Hello Mary Hogan Families!

October is Farm to School Month in Vermont and at Mary Hogan. But what is Farm to School? Farm to School is an approach that connects classrooms, the cafeteria, and community so that students understand the world around them, know where their food comes from, make food nutrition decisions, and the interconnections in our community and farming.

At Mary Hogan, we do this in many different ways that you will see in the newsletter most weeks, including:

  • Spending time gardening
  • Delicious meals that include local products, including food from our school garden
  • Learning about local farms now and in the past
  • Making food together in classrooms
  • Math - measuring, predicting, counting when out in the garden and cooking
  • Writing about what we see in the garden, the woods, or about food stories, and more
  • Science - taking water quality samples, observing the world around us, understanding weather patterns and their impact on farming, and more
  • Visiting farms, food producers, and suppliers
  • Celebrating the Harvest of the Month on our bulletin board, at All School Meeting and Cooking with NOM
  • Fall and Spring garden and grounds work days

There are so many ways we dig into Farm to School and we are excited to keep growing this work and sharing it with you!

October Counselor's Corner

October is National Bullying Prevention Month! In this month’s Counselor’s Corner, we’re sharing what students are learning in our Bullying Prevention Unit in guidance class, along with helpful tips and resources for families to continue these conversations at home.

*Scroll through for translation in Spanish, Chinese, and Burmese.

Thank you!

Last spring, families shopping at Hannafords redeemed 104 coupons with the Hannafords Helps program. This means that we get $528 that will go to help support our Farm to School work. Part of that money will fund getting garlic that we will plant in our garden this fall (and harvest in the summer to use in the fall 2027)! Thank you for participating in this program and stay tuned for it to happen agian in the spring.

October Reading Challenge

We all have the power to make a difference in our communities. This month we are asking students to choose a book to read that shows someone helping and caring for their community. Encourage your child to read a book about community helpers and help them think about the first step that they can take! The sheet below right can be printed off to answer the challenge of the month.

Fire Safety Day

We were so lucky to have the Middlebury Fire Department visit us on Wednesday for Fire Safety Day. They helped make sure all of our students know what to do if the smoke alarm goes off, if they see a fire, and what smoke detectors do. Students enjoyed seeing all the equipment that the Fire Department uses - from the trucks to the heat sensors and their heat resistant clothing.

We are grateful for the time that they took from their day to help us learn and keep safe in the event of a fire.

Learning about Civics

The 4th grade started a new unit of inquiry this week, as the began to think about how we organize ourselves with a government and why. Students will inquire into the Vermont government, Town Meeting Day, Election Day, the 3 branches of government, and how they all work.

They also are reading a book connected with this work in their classes. This week, one class took a moment to explore a book and then talk about their predictions for what the book would be like.

Exploring the Ilsley Library

Students at Mary Hogan are taking walking field trips to the new Ilsley Library and universally everyone is impressed. The students are enjoying the different seats as well as the many awsome books. We are so lucky to have this resource in town, so I hope you can make it there on the weekends and find some good books to read together.

Music Together

Our preschoolers have been working with music educators from Middlebury Community Music Center to take part in Music Together. Music Together is a music education program for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers that helps children learn rhythm, musicality, self-control, and so much more with joy. This week, the lesson started with rhythm sticks and a call and response song. Students were working on matching the beat and remembering the phrases to repeat them back. There were a lot of smiles and some giggles as the lesson got underway.

Flexibility and Strength

Our students are strong and flexible. This week, 5th graders measure their improvement from their first rount of strength and flexibility testing (based on national standards). They really pushed themselves in the standing long jump, vertical jump, sit and reach and plank holds. Someone even did a 4 minute plank!
