Hawthorne's Second Annual Multicultural Night
Wednesday, February 25, 2026
Join us on February 25, 2026, at Hawthorne High School for Hawthorne’s Second Annual Multicultural Night! This year’s theme, “Strong Roots, Many Branches, One Hawthorne,” celebrates the many cultures that come together to make our school community strong and vibrant.
Across the district, Multicultural Night bulletin boards in each building highlight this theme and proudly display the flags of countries and cultures represented so far, including Taiwan, Peru, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Italy, Poland, Nicaragua, Lebanon, Puerto Rico, Germany, the Republic of Georgia, Colombia, Costa Rica, India, Jamaica, Mexico, the Netherlands, Ireland, Albania, and Newfoundland. As more families sign up, additional flags will be added to the displays.
This event is a wonderful opportunity for all schools in our community to come together, celebrate our diverse backgrounds, and learn more about one another’s traditions and heritage. Families are encouraged to participate by hosting a booth or contributing to an existing one.
Whether you are sharing your culture or attending with your family, we look forward to an evening filled with international cuisine, music, activities, and visual displays from around the world.

Celebrating Our Perseverance Award Winners
We are so proud of our amazing students who earned the Perseverance Award! Through hard work, determination, and never giving up, they showed us what it truly means to keep trying.
Mrs. Drexler and Mrs. Loaiza’s class has been hard at work practicing perseverance! Students carefully cut out and solved winter-themed tangram puzzles, challenging themselves to think critically and problem-solve. What a great way to build patience, focus, and a growth mindset!
Congratulations as well to our two incredible teachers, Mrs. Mearon and Mrs. Colella, who also received this award—thank you for being such inspiring role models!

Columbia Bank Presents to Mr. Dykstra's 8th grade Personal Finance and Career Readiness class
On Thursday, January 8, 2026, three representatives from Columbia Bank visited Mr. Dykstra’s 8th-grade Personal Finance and Career Readiness classes. All three guests have strong ties to the Hawthorne community. Angela Mattina, the Branch Manager, is a Hawthorne graduate and the parent of a current student. Bill Brex is a local resident with children in the district, and Lisa Van Der Wall is a former graduate of Hawthorne High School. During their visit, they discussed important topics such as financial literacy, budgeting, and understanding credit. This presentation built upon the foundational concepts already introduced in the classroom. The opportunity to learn from real-life professionals provided students with valuable, real-world insight and was extremely beneficial to their overall understanding.
Snowflakes
This past LMS Den Day focused on STEM activities, with students working collaboratively to create three-dimensional snowflakes. Through this hands-on experience, students were reminded that each snowflake is unique, different, and special just like every individual.

Italian Club Brings La Befana Tradition to Life at HHS
HHS Italian Club celebrated Italian culture this week with our annual La Befana Bake Sale. The bake sale featured a variety of traditional and student-made treats. La Befana is a beloved figure in Italian folklore who visits children on the night before the Epiphany, leaving sweets, candy to those who have been good and symbolizing generosity, reflection, and the close of the holiday season. Hosting this bake sale allowed students to experience the holiday in an authentic and engaging way, connecting language learning and cultural traditions to a meaningful, real-world celebration. The event was a sweet success and a fun way to bring global traditions into our school community.
