ORIGINAL LETTER ABOUT FUNDRAISER

Dear Jackson Families,

We are coming to you with an emergency call for fall funding.

Every year, the JMS PTA raises around $20k for our General School Support Fund through our Fall Rip City Popcorn fundraiser.

Unfortunately - the day of our Rip City kick-off coincided with the first day of the teacher’s strike. Ouch!

So we’re switching to a general appeal for the funding our school needs. The best part - you experience the thrill of GIVING without the popcorn in your teeth!

Why is the PTA fundraising?

Great question.

Fact: Did you know that Oregon allocates 5% less than the national average of funding per student per year? And 10% less than our neighboring states (California & Washington) Source: Oregon Live

State funding alone does not cover the cost of a thriving JMS community.

When it comes to school activities, equipment, events and speakers — the Jackson PTA steps in.

Where does the money go?

The PTA General Fund pays for:

  • General school supplies;

  • Assemblies & speakers;

  • Equitable access to special events (like school dances & Oaks Park);

  • Staff & Teacher grants for larger items (computers, sewing machines, audio gear), assemblies;

  • Library books;

  • Sun School needs;

  • Teacher appreciation.

Friends, the PTA gives the school around $65,000 per year to cover these items.

In other words, about $80 per child currently enrolled at Jackson Middle.

How do we raise $$?

PTA dues account for a very small portion of our fundraising activities. The majority of our fundraising comes from our fall fundraiser (canceled early due to strike) and the Bernstein Bash.

(See chart below)

WE NEED TO RAISE $20,000 to offset the loss of our Fall Fundraiser. Can you help us by making a December donation to the PTA?

Thank you for your generous support,

Kate Cockrill, PTA President
