Dear Rose City Park Families,

It has been so good to welcome students back this week after spring break. There’s a renewed energy in the building, and it’s been wonderful to see classrooms full of learning and connection again.

As we move into the spring season, I want to share a few important updates and reminders.

1. Calendar Updates

Due to furlough days that Portland Public Schools employees are required to take, there are a few changes to the school calendar.

There will be no school on Friday, May 1.
The last day of school is now Friday, June 5.
April 22 and May 13 will now be full school days, with no late arrival or early release.

Because of these changes, some school events may be adjusted. Please keep an eye on your teacher’s newsletters for any updates specific to your child.

Here is the revised 2025-26 district calendar.

2. OSAS Testing (Grades 3–5)

State testing will begin soon for our 3rd through 5th grade students. Your child’s teacher will share specific testing dates.

To help your child feel confident and ready, you can support them by making sure they get a good night’s sleep and arrive at school on time. A calm, encouraging start to the day goes a long way.

Breakfast is available at school each morning for all students, so they can begin the day ready to learn. We appreciate your partnership in helping students do their best.

3. HeART of Portland – Student Arts Showcase

Congratulations to our Rose City Park student honorees:

Nora Woodlee, Song Linh Markway Wallace Callahan, and Izzy (Isabelle) Lien. We are so proud of their incredible work and representation of our school community.

Families are invited to attend the HeART of Portland Arts Showcase on Wednesday, April 15 at the Portland Art Museum. This special event celebrates student creativity from across PPS and is free and open to all.

4. Summer Acceleration Academy (SAA)

If your student is eligible for Summer Acceleration Academy, you will receive an email invitation soon. This program offers a fun and engaging way for students to build skills in reading, math, and LEGO Robotics.

Invitations are sent via email, so please check your inbox and spam folder. Enrollment is first come, first served and fills quickly.

Seats are limited and filled on a rolling basis, and enrollment will close as grade levels and sites reach capacity.

The program runs from June 29 through July 30, and enrollment means your student is expected to attend the full program. Consistent attendance helps students get the greatest benefit from the experience.

You can learn more at www.pps.net/SAA.

We’d also like to recognize our outstanding music teacher, Ms. Gannett, and our talented art teacher, Ms. Vang, for their role in supporting student creativity and achievement. Their dedication helps make opportunities like the HeART of Portland Student Arts Showcase possible. This week’s staff spotlight features Ms. Vang and Ms. Gannett. Be sure to read below to learn more about them!

Thank you, as always, for your partnership and support. It truly makes a difference for our students and our community.

With gratitude,

Principal Orbase

April 2026

The last day to refer a student for TAG Identification and make sure that the referral is completed this school year is April 10th. You may refer your student all year long, but the process for referral takes up to eight weeks, so may not be completed by the last day of school June 5th. We do not process TAG referrals in the summer, because PAT staff is not available to provide important input.

The Single Subject Acceleration-Math application window has closed. Schools will receive assessments in the next week and families will be notified of decisions by May 31st.

Kindergarten Committee - NEW

PTO is forming a Kindergarten Committee to help incoming families for the 2026/2027 school year. We will connect current RCP parents with incoming families as they navigate PPS and RCP for the first time. This can be overwhelming! The committee will also plan three playdates this summer. If you are interested in helping, please email Chelsea teacher.support@rosecityparkpto.org.

Staff Appreciation Week - Gifts & Donations!

PTO hosts an amazing gift raffle during staff appreciation week (May 4-8) where every staff member receives a gift worth at least $100. It is truly a favorite tradition for the staff! With all the PPS and RCP budget cuts, we hope to make it extra special for our hard-working staff this year. Some examples in the past include gift cards (restaurants, hair salons, massages), tickets to sporting events, wine tasting, local and handcrafted goods. If you want to donate, please email Chelsea teacher.support@rosecityparkpto.org.

Spring Carnival - moved to a fall festival!

We are moving our spring carnival to the fall for the 2026/2027 school year! Due to the timing of the PPS school year, RCP events, and the Rose Junior Parade (now on Saturday May 30), there isn't much time for a spring carnival! Stay tuned for more details in the fall!

⚽🏀🏓 PE 🏓🏀⚽ ⚽🏀🏓 PE 🏓🏀⚽

Beginning March 30, PE will be rolling! There is a bunch of helpful information below, PLUS volunteer opportunities!

  • Your student can bring their labeled helmet, bike, and/or scooter. Riding to school is encouraged!

    • Enter through the gym and park in the courtyard (it will be covered!)

    • On your PE day, you can park in the gym.

  • Labeled bikes, scooters, and helmets can stay at school or come home- up to families!

  • Grades K, 4, & 5 will use bikes. I have extras for those who can’t bring theirs. Sign up to volunteer here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080A4FA9A92FA4F85-49390820-bike#/

    • Kindergarten: Please leave all training wheels at home. I will remove them if you can’t take them off before we start. We use balance bikes instead of training wheels with the goal of pedaling at the end! I could use some volunteers that first week to help with helmet and bike fitting!

  • Grades 1, 2, & 3 will use scooters. I have extras for those who can’t bring one. If your student brings a bike, they can ride that or the scooter.

  • Students without personal helmets will be sharing school-provided helmets. Plastic shower caps will be provided by the school.

  • Fill out this form so your student has permission to leave campus: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdrRRajd0dY7iN44k1tQ1NGukBke2a8Rq1D9e0TFDvlc6cMAw/viewform

To help with the increase of bikes, we need volunteers to supervise AM intersections. Sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080A4FA9A92FA4F85-49390820-bike#/
