Greetings from the DAC Chair Greetings from the DAC Chair

Welcome to your March newsletter

Spring break is almost here! February was a busy month for the DAC. The snow made us reschedule the SAC training, and unfortunately, it caused some conflict for many looking to attend. The session is recorded and you can find it here. Elementary school SACs learned about student support provided by the Read Act plans, while middle and high school SACs got an insight into the new platform, SchooLinks, which is used for the Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP). Students can start earlier to explore how their interests lead into a career field and how they can plan their academic future accordingly. Parents have access to their students' profiles by logging in with the email they use for Powerschool and then clicking reset password. SchooLinks will help parents to have an informed conversation since studies show that students benefit greatly from having their parents as their main source of information, especially in middle school.

In the 2nd half of the meeting, the department of D11 Engagement gave an extensive update on their plans for communication with families. The goal is a single log-in platform that also allows for 2-way communication in multiple languages. They explained the difference in what the district is using right now with platforms like the loop, powerschool, schoology, apps like class dojo, the PS attendance intervention suite, and Let’s Talk. Their vision is to move from a system that pushes information out to true 2-way communication.

At the DAC meeting, the department for student engagement shared information on social emotional and cognitive learning SECL as well as student teaming and student agency. Many studies like this one are available online, showing the many benefits of SEL, including the increase in student academic achievement. If you don’t see the benefits of it, it is worth having a conversation at the school level. Read on for more subcommittee updates.

DAC representatives have been visiting SACs in their area. Thank you to all the principals and SAC chairs who welcomed us. Building community and getting to know each other is essential in order to support each other. If your SAC hasn’t had a visitor yet, please reach out to me and we will get that done. One of the schools I visited last week was Galileo Middle School, which is in the process of becoming a Community school. You will find more information included in this newsletter.

The Board of Education is having a Board Retreat on March 12, which is still a public meeting but is not televised or recorded, so check out BoardDocs for the agenda and location, to attend in person and learn what the board wants to accomplish for the rest of the school year.

Please continue to share the DAC newsletter with your community in your school’s newsletter or as a link on your school’s SAC page.

Respectfully,

Marion Clawson

Galileo Middle School Making Strides

The recent unanimous vote from the Colorado State Board of Education, approving Galileo Middle School's strategic plan in becoming the first school in Colorado to use the community school pathway as a transformation strategy, has begun with the recent opening of the Ascend Center at Galileo. This is step one in the two-year plan that has Galileo fully implementing the community school strategy in 2026-2027 school year.

Becoming a community school will play a pivotal role in supporting student achievement by fostering a holistic educational environment that addresses the multifaceted needs of students. Supports will include and can extend beyond traditional academic instruction by offering a broad spectrum of wraparound services and family support.

By integrating community resources and involving families and local organizations in the education process, Galileo Middle School will build strong, collaborative networks to reinforce student development both inside and outside the classroom. This comprehensive approach not only improves academic performance but also enhances social-emotional well-being, attendance rates, and overall student engagement, thereby contributing to a more equitable and effective education system.

STAR Assessments STAR Assessments

Pre-K–Grade 12

Star Assessments are short tests that provide teachers with personalized learning data for each student.

Star tests are computer adaptive, which means they adjust in difficulty to each answer students provide. This helps teachers get the best data to help students in the shortest amount of testing time (about one-third of the time other tests require).

Students may take a Star test for early literacy, math, or reading. Teachers analyze the data they receive from Star Assessments to learn what students already know and what they are ready to learn next, to monitor student growth, and to determine which students may need additional help.

Star Assessments are research-based and scientifically proven to help teachers guide each student on their unique path to proficiency.

More information on this testing and assessments can be found on the STAR website.

SAC Agenda Planning – March (Theme: “One Plan”/USIP updates-if needed, catch up on delayed topics)

Every month we intend to provide a reasonable flow of SAC agenda topics that meet the broad responsibilities of School District 11 SACs. This is just a reference tool, and individual SACs should tailor their agendas appropriate to their school needs and emphasis. The following are some of the topics recommended for the March SAC meeting:

  • Review results of available performance monitoring data and compare to “One Plan”/USIP goals.
  • Review/discuss possible “One Plan”/USIP adjustments (if needed)
Catch up on delayed topics and/or school unique issues.

New Resource from Colorado Department of Education (CDE):

The Office of Family School Community Partnership (FSCP), in partnership with the Federal Programs and Supports Unit and the School Improvement and Planning Office, just released a State and Federal Accountability Crosswalk for Stakeholder Engagement. This document provides a crosswalk to identify and integrate stakeholder engagement activities that meet both State and Federal accountability requirements. The crosswalk illuminates how stakeholder engagement requirements under ESEA, EASI, and ESSA can be integrated and documented in the Unified Improvement Planning process, to create a comprehensive plan for stakeholder engagement that eliminates redundancy and maximizes time and effort of staff, families, and stakeholders.

Subcommittee Updates Subcommittee Updates

Attention SAC Leaders! Attention SAC Leaders!

zoom_out_map

It is time to start thinking about your school’s 2025-2026 Unified School Improvement Plan! We want to make sure that the USIPs of all schools have community input, and we also want the process to be effective and respectful of everyone’s time. To that end, we have made a plan with District leaders that we think will ensure SAC/community involvement.

Principals had a K-12 Principal meeting on Tuesday March 4. In this meeting, they reflected on this year’s USIP… what went well at the school, as well as areas of opportunity that may need to move forward into next year’s plan. SAC Call to Action: During your March meeting, please discuss this with your Principal, and give your input as a SAC on what you think went well this year and what are areas of opportunity from the perspective of the community. They are being given this same call to action. If you don't have another meeting scheduled prior to April 22, please reach out to your principal to offer your help and support in gathering community input and feedback.

We will be meeting with District leaders about this topic again in late April, to build on the process and we will send out next steps then. Thank you for your patience and trust as we build and test out a new process!

DAC Accreditation/Achievement Committee

From Your DAC Budget Subcommittee

The DAC Budget Subcommittee has been diligently looking over and discussing incremental budget requests to provide feedback to the Board of Education. These would mostly be allocations of previously unused funds as one-time additions to the 2025-2026 budget that is under development. The requests vary from providing students with peak experiences in music and study abroad programs, CTE programing, athletics support, and graduation costs for Ed Robson Arena at the Colorado College Campus.

The larger funding items were requested to support student-based budgeting, pathway education in the secondary level, and investing in student agency as a main strategy moving forward in D11. The Board has provided direction to prioritize compensation using any increased ongoing funding from State, as well as existing fund balances not needed for reserves.

In addition to the budget requests, the subcommittee was given updates on budgetary aspects of the ongoing and developing Jenkins Middle School project , along with Board budget priorities including staff compensation, peak experiences, and supporting major academic improvement strategies. The subcommittee is continuing to monitor student (site) based budgeting and would encourage all SACs to have conversations about this process at their meetings. More details on what your DACBC is doing can be found here.
