Classroom Highlights
Students have been practicing their readers theater skills this month in Spartan Start. Each week we read and summarize a script, practice reading fluently and with expression, and then perform the script for others. Today, team 3 sixth graders performed Sunday Night Football: The Pittsburgh Perimeter v. The Atlanta Area. They enjoyed making connections between math and football!
During 6th grade BARR I-Time last week students learned more about their peers and teachers by creating a Shield/Coat of Arms indicating a place they would like to travel, their favorite movie, qualities they have that make them a good friend, and what they like about school. The Shields are on display in the 6th grade wing at SMS. *BARR stands for Building Assets, Reducing Risks.
World Mental Health Day
World mental health day is on October 10th each year. It is an international day for global
mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma. Taking care of our
brains is SO important as mental illness is not at all uncommon. In fact, 20% of youth ages
13-18 live with a mental health condition and half of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by
age 14. Mental illness is also ranked as the most stigmatized illness. Four out of five people
think it’s harder to admit to having a mental illness than any other illness and 50% of children
ages 8-15 who are experiencing a mental illness don’t receive treatment. There are things we all
can do to support our own mental health. Consider what strategies you are already using, and
others you might want to try, to help improve your mental well-being! Mental health resources HERE
Healthy Minute
DRINKING ENOUGH WATER!
Hydration is often an overlooked but very important part of EVERY person’s success throughout a day. It helps improve concentration, memory, performance in classrooms and sports, and generally feeling your best. The health office sees a ton of students that have headaches, dizziness, fatigue, etc. and oftentimes kids don't have a water bottle or haven’t drank enough (or any) water in their school day. The health office staff encourages all kids to have a water bottle on hand or in their locker; one or two drinks at a water fountain is not enough to keep you sharp and focused throughout the day. Aim for 6-8 cups of water each day. Also, many fruits and vegetables have a naturally higher amount of water content which is a bonus for hydration and incorporating more fruits and vegetables into your balanced meals. To sum it up: drink more water!! It’s good for your health :)
Attendance Matters!
Class starts each day with students in classrooms by 7:55am. The warning bell rings at 7:50am. To see if your child has been tardy to any of their classes, check PowerSchool to view your child’s attendance. If you see any errors, please contact Ms. Charity.
**Our school day ends at 3:06pm. Unless your student is registered for an after school activity, they must leave the building by 3:30pm.**
