Principal Corner

Hello AES families,

February is well underway and many of our classes made predictions if the groundhog would see his shadow. Punxsutawney Phil has predicted an early spring, as have our Kindergarteners, so they must both be right!

There has been a wonderful response to the Books and Cooks reflection survey. It is not too late to fill this out. Your feedback in incredible important to us all and to the planning process for our next events.

Valentine's Day is right around the corner. At AES, each classroom traditionally holds their own events for that day. Please look for a communication over the upcoming week from your child's classroom teacher regarding any celebrations for the 14th of February.

Crazy 8's - If you have not completed the permission slips for Crazy 8s and would like to have your child in grades K-4 participate, do so now. Students are excited for Crazy 8s beginning! The PTO is sponsoring the 8 week program, Wednesday afternoons from 3:30 - 4:30, beginning February 21st. The club is free!

There will be two separate multi-age groups with different activities each week, grades K-2 and 3-4. Sign-up sheets are attached to this newsletter below and have been sent home in hard copy from classroom teachers. Please sign and return the forms as soon as possible so we know how many groups of students will need to prepare. If you need another hard copy form, please call the main office or contact your child's classroom teacher. All students K-4 are welcome to attend free of charge, they just need transportation home at 4:30. Please don't forget carpooling is always an option between friends!

Deliberative Session - Tuesday, February 6th -

Deliberative Session (District Meeting Part I) @ CVHS Gym 6:00 pm with a snow date of Wednesday, February 7th.

Kindness Week is coming!

While we all know that kindness is important to practice daily, February brings with it the annual Kindness Week at Antrim Elementary School and National Random Acts of Kindness Day. Beginning February 12th through February 16th, students and staff will be celebrating by committing random acts of kindness the week leading up to National Random Acts of Kindness Day on Friday, February 17th. We will be gathering together on Random Acts of Kindness Day with an earned activity and a schoolwide community meeting. We encourage everyone in the Antrim Community to join in by committing random acts of kindness with your family, friends, and community.

AES Facebook Page - Follow us on Facebook for up to the minute details and pictures of our day.

Be well,

Beth

First Friends 1 and 2 - Our Harris Center naturalist came in for a visit this week. The students learned all about squirrels. Kara brought in squirrel mounts so the children could look at two kinds of squirrels that live nearby. First Friends were also able to see and touch various parts (skulls, tails, acorns, pinecone skeletons, track molds). The children loved going outside to pretend to be squirrels by making noises, digging for food, jumping and balancing like a squirrel.

Kindergarten Kindergarten

This week, Ms. Lawler’s Kindergarten class has been reading, writing, drawing, and learning about groundhogs! We worked on sequencing the story Go to Sleep, Groundhog! and we did some writing and drawing about what animal would make a good substitute groundhog. We were also excited to make predictions about whether or not the groundhog would see its shadow. 9 of thought it would be an early Spring and 4 of us thought it would be 6 more weeks of Winter. We were even more excited to find out this morning that indeed the groundhog predicted an early Spring, though the snow that still covers the playground tells a different story.

On Friday, Ms. Dibble’s class learned about Groundhog Day and make a prediction about whether or not the groundhog would see his shadow. We made a whole class graph with our predictions and wrote what our predictions were. At the end of the day, we found out that we would have an early spring and celebrated by making headbands!

Grade 1 Grade 1

First graders in Mrs.DiFolco’s class celebrated Groundhog Day today with poetry and puppet making! We watched a video and learned that groundhog Phil did NOT see his shadow, so hopefully it will be an early spring! Also, the students learned many facts about groundhogs from a non-fiction book! HAPPY GROUNDHOG DAY!

Grade 2 Grade 2

The second graders have been very busy this week! In math, we continued learning about two dimensional shapes and how to split them up evenly into halves, thirds, and fourths. We just began naming those parts as fractional units! Yay!

In literacy, we learned about R-Controlled vowels which we like to call… Bossy R’s!

Huge congrats to our second graders for filling our classroom core value jar and earning a reward… watching a movie with stuffed animals! Way to go second grade!!

Grade 3 Grade 3

Third graders were excited to share their learning with families this week at our Books & Cooks event. Students have been working on their reading fluency by working in groups on four different reader’s theater scripts including “The BFG”, “Whales”, “The Friendly Dragon” and “Jack & The Beanstalk”. We also had a great time making crockpot ziti for the big event. We learned to read a recipe, crack eggs carefully, measure ingredients and layer ingredients in the crockpot. It was delicious, and lots of fun!

Grade 4 Grade 4

Fourth graders in Mrs. Beaumont’s class have begun researching attractions in the 7 regions of New Hampshire with a goal of planning a road trip for a celebrity who has chosen to visit! Students have enjoyed learning how to use internet resources and road maps to plan a road trip! Ask them about their plans!

In classroom lessons this week the kindergarten students are finishing the unit on kindness, reviewing kind things they can do at school and home, such as asking if someone is okay, asking if someone wants a hug, offering to share, offering to help. The older students–Grades 1 through 4– are beginning a series of lessons on bullying prevention, focused on the “Three R’s”--Recognize, Report, Refuse..
