Brown School Buzz
December 5, 2023

Dear Families,
It's hard to believe it's February already and we will be celebrating DAY 100 on Tuesday on Feb 10th. We wrapped up January with a fantastic STEAM fair, and have kicked off February with Heart Health Month and Black History Month...with Valentine's Day and February break just ahead of us. Read on to find out more about these ongoing activities at the Brown School!
Thank you for your continued support of the Brown School!
SNOW-The Struggle is Real
The sustained frigid temps and first huge snowfall in years has really created some challenges for families, particularly for the morning routines. In so many cases, it's the first time ever families have had to navigate getting kids to and from the Brown School in a timely way, while also managing traffic on ultra narrow streets, parking bans, and winter gear. What used to take 15 minutes can now take up to an hour, depending on your parking situation. We are working hard here to keep sidewalks and entry ways clear and safe. BIG SHOUT OUT to our abutting neighbors who have cleared their sidewalks to help keep our families safe. Thank you!!!
We understand everyone has had a lot on their plates managing the snow, parking and making sure kids get to school in a timely manner. We still have the bulk of folks arriving in the neighborhood between 8:04-8:10. Given the parameters of the narrow snow covered streets and fewer available parking spaces, it's not really efficient if everyone attempts to arrive within a 6 minute window.
A reminder that the front doors open at 7:50 AM, and there is typically no traffic at this time.
We sincerely appreciate your efforts to move slowly through our parking areas and be patient with one another. Thank you for working together during the most challenging traffic time of the year.
Black History Month at the Brown School!
As all of the schools in Marblehead celebrate Black History month, in ways that help all students understand our history in Marblehead ,as well as our state and nation. At the Brown School, our primary goals are to help students understand the importance of recognizing contributions of Black Americans and create an understanding of how our value of Be Brave relates to black history. We also take this opportunity to help our students learn about our school namesakes, Lucretia and Joseph Brown.
Each morning we share a quote from a historical black American figure for discussion. Some of these have included:
“He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing.” -Mohammad Ali, Professional Boxer
“I can accept failure. Everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying.” -Michael Jordan, Retired NBA Player
"Hold on to your dreams of a better life and stay committed to striving to realize it.” -Earl G. Graves, Sr, entrepreneur, publisher, businessman and advocate of african-american businesses
“The time is right to always do what is right.” -Martin Luther King Jr
"Won't it be wonderful when Black history and Native American history and Jewish history and all of U.S. history is taught from one book. Just U.S. history." Maya Angelou, writer and civil rights activist
On Friday, February 27th we will celebrate Joseph and Lucretia Brown Day! If you are interested in learning more about Lucretia and Joseph, or if you are interested in making the famous Joe frogger cookies at home, here are some links to help:

It's winter and we've got SNOW on the Playground!
Outside Recess -Be Prepared
A friendly reminder to all that we make every effort to go outside for recess whenever possible, so please send children prepared with coats, hats, mittens, snow pants and boots every day. If your child needs winter gear, please reach out to Kara Elmer, Allison Eaton or to me and we will make sure you get what you need.
The Kids Heart Challenge is On!
And the kids are CRUSHING it!!
Remember, there is NO cost to register and donations are completely voluntary. Our primary goal is to educate our students and community about healthy hearts and hands only CPR. The more students we have register, the more students will complete Finn's Mission and the safer our Marblehead community will be! CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP AT THE BROWN SCHOOL PAGE!
THE BROWN SCHOOL STEAM FAIR!
A Million Thanks!
Another successful STEAM Fair is in the books for the Brown School! We would like to extend a huge thanks to our PTO for sponsoring this event and to Susan Koelle who once again chaired this event. From registrations and ribbons to set up and clean up, Susan does an extraordinary job of keeping us all organized and supporting all our budding scientists. Thank you to all the parents who supported your children through this process. Here are just a few shots of the over 260 students participating this year! We are alreacdy looking forward to next year's event!
