Message from Principal McKillop

Good Evening, Cougar Nation!

The first two weeks of our second semester have been quite busy and very exciting!

I am pictured above with one of our student athletes before we departed for the Unified Basketball game at Milford High School that took place today. Milford hosted us for a school assembly game, and the energy was palpable! It was a close game, and the Cougars ended up winning by two points in the last minute.

Please see many pieces below that highlight some of the amazing things our students are doing inside and outside of our classrooms. As you'll read below, we have two seniors that created a special evening to celebrate learning differences this past Tuesday, which was followed by a short film festival showcasing student films. Thanks to the many teachers and staff members who assisted our students the night of the event!

As shared on the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) website, National School Counseling Week 2024 is Feb. 5-9, and aims to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems. National School Counseling Week, sponsored by ASCA, highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. National School Counseling Week is always celebrated the first full week in February. We are grateful for the work our school counselors do to help our students. The 2024 theme is "School Counseling: Standards-Based, Student-Focused."

Please see the table of contents below. I would encourage you to read through the entire newsletter at some point this weekend if time allows.

Have a wonderful weekend, and GO COUGARS!

Best,

Heather

Hugh O'Brian Leadership Conference

The ConVal Regional High School Counseling Department has announced that sophomores Benjamin Michaud and Nora Eliopoulos were selected to represent ConVal at the 2024 Hugh O’Brian Leadership Conference in May. The HOBY Conference is a weekend-long program held at the St. Anselm College, and will host sophomore student leaders from across New Hampshire.

The seminar provides an opportunity for high school sophomores to recognize their potential talents and apply them in becoming effective, ethical leaders of the future. An estimated 7,500 sophomores attend the seminars in all 50 states and Canada each year. At the end of each seminar a boy and girl from each location is selected to attend the World Leadership Congress.

HOBY’s mission is to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. HOBY programs are conducted annually throughout the United States, serving local and international high school students. HOBY programs provide youth selected by their schools to participate in unique leadership training, service-learning and motivation-building experiences.

Celebrating Learning Differences

On Tuesday, January 30, ConVal High School hosted a community dinner and short film festival devoted to the theme of "Celebrating Learning Differences." The event was initiated and organized entirely by students.

More than 100 people filled the ConVal cafeteria for the dinner and then the Lucy Hurlin Theatre for the film festival that followed. The student films that were shown included "Wildlife" by RJ Woodin, "Monadnock Worksource" by Ryan Charron/Rj Woodin, "Inside The Mind" by Violette Dube, "My Trip to Boston" by Jack Ingram, "The Tortoise and the Hare" by Ethan Dysart, "My Life with Eric" by Ryan Charron, "In My Mind" by Ethan Marony, and the documentary "Everest to End Duchenne" by Fletcher Maggs which had won the top prize at the New Hampshire High School Short Film Festival (NHHSSFF) in 2022.

Course Selections for 2024-2025

In the Lucy Hurlin Theatre, school counselors review graduation requirements and present course selection information to current ConVal students. Following that information session, students are expected to review course selection information with their parents (Program of Studies, course selection sheet for their respective grade) in order to plan their course selections. The portal to select courses will be open on February 5-9 for students to make their course selections online. It is essential that students request courses in the online portal during this window. Counselors will meet with students, beginning on February 12, to finalize their course selections.

Cougars Win Unified Basketball Senior Home Game

ConVal's Unified Basketball team pulled off a huge win on senior night, beating the Sabres of Souhegan 42-22. Led in scoring by Mary Quintanilha, Mariah Woodhouse, and RJ Woodin, every player contributed to the game, playing tough defense, grabbing rebounds, and getting steals. CJ Anderson had eight steals on the night. The partners did an excellent job boxing out and grabbing boards to allow our players every opportunity to score more points. Congratulations, Unified Team!

Upcoming in Athletics and Co-Curriculars

Claws for a Cause: On February 13 the ConVal Echo will be running a charity basketball event in collaboration with students from the Souhegan Ethics Forum. This event has been designed and will be implemented by student leaders in our school community. The Echo decided that this year’s Claws for a Cause event will benefit End 68 Hours of Hunger. The event will feature a rivalry double header matchup between our girls and boys varsity programs as they take on the Sabers of Souhegan. T-shirts will be sold and opportunities to participate in events to earn prizes will create a great community atmosphere.
