A Message From The Superintendent A Message From The Superintendent

Congratulations to WPS's 2027 Teacher of the Year SHELLY RINAS!

Dear Weston Education Community,

I am delighted to share that Mrs. Shelly Rinas has been selected as Weston Public Schools' 2027 Teacher of the Year!

Shelly is an extraordinary educator whose vision, creativity, and commitment to students have transformed the Weston Intermediate School Learning Commons into the heart of the school, a place where students read, create, innovate, collaborate, and discover the joy of learning. Through her leadership, she has cultivated authentic opportunities for students to find their voices, pursue their passions, and see themselves as leaders.

Shelly's passion for learning, belief in every child, and dedication to creating meaningful experiences embody the very best of Weston Public Schools. We are incredibly fortunate to have her as a member of our educational community.

I am especially excited to celebrate Shelly this December at the Connecticut Teacher of the Year Celebration at The Bushnell, where district Teachers of the Year from across Connecticut will be honored and the 2027 Connecticut Teacher of the Year will be announced. It will be a privilege to celebrate this well-deserved recognition alongside educators from across our state.

Please join me in congratulating Mrs. Shelly Rinas on this incredible honor!

In partnership,

Erica

HURLBUTT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

As we close out another school year we reflect on all that we have achieved and begin planning for the 26-27 year. We are excited to welcome in a new group of kindergarteners who will start their journey through the Weston Schools with us. We are so proud of the growth and achievements of our students this year. We exceeded our school goals with 98% of students in kindergarten through second grade meeting or exceeding benchmark expectations in reading on the Dibels assessment. In math 98% of students met or exceeded grade level expectations on the NWEA math assessment indicating strong growth and achievement across the school. We also had increases in all of the school climate surveys and 91% of our students reported they had an adult they could go to if something was bothering them, exceeding our goal. We continue to shine a spotlight on all students and their growth and remind them….Be Safe, Be Kind and Be Responsible everywhere you go this summer.

WESTON INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL

WIS recently celebrated our fifth graders as they completed their elementary school journey and prepared for the exciting transition to Weston Middle School. Surrounded by proud families, staff, and friends, students were recognized not only for their accomplishments at WIS, but also for their unique passions, interests, and contributions that make each member of the Class of 2026 special.

A highlight of the ceremony was our final class performance. Fifth grader, Ever Kingsley, accompanied the class on guitar, adding a memorable touch to the celebration. In a wonderful example of student voice in action, Max Plotkin made a last-minute request to begin the ceremony with our beloved school song. Proudly leading his classmates, Max kicked off the celebration with the familiar call-and-response: "When I say WIS, you say is the best!" Thanks to the flexibility and dedication of our staff, the request quickly became reality, delighting students and families alike and creating a joyful, spirited opening to the event.

We were also honored to welcome Principal Bluestein, who joined us to officially greet our students as future members of Weston Middle School. His presence reflected the strong partnership that exists along School Road and the shared commitment to supporting students through each stage of their educational journey.

The Moving Up Ceremony was a wonderful celebration of student achievement, community, and the bright futures that lie ahead for our fifth graders. We are incredibly proud of the Class of 2026 and look forward to all they will accomplish in the years to come.

WESTON MIDDLE SCHOOL

Weston Middle School is finishing the 2025-2026 school year with a number of enriching, fun, and important events for our school culture and community. Students recently participated in Warrior Day - a team based event that builds school spirit, encourages healthy competition, and allows students to engage in a number of physical (and mental) activities that celebrate their teams as well as our overall school. It’s an exciting and fast paced day that also includes a pep rally, a picnic lunch, hallway decorating, and team chants.

We also recently welcomed our next class of sixth graders during their orientation and tour of our school. We started with a whole school meeting where we reviewed important pieces of information about transitioning to middle school. The tour included a scavenger hunt quiz and was led by eighth grade student tour guides.

Finally we are really proud as a school to earn our No Place for Hate banner. This is a result of successfully completing three school based activities meant to combat hate and promote community and safety. Every student signed a pledge - where they committed to combating any hate based language or acts. The topics of our three activities this year were identity and icebergs, the intent and impact of our words, and being an upstander. We are excited to build on this work for next year. The power of our work this year was that it was planned and led by our students.

WHS Athletics Spotlight

We ended the spring season on a high note with tremendous success both on and off the field. Our Boys Lacrosse team captured the Class M State Championship, defeating New Fairfield by a score of 11-10. Girls Tennis finished as the Class M State Runner-Up, while Boys Tennis advanced to the Class M Semifinals. Baseball and Softball both earned berths in the Class M State Tournament First Round, and Girls Lacrosse advanced to the Class M Quarterfinals.

Our track and field athletes also had an outstanding postseason. For the boys, Alex Wiese won the Class M State Championship in the javelin and later placed 3rd at the State Open. Nate Cassol earned a 2nd place finish in the shot put, and Nick Jandrucko finished 3rd in the shot put.

The girls also had an impressive showing at the State Championships and New Englands. Abby Winslow captured the Class M State Championship in the 800 meters, while Lexi Banks placed 2nd in the javelin before going on to place 6th at the New England Championship in the event. Hadley Grace earned a 3rd place finish in the pole vault and was also part of the 4x800 relay team that finished 3rd alongside Isabella Fournier, Maisie Rosengarten, and Abby Winslow.

We also had the privilege of celebrating 13 senior student-athletes who will continue their academic and athletic careers at the collegiate level. Congratulations to all of our student-athletes and coaches on an exceptional spring season and for representing Weston with pride and excellence.
