A Note About Class Lists

Each year, our staff invests a tremendous amount of time and thoughtful consideration into creating class lists. Our goal is to build classrooms that are balanced and supportive for every child. We consider many factors, including academic needs, social and emotional needs, peer interactions, learning styles, and the unique personalities of both students and teachers.

We also make every effort to honor parents' teacher requests that are submitted by the announced deadline. This past year, the deadline was June 5 and was communicated several times through newsletters and school messages during the final months of school.

Your child's teacher is excited to welcome them and has already begun preparing for a successful year with your child in mind. I am confident that this school year will be filled with new opportunities, meaningful relationships, and tremendous growth. We can't wait to welcome everyone back to HPS!

Staying in the Loop!

If you currently have See Saw, your child's teacher will be reaching out to you that way during the first week of teacher work days. If you do not yet have See Saw, you can get signed up during Open House.

Our district has also shifted to "Parent Square" as a replacement for Remind that has been in place for a couple of years. At HPS we will continue to use See Saw as our primary form of communication, but district communication will come to you through Parent Square. You will be getting additional details from the district about this soon.

Why aren't we switching to Parent Square, too?

We use See Saw for much more than communication... we use it as a platform for student work, as well. It works really well for our age of student and allows us to communicate with you, as parents, all in one place.

We also strive to communicate via our school Facebook page for most important information.

See Saw for Communication

We use an online system called "See Saw" for day to day communication with families. Your child's teacher will provide an invitation for you to join his/her class when school begins. This is intended as a platform for parents and teachers to communicate non-emergency information about your child.

Please follow these guidelines when using See Saw:

  • Sign up as soon as possible. The app is very convenient to operate.
  • See Saw messages do NOT count as signed parent notes for absences. Those need to be sent in separately.
  • Teachers are not required/expected to respond to your questions outside of working hours. They are expected to respond to you during their daily planning period within 24 hours of your initial question.
  • Do not send early dismissal or change of dismissal plans to your child's teacher via See Saw. Please call the school office to change end of day plans.

Preparing Car Riders for Week 1

Arrival & Dismissal Information

The first week of school brings lots of excitement (and a few nervous butterflies)! To help with the transition, parents may park in the overflow lot by the outdoor classroom and walk their child into the building only during the first three school days (August 24โ€“26) if needed. We appreciate families who encourage independence whenever possible! Beginning on the fourth day of school, all students should be dropped off through the morning car line.

Morning Drop-Off

  • Car line begins at 7:28 a.m.

  • If you arrive early, please wait in line until staff begin directing traffic.

  • Only allow your child to exit the vehicle when you are at a cone with a staff member present.

  • For everyone's safety, please remain in line and do not drive around the cones or other vehicles.

  • It is most efficient to have your child seated so they can exit the vehicle from the passenger side of your vehicle.

Traffic is typically heavier during the first few weeks as students learn the routine. You can help by practicing with your child ahead of timeโ€”unbuckling independently, carrying their backpack, and having their water bottle ready. A little preparation goes a long way!

Afternoon Pick-Up

  • Please follow the same traffic pattern used during morning drop-off and do not arrive before 2:30 p.m., as early arrivals can block access for emergency vehicles.
  • Be sure to watch our Car Line Procedures Video for a helpful walkthrough of the arrival and dismissal process.

Construction Zone!

While we are super excited to see CCS growing and building new spaces for our students to learn in, we understand that construction is inconvenient to our normal operating procedures.

Traffic at HPS will follow the same pattern it has for the last few years; however, you should be aware that the traffic patterns for the rest of campus have been altered. If you have students at the other 3 schools, please be sure you are reviewing the information they have shared regarding traffic patterns in order to plan your drop off and pick up routes.

Bus Transportation

Please thoroughly communicate your child's transportation plans with his or her teacher at the beginning of the year. If you have any questions about bus transportation, please call the Clay County Schools bus garage at 828-389-8412.
  • Students are assigned one bus route and are not allowed to ride other buses to different locations with friends or family members.
  • If you need to permanently change bus routes, you must contact the bus garage.
  • Plans cannot be changed for a student after 2:15 pm in the afternoon.
  • If a child's plans change during the day from car rider to bus rider or bus rider to car rider, please call the front office at 828-389-3763. Do not rely on a See Saw message to your teacher for a change of plans.

Information for Kindergarten Families

Students entering Kindergarten are required by NC law to have completed specific immunizations. You can obtain these vaccinations from your child's primary care doctor/pediatrician or at the Clay County Health Dept.

Students entering NC public school for the first time, such as those entering Kindergarten, are also required to have an NC Health Assessment within a year of the first day of school. See below for information on the NC Health Assessment and required kindergarten immunizations.

Classroom Celebrations & Visitors

We love to celebrate our students and we love to see them making healthy choices! When classrooms have celebrations, please follow our policies and guidelines regarding food:

Each class will have a MONTHLY birthday party to celebrate all students who have birthdays in that month. A sign up sheet will be shared by your child's teacher to coordinate what is brought in for that month's party. June and July birthdays will be celebrated in May; August birthdays will be celebrated in September. Please follow the guidelines below:

  • Only packaged and/or store bought foods that specifically list all ingredients and nutrition facts (excluding fresh fruits and vegetables) be allowed for school classroom parties and celebrations.
  • Work with your child's teacher to ensure healthy food choices are offered
  • Non-food treats are always a hit!
  • Our nutrition office has provided a list of healthy food/snack ideas shown below.

Classroom Visitors:

  • If you are visiting a classroom for a specific purpose or celebration, your name MUST be on a list that has been given to the front office by your child's teacher.
  • Bringing additional guests who are not on the list is not permissible.

At HPS we implement the Ron Clark Academy House System. Schools around the world have implemented the RCA House System, a dynamic, exciting way to create a powerful and positive school climate. Students are celebrated for their efforts through a process that builds character, empowers academic excellence, fosters school spirit, enhances relationships, and promotes a culture of belonging for all.

We will have four different houses.

๐Ÿ’–Red House for Friendship

๐Ÿ’™Blue House for Dreamers

๐Ÿ’šGreen House for Courage

๐Ÿ–ค Black House for Giving

Students that have already been placed in a house will be in the same house as last year. New students and kindergarten will be placed in their house the second week of school!

Throughout the year, students will earn points for their house by exemplifying our 4 Bee Pledges: Be a Learner; Be Respectful; Be Responsible; Be Safe. We will have monthly celebrations for the house that earns the most points. Although teams are working for points for their house, they are also encouraging and cheering for their peers and classmates who are earning points as well. We are excited for this opportunity for our students and will be sending home more information about exciting events and opportunities we will be planning throughout the year!

If you would like to help us celebrate, we have created a wishlist of needed items. Thank you!
