A Note from Mrs. Rad - 3rd & 4th Graders
3rd & 4th Grade Parents:
We’re excited to share that our 3rd and 4th grade classes will be participating in the Team Tressel Fitness Challenge for 10 days during the month of October.
The Team Tressel Fitness Challenge is an Ohio-based initiative that encourages students and families to make physical activity a part of their daily routine. We will be working together to get moving, stay active, and build healthy habits.
We’d love to have as many of our students and families participate as possible. Whether it’s walking, running, playing outside, riding bikes, or participating in another physical activity, every bit of movement counts.
This is a great opportunity to make fitness fun while encouraging our kids to be active together.
Every student in grades 3-4 will receive a notebook to take home and keep track of their activities. Kids can track their progress over 10 days for both fitness and nutrition activities.
I will discuss the challenge with students this week in class. The most important part of this is for the kids to try their best while enjoying movement.
Let’s get our 3rd & 4th graders moving and make October a month full of activity, encouragement, and FUN!
Core Focus Areas: Students track personal goals around fitness (cardio, strength, flexibility), nutrition, sleep, and mental wellness.
Structure: Participants use workbooks to set SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) and work through Bronze, Silver, and Gold achievement levels.
Flexibility: The program is student-led and designed to be completed at home.
Community & Mentorship: The initiative pairs participating schools with "Challenge Buddies"—local business leaders, community members, and former collegiate or professional athletes—who serve as positive role models and mentors.
As always, thank you for your continued partnership in helping keep our Monterey kiddos healthy and strong!
Miss Rad

Learn More about the No-New-Millage Bond Issue 6 on Nov. 3 Ballot
On November 3, 2026, South Western City Schools will present a No-New-Millage Bond Issue on the ballot—our first since 2018. Focused on high school facility improvements for grades 9–12, this measure will not raise the district tax rate, which has remained constant since 2009.

- New High Schools: Constructing brand-new facilities for Grove City High School and Westland High School.

- Targeted Upgrades: Investing in facility and athletic enhancements for Central Crossing High School and Franklin Heights High School.
Coffee & Conversation Informational Sessions
SWCS leadership invites community members, parents, and staff to learn more about the proposed projects. Special thanks to our community partners and local businesses for hosting these events.

SAVE THE DATE: TRUNK OR TREAT
It’s almost time for Trunk or Treat, and before we open volunteer sign-ups to families, we wanted to give you a first dibs on hosting a car or volunteering!
Trunk or Treat is, without a doubt, the PTA’s biggest event of the year. It’s truly all hands on deck, and we couldn’t make it happen without volunteers!
Friday, Oct. 30 | 6:30–8 p.m.
We’re doing things a little differently this year to help limit walk-ups and keep the event just for Monterey families. Families will RSVP in advance and check in inside the school when they arrive.
We especially need a few staff members to help at the check-in table from 6:15–8 p.m.
And, of course, we’d LOVE to have teachers and staff host a trunk! The kids absolutely love seeing you at this event and the PTA provides all the candy, so you just bring the fun.

Elementary Food Allergy Safety Precautions
To protect the growing number of students with severe, life-threatening food allergies, all South-Western City School District (SWCSD) elementary schools are enforcing strict safety rules aligned with Ohio Department of Education guidelines. [1, 2]
Please note the following policies for the school day:
- No Birthday Food Treats: Cupcakes, cookies, candy, or other birthday party foods will not be accepted for classroom distribution. Please send small non-food items instead. Your child may still bring a personal special treat just for their own lunch.
- No Unrequested Food Donations: Home food donations for daytime school events are strictly prohibited unless explicitly requested by staff and approved by the principal, and must be store bought and individually packaged.
- Balloon Restrictions: Balloons or arrangements larger than a child's backpack are not permitted in school or on school buses.
After-School Events: These strict restrictions do not apply to after-school events where parents are present to monitor their own children. However, principals are partnering with PTA units to share ingredient lists in advance for seasonal events. Thank you for helping us keep our classrooms safe and inclusive for every student!
Please notify the school about any known allergies your child may possess on the student medical form so we can do our best to meet each student’s needs and keep them safe. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our school office.
Important Note - Bring ID's with you to the office
Personal Communication Devices
Personal Communication Devices: Any personal device, phone/watch/other, that distracts the learning environment must be off and in backpacks or will be placed in the front office for parent pick up, after an initial warning.
What happens if the rule is broken? - After an initial warning, devices will be placed in the front office for parent pick-up.
We appreciate your partnership in keeping distractions out of the classroom.
