Dear Hawk Families,

Welcome to a new school year! We hope you have enjoyed a wonderful summer, and we are excited to welcome both new and returning students back to our school community.

One of the things that makes our school special is the strong connection we share with our families. As students navigate the middle school years and grow in independence, that partnership between home and school becomes more important than ever. We look forward to working together to support every student's success.

As we prepare for Open House, please take time to carefully review the Back-to-School Newsletter. It contains important information about schedules, procedures, communication, and other details that will help your child have a smooth and successful start to the year. Many of the questions families have at the beginning of the year are answered here, and being familiar with the information will help everyone feel confident and ready for day one.

We are grateful to be part of such a caring and connected community and can't wait to see our students walk through the doors again. Here's to a fantastic school year filled with growth, learning, and memorable experiences!

Sincerely,

Jennifer Cassidy, Principal

Student Class Schedules Student Class Schedules

Families may view student class schedules in the Infinite Campus Parent or Student Portal beginning July 27. Schedule change request forms will be available in the front office; please review carefully the criteria below for requesting a schedule change.

  • We do not accept schedule change request based on teacher preferences or peer preferences.
  • Connections classes are scheduled by the student's date of birth. These classes are intended to be exploratory, and students will rotate through our varied connections courses during middle school.
  • All 6th grade students will take a Career Exploration course in addition to their two connections courses.
  • Generally, we are unable to accommodate requests for connections courses unless for the reasons for noted below.

Request a change to Academic/Core Content classes if:

  • Incorrect level on schedule (on, advanced, accelerated)
  • Incorrect Reading/World Language placement

Request a change to Connections (Electives) if:

  • 6th grade students who did not previously sign up for band, chorus, or orchestra and would like to enroll now.
  • A requested year-long course is not on the schedule (band, chorus, orchestra, AVID students only).

Bell Schedule Bell Schedule

We operate on a modified block schedule. Students attend all classes on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays (A Day) for 45 minutes each. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, students attend only four classes but for an extended period of 80 minutes each.

4th period Flex is daily. Students rotate between lunch, recess, and time for The FCS Student Success Skills curriculum and/or academic practice. See the specific times for each grade level below.

On Wednesdays, we have an extra class (9th period) which is designed to foster engagement and academic growth. Students will be introduced to organizational skills, advisement lessons, goal setting and reflection strategies, and personalized independent practice of academic skills. We also use this period for required assessments such as iReady and other special learning activities.

Student Cell Phones/Personal Devices Student Cell Phones/Personal Devices

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

Students in grades K through 8 will not be allowed to use personal electronic devices during the school day.

Personal Electronic Device includes any personal portable electronic device capable of transmitting, receiving, or accessing communications, data, or media, including but not limited to:

personal laptops, smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, smart glasses, e-readers, headphones, and other devices with functionalities such as wireless communication, internet access, messaging, video recording, gaming, social media access, or data transmission.

One of the biggest distractions from learning that we must address daily is student cell phones. Please review the district guidelines below and talk to your child about the consequences of misusing a cell phone while at school. We will be strictly enforcing these expectations and will confiscate phones/devices as necessary. Parents will be required to pick up confiscated phones/devices during office hours, 8:15 am - 4:15 pm. We will not return the item to your student at the end of the school day.

We strongly recommend that students leave cell phones at home. If it is necessary for your student to bring the phone to school, it is your child's responsibility to keep it secure during the school day. The school is not responsible for the loss or damage of students' personal devices while at school.

Key Cell Phone Details:

  • Students in grades K-8 are prohibited from accessing personal electronic devices during the school day. The school day begins when the student arrives at school until the student is dismissed from school at the end of the day.
  • This includes all scheduled instructional time, recess, lunch, transitions, and non-instructional activities.
  • Accessing the phone/device includes viewing, holding, wearing, or using a personal electronic device for communication, digital content, internet connection, gaming, recording, listening to music, or any other function.
  • Students may never use their phones take photos or videos while on school property without permission from the administration.
  • We have phones available for student use in the case of emergency during the school day. Parents who have an urgent need to communicate with their child may call the front office. Please limit these requests to emergency situations.

Per the FCS Student Code of Conduct

Rule 18f.II Prohibited Use of Personal Communication Devices (PCD's) During the School Day:

  • Possession of Personal Communication Devices (PCD) (e.g., cell phones, tablets, recording devices) by a student at school during school hours is a privilege that will be forfeited if a student fails to abide by the Student Code of Conduct.

Rule 18g.III Inappropriate Recording and Distribution Using Personal Communication Devices (PCD):

  • The use of cell phones and other PCDs for noneducational purposes, including but not limited to, recording staff and/or students without permission or other inappropriate content is strictly prohibited.
  • In addition, using a cell phone or other personal communication device to record a fight, battery, or any other inappropriate content and either sharing with others (e.g., airdrop, nearby share, ShareIT, etc.) and/or uploading the video to any other type of social media/web- based media is also strictly prohibited.
  • Consequences for doing so may result in up to a 10 Day suspension and a referral for a discipline hearing with a recommendation for long term suspension.

Student Device (Laptop) Information Student Device (Laptop) Information

FCS teachers and students use a variety of digital resources to enhance learning in the classroom, including Microsoft Office, ClassLink, Canvas, digital textbooks, and many other resources and study tools. Students will be issued a laptop for academic use during the school year. Students are expected to abide by the device user agreement while the laptop is issued to them. Please take time to read the FCS Student & Parent Device Handbook for important information. For Spanish, please see the attached PDF.

Laptops will be issued to students August 7-11 during the school day.

8th Grade - Friday, August 7

7th Grade - Monday, August 10

6th Grade - Tuesday, August 11

The parent/guardian is responsible for the cost of repair or replacement if a device or its accessories are damaged, not returned, lost, or stolen. The district provides parents/guardians the opportunity to purchase the optional device protection plan to limit the out-of-pocket cost to repair or replace damaged devices. The details of this can be found in the Optional Device Protection Plan portion of the FCS Student & Parent Device Handbook (pg. 10). Parents may enroll in Optional Device Protection Plan when you complete the Online Census Verification in the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. See the section below for more details on accessing the Online Census Verification.

Verify Household and Emergency Contact Information Verify Household and Emergency Contact Information

All families are required to log in to the Infinite Campus Parent Portal and verify emergency contacts and household information. This ensures that schools can contact you quickly and appropriately in case of an emergency. Each student must have at least one emergency contact who is not a parent or guardian.

To begin the verification process, click here. You will also be able to opt in to the device (laptop) protection plan during this process.

NO Locker Sales This Year NO Locker Sales This Year

Hall lockers will be NOT available to rent for this school year. Students may carry a backpack throughout the school day, which eliminates the need for renting a locker this year. A case for the school-issued laptop is also provided and expected to be used. The case includes a pocket for the charger, and space for earbuds and other small classroom supplies.

While our 6th grade students see a locker as a middle school "rite of passage", this enthusiasm generally wears off after a few weeks and lockers go unused. Few of our 7th and 8th grade students use a locker. As a result, the cost of annual maintenance is higher than the locker fees we collect.

We will consider requests for a locker on a case-by-case basis, and only for extenuating circumstances. Please contact Principal Cassidy if you believe that this applies to your child.

School Breakfast/Lunch Accounts School Breakfast/Lunch Accounts

User uploaded image

If you would like your child to have money on his/her account for breakfast, lunch, and/or snack purchases, visit My School Bucks to set up your account. Parents may also elect to limit extra snack purchases with the money on the account.

Cafeteria meal charges are not allowed in middle/high school. Students with a zero balance on their account may be given a courtesy meal. Breakfast - cheese toast/milk; lunch - cheese sandwich/milk.

We will have laptops available during Open House on July 30 for families who wish to apply for Free/Reduced meals and need access to a computer. The online application has a faster processing time. We encourage families to apply online!

A new Free/Reduced meal application must be completed every school year. Only one application is required per family, even if your children attend different schools. If there is an interruption in benefits or the household does not reapply, the household is responsible for payment of meals until the Free and Reduced Application is approved. Visit https://www2.myschoolapps.com/

to begin the online application process. Free and Reduced meal applications will be available beginning July 25.

Students who qualified for Free/Reduced meals last school year will continue eligibility through September 14. After this date, parents must pay for meals until a new application is submitted and approved for the current school year.

Households that qualify for reduced meals will not be required to pay the reduced price due to GaDOE funding that will be used to cover these costs.

2026-27 Meal Prices

Middle School Student Breakfast = $1.85

Middle School Student Lunch = $3.35

Middle School Student Premium Lunch $3.85 (these items will be noted on published menus)

Extra Milk = $0.75

Adult Lunch = $5.25

Menus and additional meal service information available on the FCS Nutrition Website.

Deliveries for Students During the School Day Deliveries for Students During the School Day

We understand that sometimes students forget an item or a parent wishes to drop off lunch. We do not interrupt instruction for forgotten items.

· Items should be placed on the table just inside the front door (not at the front office desk).

· Items should be clearly marked with the student’s first and last name (paper will be provided).

· If your student calls/emails you for an item, please remind them to periodically check the item pick up table.

· Students will NOT be called out of class, nor will the class be interrupted to deliver food or personal items (exceptions for glasses/medication).

· Students are not permitted to wait for a delivery to be made.

· Students can pick up their item(s) between classes or during the lunch period but are still responsible for getting to class on time (no passes will be issued for tardies).

· Students are not allowed to order DoorDash, UberEats, Instacart, or any other food delivery during school hours. Parents may send/bring lunch for their own child, but it must be eaten during the student's designated lunch period.

We know there are occasional emergencies, and we will work with those on an individual basis. If a student forgets their lunch, they just need to let an adult know and our administration will assist.

Student Dress Code Student Dress Code

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

All students will be dressed appropriately and ready for instruction for the day. We have established a flexible dress code that can prepare students for future professional expectations by teaching them about appropriate dress and grooming standards. Requiring students to dress appropriately for school instills a sense of responsibility, which can help students develop the skills and habits they need to succeed in the workplace. At this stage in life, school is a child's job, and we want them to dress for success!

All Clothing

  • Clothing that depicts gangs, alcohol, drugs, profane language, weapons, or violence may not be worn.
  • Blankets are not permitted to be carried and/or worn during the school day.

Tops

  • Undergarments, including bras, must be covered by tops and tank top straps at all times.

Bottoms
  • Pants and shorts must be worn at or above the hips and may not sag.
  • Underwear may not be visible, and buttocks must be fully covered while standing, sitting, and walking

Hats and Hoods:

  • Hats and hoods are permitted if they meet the "all clothing" requirements.
  • Teachers may request hats or hoods be removed during class time.

Parents may be called to bring a change of clothing, if necessary. Students without a change of clothing or whose parent cannot bring a change of clothing may be offered a change of clothing from our school supply. Students who refuse to comply with dress code expectations will be assigned to ISS for the day.

The school dress code applies to all school activities unless otherwise noted.

Bus Stop Information Bus Stop Information

Updated bus stop information for the school year is now available. Parents and students can search for bus stop locations and times at the FCS Transportation website using the Edulog system.

Bus behavior expectations: All FCS Student Code of Conduct rules apply on school-provided transportation and at school bus stops. Students are expected to comply with bus driver directions and may not disrupt the environment of the bus or bus stop in any manner. Safety is the priority on the bus!

Did you know that all FCS buses have a GPS tracker? "Here Comes the Bus" is a free, easy-to-use website and app that enables you to see the location of your child’s school bus on a smartphone, tablet, or personal computer. This way, you know when the bus is near your stop, so you can send your child out at just the right time. No more worrying about whether your child has missed the bus! See the Transportation website for more details.

School Clinic/ Medication Information School Clinic/ Medication Information

Does your child have a medical condition, allergies, or need to take medication during the school day? Our school clinic can assist with care plans and medication management. Forms are required to be updated and on file annually in order for students to take medication at school.

Prescription medication: requires a doctor to fill out and sign a portion of the form.

Over the counter medication requires a parent signature on the form (for example, Advil, Tylenol, Benadryl, Cold/Allergy medication, etc.). Parents must provide the medication to the clinic.

Stop by the clinic during Open House to pick up forms that are required for medication to be given or carried at school.
