MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL TAYLOR

Dear Dutch Hill Parents & Guardians:

Happy Spring!

I hope all of you had a wonderful Spring Break. In the month of March, we had some great things happen. One of the big highlights was our “Spring Into Kindergarten”, on March 1st. Students had the opportunity to take a tour of the school, get on a real school bus, and visit classrooms. Personally, this is one of my favorite activities. It is so neat to see the excitement in the eyes of the children as they learn about what it means to be an actual student at Dutch Hill.

On March 15th the PTA hosted the annual Variety/Talent Show. This event really showcased the amazing creativity and skill of our students. We had over twenty-five performances that ranged from: comedy skits, dances, gymnastics, pianists, and vocalists. Also, this assembly was extra special for students since it was the first time, we had all our students in the gym at one time since the beginning of COVID. A special thanks to Molly Ottele for the many hours she put in to making this event a success!

One other final celebration, Vihaas Goolla competed in the State-Wide Spelling Bee competition on March 26th. He represented our school and district well and took 9th place. Congratulations Vihaas!

Thank you for your support!

7th GRADE TDAP BOOSTER SHOT REQUIREMENT

All students entering 7th grade must have a Tdap shot before they can start school in September 2023.

For students in 7th grade, the Tdap vaccine must be given at or after age 10 to be accepted for school entry. If your child is in 6th grade and already received this booster, their immunizations are complete. The middle school nurse may need medical verification when this vaccine was given. If your child receives this booster over the summer, please bring the record to the nurse at registration in August 2023. It is good to keep a copy of immunizations for your records.

Please note, the Tdap shot is different from the Td shot. If your child receives the Td shot, that vaccination is not in compliance with Washington immunization requirements, and they will need to receive the Tdap shot, as well, before the first day of school.

Please remember, these immunizations are not just a good idea – they are required by Washington state law for school attendance.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT

Have you ever wondered the names of our amazing 5th, 6th and hi-cap grade level teams? These teachers are helping our kids build a love for history and math. Please help us with thanking them for all that they do.

Ms. Diem (5th grade)

  • Hello! My name is Shawn Diem. I teach 5th grade here at Dutch Hill.
  • What are some of your hobbies/interests? My hobbies are hanging out with my grandkids, camping, hiking, gardening, reading, biking, and yoga.
  • How long have you worked at Dutch Hill? I've been teaching here at Dutch Hill for 26 years.
  • What do you love about teaching 5th grade? I love teaching the 5th grade because I enjoy spending my days with 10 and 11 year olds. They are eager to learn and very curious about the world around them. I also like teaching US history, but math is definitely my favorite subject to teach.

Mrs. Huntington (6th grade)

  • Hello! My name is Janet Huntington. I have lived in Washington my entire life, other than 2 years in Missouri for college. Married for 35 + years, have four grown children. I came to teaching after my youngest child started school and have been teaching for 18 years (this year).
  • What are some of your hobbies/interests? I like to read, go for walks, and be outside. I enjoy traveling both to new places and revisit other destinations, especially where my children live. I love Disneyland.
  • How long have you worked at Dutch Hill? I have been at Dutch Hill for 6 years.
  • What do you love about teaching 6th grade? I love watching students gain confidence in themselves. Making connections with students and giving them the confidence to be the best they can, now and in the future.

Ms. Doyle (6th grade)

  • My name is Ms. Doyle and this is my fourth year teaching. I am teaching 6th grade at Dutch Hill. In prior years, I have taught 6th grade language arts and history, 7th grade and 8th grade language arts and history, and a 5th/6th grade split class last year. I student taught in third grade as well. It has been fun having so many opportunities to teach different grades! Outside of school, I am the Varsity Volleyball Coach at Snohomish High School. I had the opportunity to begin playing volleyball in sixth grade and continue playing throughout high school and college. I played volleyball in college at Walla Walla University. Throughout high school and college, I led clinics for athletes in the greater Seattle area. Following college, I became a head coach. I love being able to give back to the sport that gave me so much and inspire young athletes to reach new heights.

  • What are some of your hobbies/interests? Some of my hobbies include: buying plants, pursuing the worlds best mac and cheese (I have a list with my top five favorites ever), going to concerts, and spending time with friends and family. I am a plant enthusiast. My home is filled with over twenty-five plants…and I used to have even more. I consistently try mac and cheese everywhere I go. My favorite mac and cheese I have ever tried is the crab mac and cheese at the Black Cat in Bellingham. If you try it, let me know what you think! I enjoy listening to music, and have gone to 7 concerts so far this school year. For the past three summers I have attended the Under the Big Sky music festival in Whitefish, Montana. Last year I was not planning on going, but I won tickets. I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, and playing volleyball when I can.

  • How long have you worked at Dutch Hill? This is my first year working at Dutch Hill. I enjoy my students, the staff, and the community. I come to work with a smile on my face every day knowing that I work at such a phenomenal school. I am thrilled to be here!

  • What do you love about teaching 6th grade? I love teaching sixth grade because I love the humor, passion, and creativity my students bring. Sixth grade is a transitional year as students are preparing for middle school. I enjoy the constant jokes I hear every day and the banter I can have with students. I love the passion students bring to subject areas, and their ability to find the good and fun parts of all subjects. I enjoy the creativity my students bring into their assignments and projects, and the different ways each student sees the world. Their creativity inspires me. I aim to be creative and to teach concepts in an exciting way to help students retain information.
