Webinar Unpacking Jewish Identity, Confronting Antisemitism, and Fostering Dialogue Across Difference

This presentation explores Jewish identity and antisemitism throughout history and today, with a particular focus on the Jewish identity in American and contemporary manifestations of anti-Israel animus. Educators will be equipped with an understanding of who Jews are, their connection to the Land of Israel over time, the origins of antisemitism, and when anti-Israel animus crosses the threshold from legitimate criticism to antisemitic rhetoric. Educators will gain insight into how schools can approach these issues in more nuanced, inclusive ways, fostering a deeper understanding of Jewish history and identity. Furthermore, educators will be equipped with tools to foster brave classrooms in which antisemitism can be addressed, and challenging conversations can be constructively facilitated. Date: October 23, 2025

Time: 4:00-5:00 PM (1.0 CTLE hours)

Fee: No cost for NYS Educators

Facilitator: Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center

Using the book Bondi's Brother to teach Holocaust survivor testimony (Grade 6-12) 25 participants will receive a copy of the book. Bondi's Brother by Irving and Edward Roth is Irving's self-published testimony of his life in Hummene, Czechoslovakia, escaping to Hungary, deportation to Auschwitz, death march to Buchenwald, liberation then immigrating to America. Each chapter of Bondi's Brother has accompanying curriculum. This curriculum allows the entire book, selected parts or only one or two passages to be implemented. Students could learn Irving's story through specific passages in 6th grade, 8th grade and 10th grade. As more survivors are unable to tell their own personal stories; the importance of testimony becomes even more paramount in today's world and as a force against Holocaust denial. By teaching students to look at individuals as human beings, they will be more tolerant and accepting of others and appreciate the strength of the human spirit.

As schools increasingly recognize the value of inclusive learning environments and culturally competent instruction, the complexity of Jewish identity and history is a crucial but often unexplored element. Many Jewish families are concerned about how their children are seen and supported in educational spaces, particularly in the current climate of rising antisemitism. How can educators go beyond holidays and token references to foster meaningful inclusion of Jewish identity in their schools? What should a graduating fifth grader know and appreciate about the Jewish people? Participants will explore early identity formation, reflect on their current curriculum through a Jewish-inclusive lens, and leave with practical strategies and resources to ensure Jewish students and stories are represented, respected, and celebrated.

ENSURING READING SUCCESS: STRENGTHENING RTI/MTSS SYSTEMS THROUGH DEEPER UNDERSTANDING

Join Dr. Heidi Beverine-Curry for a dynamic three-part series designed to deepen educators’ understanding of the intersection of RTI/MTSS and the Science of Reading; what it takes to design systems that are informed by reliable data to ensure that students achieve reading success through effective instruction and intentional intervention.

Session 1 with Dr. Heidi Beverine-Curry Session 1 with Dr. Heidi Beverine-Curry

Universal Screening, Data Meetings, and Core Instruction

Date: October 7, 2025

Time: 4:00-5:30 PM (1.5 CTLE hours)

Fee: No cost for NYS Educators

Facilitator: Dr. Heidi Beverine-Curry

This opening session will clarify why we need a strong universal screener in our RTI/MTSS framework, examine the pros and cons of different types of universal screening tools, and offer practical tips for collecting universal screening data. We will discuss how to best use universal screening results in grade-level data meetings (spoiler alert – it is NOT to assign intervention tiers), and the implications for analysis of core instruction.

Dive into understanding how ORF data is an absolute goldmine and what it tells us about reading comprehension when we know how to interpret it. Learn about (and walk away with samples of) some basic diagnostic assessments that help us know where to target instruction in both core and intervention settings. How can we use a universal screening suite as a frequent progress monitoring tool for some students? Should we progress monitor on or off grade level? Let’s get into it!

Session 3 with Dr. Heidi Beverine-Curry Session 3 with Dr. Heidi Beverine-Curry

Building Systems that Sustain Literacy Growth

Date: November 4, 2025

Time: 4:00-5:30 PM (1.5 CTLE hours)
