual due date indicated for the student to graduate on time. If the student does not complete the class in time, it will be closed out with a grade of F on the transcript. The class may be re-taken according to the grade replacement policy below. Students may request one extension per class. Requests must be submitted to the Principal in writing and will be granted on a case-by-case basis for a maximum of 4 weeks.

Students are permitted to retake courses with an earned grade F (failed) that have been taken at EEA. Courses taken in other Districts or other states are not available for retake.

Grade replacement for F grades is permitted under these circumstances:

  • Student must have earned a grade of F; no grade replacement will be allowed for grades higher than this

  • The student enrolls in the identical course in which the F was earned

Other considerations regarding grade replacement policy:

  • Where the identical course is no longer available, a student will not be permitted to utilize grade replacement

  • When a student utilizes grade replacement, only the higher of the two grades earned for the course will be awarded credit and quality points (for GPA purposes) and appear on the transcript. The original class will remain on the transcript with a NCR (No Credit Received) grade but will no longer be calculated in the overall GPA.

Please feel free to reach out to your students' classroom advisor for any questions regarding their grades and credit standing.

EEA Resources EEA Resources

It is our goal to help connect our families with things they may need. We all fall on hard times occasionally. If there are things that we can connect you with, please let Mrs. Nilles (snilles@wausauschools.org) our school social worker know. Her job is to connect our families with resources. This can be anything from a bed for a child, to regular grocery supplies. Please, let us help! If you are worried that asking for these things will lead to issues for you, please do not worry! We are simply wanting to assist if possible.
