Happy Monday MES Families,

I have had the privilege of reading to several groups of students this week! Thank you to your students for being great audience members when listening to stories and for being respectful to me and to other guest readers during the week! Please make sure to ask them about any new books that they read over the week, and if there were interesting ones that they heard!

During our assembly on Friday, the students were reminded of a couple of dress code concerns that we are still struggling with as a campus. The most challenging one is related to shoes. Students need to be wearing close toed shoes that they can participate in running and playing. Please do not send your child in Uggs or Crocs, as those are not as tight fitting to your child's foot. This needs to be in place every day, not just on PE days. The second conversation is around cropped tops and with the warmer weather, this has been more noticeable. Student shirts should cover the entire torso. If a student arrives at school with unsafe shoe choices or a cropped top, we will have them call home for a replacement. Please help us at home with this as your child prepares for school.

Consistent attendance is one of the most important factors in a child’s success at school. When students are present each day, they build strong routines, stay connected with their classmates, and fully engage in learning. Even a few missed days can lead to gaps in understanding and make it harder for children to feel confident in class. Thank you also for helping your child arrive at school on time and ready to learn. Your partnership makes such a meaningful difference in their growth and success!

Principal

Student Birthday Parties (from the Parent Handbook)

Such observances must be coordinated with the classroom teacher and should occur after lunch or at the end of the day. Food may be distributed at school. Healthier options should be encouraged. Cakes or very sweet treats (Sugar-based foods) are NOT allowed. All-natural popsicles are the ONLY choice for birthday celebrations. Our SMMUSD Food and Nutrition Services Wellness Policy calls for staff to limit student consumption of sugar at school. No nuts, if there is a peanut allergy in the classroom. Party favors are ok to distribute. Birthday invitations for parties away from school may not be distributed unless every student in the class is invited.
