Message from Dr. Taylor
Dear Mustang Families,
Homecoming Week has been awesome!
Seniors, just a quick reminder that your year of activities have already begun with the start of cap and gown ordering this past Wednesday. If you did not get your packet, some are available in the main office. Page 2 of the senior guide has a convenient list of activities to keep you on track. Print a copy and post it on your fridge. Occasionally, times and locations will change slightly so please continue to read the Principal’s Blog each Friday for updates. You can also find senior information on our website.
Sincerely,
Dr. Alexandria Taylor

Hispanic Heritage Month
Featuring - George Meléndez Wright
George Meléndez Wright was only 23 years old when he became the first Spanish-speaking professional in the National Park Service, but the parks and their wildlife were nothing new to him. While studying forestry and zoology at the University of California, Berkeley—he joined the student body at 16—Wright used his summer vacations to visit every national park in the western United States. He climbed to the top of Mount Rainer in Washington, explored the Grand Canyon in Arizona, and, in Alaska’s Denali, even become the first scientist known to discover the nest of a Surfbird.
Based on those experiences, and others he had after moving to Yosemite National Park as a ranger naturalist in 1927, the young biologist began to formulate an idea that seems obvious today but was groundbreaking at the time: He wanted to establish a model of wildlife management in the parks based on science. And to make such an undertaking possible, he hoped to organize a wildlife survey of all the western parks.

Shoutouts!
Two MHS Grads Receive Next Step Grants
Two recent Mundelein High School graduates were recognized Sept. 9 by the District 120 School Board after receiving $2,500 Next Step grants from the Lake County Regional Office of Education Foundation (LCROEF).
The new grant was created to fill a critical gap in the support system for students pursuing life after high school. There are no restrictions so long as the funds directly support students identified as having significant financial need.
The recipients are Sarai Herrera, a student at the College of Lake County and Deacon Jensen, who is currently studying at Northern Illinois University. They have similar backgrounds. Both graduated from MHS in May 2025 and they both come from low-income households without a father.
D120 Transition Center Building Named in Honor of Former Superintendent
The Mundelein District 120 community celebrated the first completed project of its Facilities Improvement Plan on Sept. 10 with a ceremonial ribbon cutting ceremony in the newly named “Myers Education Center.”
The building, which recently became the new home of the D120 Transition Center, honors former District 120 Superintendent Kevin Myers who retired in June after serving Mundelein schools for 11 years. Located just west of Mundelein High School, the building was originally the Kirk of the Lakes Church before District 120 purchased it and used it as the MHS Annex.
The D120 School Board approved the building’s renaming on Sept. 9, one night before the Transition Center’s Grand Opening.
Honoring Myers in this way is a good fit, current District 120 Superintendent Corey Tafoya said, because of his work on the successful building bonds referendum that funded the project and because of Myers’ background as a special education teacher.
“His work symbolizes this project in a very tangible way,” Tafoya said.
District 120 School Board President Peter Rastrelli said Myers’ impact goes far beyond bricks and mortar.
“He believed deeply in creating opportunities within our own community so that students - especially those in special education - could be educated in their neighborhood schools, in the least restrictive environment possible,” Rastrelli said.

Last Saturday we ran at the Crystal Lake Invite at legendary Veterans Acres. We were a bit short-handed and used the race as a workout for the varsity group. We still managed to take 4th out of 9 teams. We were led by junior Izic Miller in 13th place. Also medaling for us were senior Andrew Weaver in 19th, junior Mason McMurray in 20th, senior Nathan McCreight in 35th, junior Delmar Mena in 37th, junior Adrian Pacheco Reyes in 45th, and senior James Glaskin-Clay in 49th.
The F/S squad won the team title again out of 8 teams, led by individual champion Aidan Sweet, who narrowly beat his teammate Erick Cordova in 2nd. Advik Sharma ran a strong race taking 5th. Freshman Nick Moberg continues to show improvement by taking 16th, with Jake Williams closing out the scoring in 21st.
On September 9th we had our first conference quad at Waukegan. We lost to Lake Zurich 15-50, but beat Libertyville 15- 46 and Waukegan 15-50. Izic Miller led the way in 9th place overall with a time of 17:16. The spread between our top 5 was only 18.6 seconds. Great job Mustangs! Next up- the Springfield Lanphier Invite on Saturday.

This past weekend, Varsity participated in the New Trier Invite, and the JV2 team went to the Libertyville Invite. Both teams played 5 games each which helped improve communication and both defense and offense skills. This week, all levels took on Lake Zurich on Tuesday and Zion-Benton on Thursday in front of full crowds. The energy and excitement was fantastic!
Looking ahead, our Mustang program will play again at Grayslake North on Monday and the JV team will play Monday at home against Grayslake North and on Wednesday at Stevenson. We would love to pack the gym and show our Mundy Pride! JV, JV2, and Freshmen A play at 5:00pm and Varsity and Freshmen B play at 6:00pm. See you there!
