Glenwood
This Week's Scouting Report
Thursday April 9, 2026
Good afternoon, Glenwood families,
I hope everyone had a chance to relax and recharge over spring break. It was great to welcome students back this week and feel the energy return to the building. After a quiet week in the building, the volume definitely picked back up quickly!
As we move into the final stretch of the school year, we are looking forward to a strong and productive few months ahead. We all know this part of the year tends to move fast. There are many exciting activities, important learning opportunities, PSSA testing, and a full calendar of end-of-year events coming up.
Thank you for your continued support. Let’s finish the year strong, with just the right amount of energy and just enough coffee to get us there. Please see all the Happenings below.
Best,
Josh Rehak, Principal
Tomorrow: Wear Glenwood GREEN!

First Grade News
First graders reviewed math and science standards such as telling time to the hour and half hour and investigating what it takes to make a stationary object's shadow move. In ELA, students are learning parts of speech such as nouns, verbs, and now adjectives by using their 5 senses to record adjectives to describe popcorn- yellow, salty, and crunchy! First graders are preparing for Special Friends Day by practicing their "How To Babysit a Special Friend" Reader's Theater. Students in Miss Atkinson's had a guest reader teach them about Ramadan and Eid.
Poem in your Pocket
We are excited to announce that the 16th Annual Poem in Your Pocket (PIYP) will take place Friday, April 24 and Saturday, April 25 in celebration of National Poetry Month. This community event is organized each April by our teacher-librarians.
PIYP gives students and community members the opportunity to share a short poem at participating local businesses in exchange for a small treat generously provided by those businesses. The event is inclusive and flexible—students choose their own poem, practice it, and decide which businesses they would like to visit. A list of participating businesses and additional details will be shared closer to the event. Thank you for supporting this special community event.
Cereal and Kindness Chain Reaction
Glenwood students have big hearts, and we’re ready to make a big impact! Help us knock down hunger by donating boxes of cereal to Glenwood Elementary School’s Cereal and Kindness Chain Reaction. Our goal is to collect 1,400 boxes of cereal to donate to local food banks. Each box represents an act of kindness that will help families in our community. To celebrate reaching our goal, we will create a giant domino chain with the cereal boxes and knock them down so our students can watch a powerful chain reaction of kindness in action! You can help by sending in unopened boxes of cereal with your child. If it’s easier, you can also ship cereal boxes directly to the school through this Amazon link. Together, let’s start a chain reaction of kindness and help knock down hunger!
Glenwood Spotlight
JUST LIKE THE CHARACTERS
Each week we will highlight anyone who has exemplified qualities similar to our Philly mascots, possessing the following:
GRITTY (Flyers Ice Hockey) Resilient with a ‘never give up’ attitude
FRANKLIN (76er's Basketball): Loyal friend
SWOOP (Eagles Football): Strong and determined
LOYAL FRIENDS
Today Penncrest Science National Honor Society (SNHS) members visited Glenwood to share a lesson about DENSITY. They posed the question: What happens when we pour the different liquids (water, oil, and dish soap) together? Glenwood students were asked to draw their hypothesis, which was tested by our Penncrest visitors using the necessary supplies. Later they discussed the experiment, the results, and the conclusion. Our students enjoyed hearing from the Penncrest 'science experts'!
These fellow scholars have proven to be LOYAL FRIENDS to our elementary students by taking the time to come to our school and teach them a fun and interesting lesson.
LOYAL FRIEND
During lunch, when one of Avery's classmates needed to visit the nurse, Avery jumped right in to help. Noticing he hadn’t returned by the time to pack up, she gathered their items and set them aside for him. Avery’s loyalty and thoughtfulness reflect the spirit of our Sixers mascot, Franklin. Great job, Avery!
