Dear parents, guardians, and students,

**Every week a different Academy student will act as a student ambassador for the weekly newsletter. Their message will feature some information about the student, The Academy, and what happened throughout the week.**

Hello,

My name is Bayli Huggett, and I am a senior at The Academy. The Academy is one of the best things that has happened to me in my high school career! It has helped me a lot, and it is an amazing program. The Academy has gotten me back to where I need to be in school. It can help you get more than caught up with your classes too!

This is what we did this week:

Monday - we did not have any school due to Labor Day.

Tuesday - we worked on our personification poems and got the opportunity to present them.

Wednesday - we worked on our alliteration poems.

Thursday - we worked on our assonance poems.

Friday - we worked on imagery and metaphors.

The one thing I am looking forward to is graduating this trimester! I am very grateful for The Academy because it has helped me a lot. If I had not come into the Academy when I did, I would not even be close to graduating. My plan after I graduate is to go into the medical field because I want to help people in need. I want to be able to help as many people as possible.

English Notes by Ms. R

English students write a journal entry, practice a spelling word, and learn a new vocabulary word every day. They also practice grammar. This week students are learning the building blocks of English grammar by studying proper and common nouns and action/state of being verbs. They also studied commonly misspelled words such as a lot and accommodate. Additionally, the students learned about the root word nat which means born, so they learned words like innate and prenatal.

Additionally, students continued working on their poetry for the upcoming Poetry Slam that they will be competing in on September 23rd from 12:15 - 1:25! You are welcome to attend the Poetry Slam on the 23rd! The competition will take place in the Academy Building in room 201.

Students are also reading an independent reading book throughout the course of this trimester. This trimester they are reading dystopian novels such as: 1984 or Animal Farm by George Orwell, The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, etc . Students were able to select a book from 25+ different fiction dystopian books. The students read this book every day and write a paragraph about what they read. At the end of the trimester, they will complete a final project about the novel they selected.

If you would like to know what is coming up in Academy English, please feel free to review my trimester lesson plans. They can be found here.

Principles of Algebra and Geometry by Mr. Leonhardt

This week in Algebra and Geometry Principles we covered counting principles. Other things we have covered this week are permutations and combinations. We learned how to calculate them, and we also learned to tell the difference between the two. We have also been practicing how to solve some of the equations on Get More Math and through worksheets we get for the day.

Integrated Science by Mrs. Wheaton

We have wrapped up unit 1 and are now on to unit 2. The students had a great time with the rocket lab! Our next unit will have math involved so, if your child needs some extra help, have him or her stop in during Scooper Time!
