December brings special and cheery celebrations! For Norfolk Public Schools, the month includes one of our most important occasions: the Teacher of the Year awards ceremony. Our annual recognition of the best of the best of our teachers allows school division staff to come together in support of the heroes who provide lessons in mathematics, reading, science, history-social sciences, art, and music, along with so much more. These dynamic educators bring empathy and compassion, enthusiasm and cheer to every student, every day, no matter what.

The current Teacher of the Year, Lake Taylor High School Art Teacher Clayton Singleton, will pass on the title at the event later this month. Please visit our Teacher of the Year webpage to see all the nominees and watch for our “Top Twelve Teachers” countdown on our social media pages. Truly, our educators deserve applause for their enduring dedication and commitment to the children of our city.

This year, Norfolk Public Schools has introduced additional means to recognize the efforts of our teachers and other staff, including the Rock Star Teacher Award and the No Matter What recognition. These monthly kudos acknowledge the daily, weekly, and monthly contributions of our educators and other staff, in addition to the overall, annual accomplishments honored by Teacher of the Year.

Visible, impactful measures such as these underscore our deep and enduring commitment to retaining and supporting our current staff. Moreover, our school division strives each day to hire additional educators, administrators, bus drivers, safety and security personnel, custodians, and all those who support our mission and vision for outstanding outcomes for each child. In the coming months, Norfolk Public Schools will initiate new recruitment and retention strategies. I trust that you will join us here and on all our platforms to learn more.

Please accept my warmest wishes for the happiest of holidays and a joyous New Year. I am looking forward to 2024!

The School Board held its twice annual Recognition Ceremony on November 30, 2023, at Norview High School. Those recognized included student-athletes, championship winners, contest winners, outstanding clubs, and young artists, along with staff.

It was also the first time Norfolk Public Schools honored volunteers and staff with two new awards: the 40+ Club and the No Matter What recognition. The 40+ Club recognizes and celebrates volunteers who have completed 40 or more hours of service to Norfolk Public Schools per semester. The recipients were parents, family members, community members, and community partners who logged more than 40 hours in the school division’s volunteer management system.

Any Norfolk Public Schools’ employee may qualify for the No Matter What nomination. Each school and department nominated an employee for their “No Matter What” spirit, defined as “going above and beyond” to ensure Equity and Excellence for All. This may include contributions to school pride or school spirit, literacy, school safety and climate, attendance, accountability, parent and community involvement, and innovation.

Congratulations to all those recognized!

Students from preschool through grade 5 found plenty of “Ways to Make Sunshine” during the All Norfolk Reads event of Renee Watson’s book! All participating students received a free copy of the book to give more than 14,250 students the opportunity to read and learn together with classmates and their families. Festivities included kickoff events such as a sunshine-themed dance party, trivia challenges with prizes, and a sweet finale with ice cream treats.

Norfolk Public Schools remains focused on literacy as an educational priority for the success of all students. Reading, writing, communication, and critical thinking skills take place in all content areas of the school division’s curriculum, in every classroom, every day, no exceptions. For example, during math classes, students use reading strategies to understand the meaning of math problems, use writing to communicate and justify mathematical reasoning, communicate by listening to or responding to the ideas of others, and think critically by applying knowledge to solve real-world problems.

Try a Think Aloud! “Read a selected passage aloud,” say the reading enrichment gurus at ReadingRockets.org. “At certain points stop and ‘think aloud’ questions and answers, modeling what good readers do. For example, if you’re reading A River Dream by Allen Say, you might say “This book reminds me of a time my father took me fishing. Do you remember a time when you went fishing or did something fun outside with your family?”

Are you following along with us as our students and staff continue to illustrate the importance of being in school on time, every day, and ready to learn? The Norfolk Public Schools’ School-to-School Attendance Challenge is one way the division is combating chronic absenteeism, but as a parent and guardian, you can help us build the habit of good attendance, too!

The non-profit initiative Attendance Works offers tips to help get your scholar to school on time every day:

  • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
  • Keep your child healthy and make sure your child has the required shots.
  • Introduce your children to their teachers and classmates before school starts.
  • Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
  • Try to schedule non-COVID-19 related medical appointments and extended trips when school is not in session.
  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, and other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.
  • If you are concerned that your child may have COVID-19, call your school for advice.
  • If your child must stay home due to illness or quarantine, ask the teacher for resources and ideas to continue learning at home.

NPS’ School-to-School Attendance Challenge will continue to be featured on all division communications platforms, including social media channels such as Facebook, X, Instagram and YouTube. Follow us to stay up to date on the challenge and all the incredible work of NPS’ students and staff.

School Board of the City of Norfolk Appoints Interim Board Member for Ward 5 School Board of the City of Norfolk Appoints Interim Board Member for Ward 5

zoom_out_map

On Tuesday, November 8, 2023, the City of Norfolk School Board unanimously appointed Nichelle Stone to the vacant Ward 5 seat.

Stone will complete the remainder of the term of Ms. Lauren Campsen, who resigned from the School Board in September due to health concerns. Stone’s appointment will expire on December 31, 2024. A special election for the Ward 5 School Board seat will be held later.

Stone holds a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Religious Studies from the College of William and Mary. She is also a graduate of Norfolk Public Schools. Stone works as a paralegal at Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers in Norfolk and has served as the president of the Northside Civic League.

“I love Norfolk so much,” Stone said during her interview with School Board members on November 1st. “We have such a diverse population that has shaped so much of the way I navigate the world. That’s something very special we offer to kids.”

Stone said that as a School Board member she would examine how the school division delivers education, reflect the values of her community, and consider what each child needs to come to school and learn.

School Board Chair Dr. Adale Martin said she and other members welcome Stone and look forward to working with her.

“We are excited to continue the work of the school division with Mrs. Stone,” Martin said. "We welcome her fresh perspective and her dedication to the students of Norfolk Public Schools, along with her commitment to a focus on excellent student outcomes.”

Lake Taylor School Makes Donation to Sentara Brock Cancer Center Lake Taylor School Makes Donation to Sentara Brock Cancer Center

The Titans of Lake Taylor School (LTS) raised $1,000 for the Sentara Brock Cancer Center! Students and staff were on hand to present the check to City of Norfolk School Board Member Dr. Noëlle M. Gabriel, along with a representative from Sentara.

“Our kids are so generous, and they really care about doing for others. This particular fundraiser is great because it’s tangible,” said Dr. Gabriel, who is a pediatrician. “They may have been impacted by a family member or a neighbor who has had cancer and this is a way for them to give back and see their giving in action.”

The money raised will go toward copays, prosthetics, wigs, helping patients obtain transportation to appointments, and other needs. Ms. Yvette Dalton's 4th grade class and Mr. Evan Glendinning’s 7th grade history class were the top donors.

Principal Dr. Melanie Patterson said, “It turned into a good, healthy competition. I am so proud of my students and staff! This shows the kids how blessed they are that they were able to do for others and impact someone else’s life at such a young age themselves.”

Brock Cancer Center plans to return to Lake Taylor School in the spring to introduce faculty and LTS’ families to the mobile mammography unit and to provide information about cancer screening and awareness.

Lake Taylor School achieves Apple Distinguished School Recognition Through 2026 Lake Taylor School achieves Apple Distinguished School Recognition Through 2026

Lake Taylor School (LTS) is pleased to announce it has been recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for the 2023-2026 program term! The Titans were selected for this distinction based on their commitment to continuous innovation in education and using Apple products to create exemplary learning practices.

LTS is a K-8 school within Norfolk Public Schools. Principal Dr. Melanie Patterson and her staff have transformed the school’s educational programs to include shifting the school’s focus to technology.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, two iMac labs were established, and all teachers were given MacBooks, iPads, and training. Students were also given iPads to use as an alternative to Chromebooks during the near-total national public school shut down.

As schooling at NPS quickly morphed into virtual learning during the pandemic, LTS’ teachers and staff seized the opportunity to use Apple devices and software to enhance instruction and the school participated in the Apple Ambassadors program. In the fall of 2021, two Technology Integration Program Specialist (TIPS) positions were allocated to LTS to support its technology integration into instruction. The TIPS were effective in establishing LTS’ Apple Pathway School status, maintaining the school’s digital presence, creating community and business partnerships, and leading the charge toward achieving recognition as an Apple Distinguished School.

“Our success is a direct reflection of your collective efforts,” TIPS Corinne Hupman said as she addressed LTS’ staff and students during the school’s recognition celebration on November 15. “The countless hours dedicated to professional development, innovative lesson plans crafted, unwavering support provided to our students by staff, and the way our students creatively and purposefully integrated technology into showing their learning ‑‑ every contribution has played a pivotal role in shaping our journey!”

Apple Distinguished Schools are centers of innovation, leadership, and educational excellence. They use Apple technology to inspire, imagine, and impact teaching and learning schoolwide.

“The jobs that are here today will not be the jobs that are available when our students enter the workforce. We don’t want to just teach our students how to use an iPad, we want to teach how to use critical thinking and problem solving with technology, so our students grow and are ready for whatever comes their way,” said LTS’ TIPS Andrea Redman.

During the ceremony, LTS’ Apple representative presented the administration with a framed certificate to proudly display in the school for all to see!

Each month in the #NPSNotableAlumni feature, Norfolk Public Schools’ graduates share what their NPS education meant to them – and where it has carried them so far.

“Who here in this room has gone from Tidewater Park to the White House?”

Edward Sivells, who graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1983, asked that question while speaking to a group of students. The answer? Sivells himself.

Sivells spent 26 years in the Navy, becoming a cook and eventually working his way through the ranks to become a senior chief petty officer. His skills and experience landed him a job cooking in the White House for Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

When he was a student, Sivells never expected his career would take him to the White House. Sivells became a father at 15 years old. He and his girlfriend Sharon (now his wife of more than 40 years) moved into an apartment across the street from Booker T. Washington and walked to school.

No matter what, Sivells said, his teachers at Booker T. Washington never let him stop focusing on his future.

“The teachers at Booker T. showed me empathy but didn’t let me have a sense of entitlement,” Sivells said. “I was still expected to run track and get the grades, even though my responsibility had increased.”

He carries those high expectations with him and instilled them in his four children – one of whom, Leon Sivells, is a Maury High School teacher.

Sivells retired from the Navy. He now works part-time at the Center for Military and Veterans Education at Tidewater Community College and serves as pastor at The Breaking of Day Ministries and is enthusiastic about finding ways to give back to Norfolk and the schools that defined him.

“You have to find your motivation, and in finding that, it will help you succeed,” Sivells tells students. “Statistics say I shouldn’t have been in the White House, but my teachers taught me to pay attention, stay motivated, and stay away from distractions.”
