Celebrating 30 years at Capital High School!
Mrs. Jennifer Garcia
Jennifer Garcia, a mother of three wonderful children and a grandmother of four amazing grandchildren has been an employee at Capital High School for 30 years. Ms. Garcia is the Principal's Administrative Assistant and her knowledge and experience makes Capital the amazing school that it is! Ms. Garcia is well-loved by staff, students, and parents. Her dedication to Capital High School is invaluable. Ms. Garcia stated, "I wake up every morning blessed to go to work. I have enjoyed seeing the excitement of our students and staff on good days and been blessed to support our students and staff on bad days. I’m excited to be able to continue to see the growth of our school through new eyes." Thank you Ms. Garcia for your many years devoted to Capital High School and the community!
Mr. Ben Gomez
Mr. Gomez has been at Capital High School for 30 years! Gomez has taught Health and P.E. at Capital and has been coaching Boys Varsity Basketball for 30 years. Mr. Gomez is our current Dean of Students, working with students and supporting teachers with discipline and restorative justice practices. Mr. Gomez stated, "Interacting with students and staff has always been a pleasure because the stigma of Capital High School is that CHS has rough, tough, undisciplined students and I believe that our students are bright, kind, respectful and hard-working". Thank you Mr. Gomez for your many years of dedicated service to our Capital High School students, staff, and community!

Did you know Capital High School is an AVID Demonstration School?
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. At CHS, it is a year-long class that helps students get ready for college and life after high school. AVID focuses on smart skills such as note-taking, organization, tutorials, and collaboration that make tough classes like AP or dual credit easier to handle. Students also practice public speaking, teamwork, and explore college and career options through field trips and guest speakers. At CHS, students stay with the same AVID Elective Teacher for all four years which is super helpful when it comes time to have a strong and positive recommendation letter for scholarships.
What does AVID mean for CHS?
Being an AVID school means CHS uses AVID strategies, such as WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading), in all classes, not just the AVID elective. AVID students keep their GPA at 2.5 or higher and push themselves toward A’s, B’s, and C’s, with support from peers and teachers. Since 2004, more than 4,000 Jaguars have graduated through AVID, earning scholarships like Questbridge, Daniels, Dell, and Regents, and heading to colleges, trade schools, or the military. Even if you are not in AVID, you benefit. Teachers use AVID strategies schoolwide, which means clearer lessons, stronger study skills, and a culture where aiming for college and careers is the norm.

The State Seal of Bilingualism-Biliteracy (SSBB) is an award given by a school district or charter school in recognition of students who, by high school graduation, demonstrate proficiency in a language other than English. The SSBB emblem is placed on the graduating senior's diploma of excellence (including a notation on the transcript). It also encourages the pursuing of bilingualism-biliteracy, honoring of skills attained from school, family or community, and can be evidence of skills that are attractive to future employers and college admissions offices

Class of 2026 Senior Information
- Campus Specialities: On September 17 we will have a senior assembly during advisory. At this time, the representative from Campus Specialties will be here to present information about ordering your cap and gown, senior ring, graduation announcements, etc. Please know that in order to participate in graduation you MUST have a cap and gown.
- Bilingual Seal Informational Meeting: Ms. Vigil will host an informational meeting on October 8, during advisory in the cafetorium. If you are interested in graduating with the bilingual seal, please go to the cafetorium when we make the announcement
- College Application Drive: October 9th we will host numerous colleges and universities so that you can apply for these schools for free, and in-person, on 10/24. Please be on the lookout for more details. We want all students to apply to at least three colleges on this day - applying does not mean you have to attend, it is a way to keep your options open for life after high school.
- Grades: Remember that passing your classes should be the lowest goal that you have set for grades. Colleges and universities look at your overall grade point average so work your hardest to get the best grades that you can!
- Credits: If you are working on making up credits, please try to get caught up by the end of this semester. This might not be realistic for everyone, but if you can get caught up now, you can enjoy the second semester a whole lot more. Prescriptive testing is being phased out and by January there will no longer be prescriptive testing so PLEASE work hard in your E2020 classes or sign up for Twilight School.
