Sentinel Snapshot

If you've never been to an SHS swim meet, you're really missing out!

Once upon a time I was a high school athlete, and then a high school coach, and let me tell you...if you want to feel proud to be a Sentinel, go check out what Coach Eastman has rolling with our swim and dive team. We must've had 40+ girls on the pool deck (which is the biggest in the league, by far) this Thursday. But more than just the competition, there is a sense of camaraderie amongst the girls which is really special. They are a spirited, inclusive, and supportive bunch. In every heat and on every lap, bunches of athletes stand and scream encouragements at the girls in the pool, regardless of which team's cap they are wearing. During the dive portion of the competition, once a diver enters the water a slow crescendo of cheers builds and ultimately climaxes right when their teammates emerge from the deep.

I used to play sports that tend to draw larger crowds, so it wasn't until I became a principal that I got to experience the joys of tennis, golf, cross country, and swim and dive. It's great fun to see our kids competing bravely while representing our school. So, if you have a free afternoon, take me up on this invitation and go check out a Steilly sport you've never seen before. A smile will be stuck onto your face all afternoon. - Jake
