Attendance and Absences
DCPS is transitioning to a new system for tracking excused absences. Starting September 8th, parents and caregivers must submit excuse notes for attendance through Aspen GO—a mobile friendly version of Aspen Parent Portal, and the same platform used for school enrollment and reenrollment. Please visit the DCPS Attendance webpage for guidance on how to submit an excuse note.

English and Language Arts with Mr. Winston
We concluded this week in class by finishing our last reading for Unit 1, Raymond’s Run. Over the holiday weekend, students should finish writing their RACE(s) Paragraphs on theme that we started in class on Wednesday. These assignments are due in class on Tuesday, October 8th. Next Tuesday, we will also complete the second Skills Assessment for the unit where students will cold-read a text and respond to multiple choice and short-answer questions. Lastly, students should complete their Quill Diagnostic Assessment (instructions posted on Canvas) by Friday, October 10th .
As always, please encourage your scholars to read at least 20 minutes each night! On Tuesday, we visited the school library. This means that all scholars should have a book that they are independently reading outside of our time together in class.
World Geography and Cultures with Ms. Wesselhoft
Students finished their Community Action Letters. They have some great ideas on ways to improve their city/communities. If your student hasn’t brought an envelope and stamp yet, please have them bring it on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, students were finishing up their letters and then starting a Geography Themes packet about the Five Themes of Geography. The five themes are how geographers explore the world. If they do not finish the packet in class, they will need to finish over the LONG weekend – due Tuesday. We will then use the themes for an activity on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, students will start Unit 2: Sub-Saharan Africa and the African Diaspora. They will be completing political and physical maps, learning pertinent physical geography vocabulary (homework), and exploring thematic maps. All of that will lead to a quiz on the region. We do a quiz for each region at the beginning of every unit.
Math with Mx. Gomez
Students may submit their scratch paper for Pear homework and their respective iReady lesson(s) due on Friday when we return October 14.
6th Grade Accelerated Math
- Next week, students will take a formative assessment on Tuesday and a summative assessment on Wednesday. These are important opportunities to show what you’ve learned—let’s come prepared and ready to do our best! After assessments, we’ll begin our new unit on equivalent ratios and unit rate, which will deepen our understanding of proportional relationships. To help students get a strong start, Teacher Assigned iReady lessons are available now—please complete them to build the skills we’ll need moving forward. Let’s stay focused and keep growing!
7th Grade Math
- Next week, we’ll be working on percent problems using the proportional method, including how to find the part, whole, and percent value. These skills are essential for solving real-world problems and will be a key focus in class. To support this learning, students have iReady lessons assigned—please make sure these are completed to reinforce your understanding. Let’s keep the momentum going and aim for mastery together!

Earth and Space Science with Ms. Sagan
Hello Scientists!
Thank you for a great short week. I loved seeing you all have fun with The Great Shake Out design project. We may have had many successful buildings and some not so successful. But that’s ok because we all learned something about how serious earthquakes can be.
Next Wednesday, October 15th we will be taking our Advisory 1 Roots Summative. Blookets and study guide have been posted on Canvas. Those items can be found in the Advisory 1 Roots module. We will also have a review day on Tuesday to ensure students are prepared. This is the students first IB summative. I highly recommend that they study the roots as much as possible over the long weekend.
Also, next week, students will continue to explore plate motion using a Gizmo simulation.
Blookets
Throughout the year, I will post Blookets before every summative to help students study. Blooket is a platform that turns study flashcards into interactive mini-games in order to make studying fun! I highly recommend that students get a feel for the platform through the Roots Q1 Blooket that is posted under the Roots Q1 module. Please ensure that your students are clicking the correct link - there is a link that requires an account (for the overachievers who want to track points and collect the little icons) and a link that does not require an account (for the kids who just want to study). If your student is complaining that Blooket keeps asking them to sign in, then they're clicking the wrong link!
Notes from MLL Support
Last week we integrated ACCESS Speaking practice based on student levels and their reading materials in class. Students practiced writing and recording their answers into their computers. Students also continued with their stations with iReady on Tuesdays/Thursdays and student applications on M/W/F along with a teacher-led station.

Library Corner
Mr. Reichlen has created a new web collection of school and public library links to support the novel lists for independent reading texts from the CommonLit 360 ELA curriculum. Here students can find access points to all of the catalog records for recommended texts that support each of this year's unit themes organized by grade level and unit. Students can checkout and place items on hold. The collection will be updated throughout the school year to provide access to recommended titles as units change.
