INFLUENCE
Dear AMS F-A-M-I-L-Y (Students, Parents/Guardians & Staffulty),
I hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend, the unofficial end of summer. With the shorter week we had to jam 5 days of difference making into 4! Labor Day was established as a national holiday by President Grover Cleveland in 1894 during the Pullman railroad strike to appease labor unions fighting for better working conditions, increased pay and shorter hours. Our 3-day weekend was influenced by the Pullman strike and 19th century labor movement activists wanting acknowledgement for American workers' economic and social contributions. So my comments this week will center on the profound power of our influence.
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines influence as, “The power or capacity of causing an effect in indirect or intangible ways.” Every day, in countless interactions at AMS we foster curiosity, shape minds, and build character. Our words, actions, and dedication resonate beyond the classroom walls, to our outdoor education program, influencing not just academic achievement and growth, but also the confidence, resilience, and aspirations of our students. We should never underestimate the immense, positive or negative ripple effects of our influence. Every conversation we have is an opportunity to influence, to move the needle, and make AMS better - the AMS Difference. Whether you are a student, parent, or staffulty, you have influence. Whether you have position power, or people power, you have influence. Your children, our students, are watching us adults for cues. They are being influenced by their siblings and peers too. Thank you for wielding your power of influence with care and commitment. It can change lives. I believe that.
Thanks AMS F-A-M-I-L-Y (Forget About Me I Love You) for being positive influencers, for being great. Enjoy this 2-day weekend, and let's get after it again next week, for a full 5 days. GO SKIERS!
Shine on,
Dr. Tom

Aspen High School Football Friday Night Lights!
It is great to see our high school athletes in action this year. Skier Football will host Steamboat Springs tomorrow night at 7:00pm on the turf.
REMINDER, all middle school students must pay admission of $6.00 and have a parent chaperone at the game with them. This is for the safety and quality of the sporting experience for all.
Students & Parents can purchase tickets using there phone or pay at the gate.
Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) & School Accountability Committee (SAC)
We’re still recruiting Very Important Parents (VIPs) to join our PTO! We’ve got big plans, REALLY BIG PLANS, so if you're ready to play big, just email our principal, Dr. Tom (tdodd@aspenk12.net), and he’ll bring you into the circle of trust!
School Accountability Committee (SAC):
The SAC is another great way for parents to plug into AMS, but it has a different purpose and composition than the PTO. Dr. Tom Dodd is soliciting volunteers for that group too, so send him an email (tdodd@aspenk12.net) and you’ll get an invite to the first meeting to be scheduled in the next month or so!
Lunch Information
Every week the AMS Lunchroom is looking for volunteers to support our staff by volunteering from 11:40am - 12:30pm on Mondays - Fridays. Please sign up for a volunteer shift HERE!

Important Information
Looking for a fun and purposeful summer opportunity for your middle schooler? We are trying to plan a 10-day STEM oriented trip to South Korea and Tokyo sometime between May 30th- June 16th 2026 through EF Tours and we want to see if we can make this happen so quickly for anyone who is interested. For now this is open to current 7th and 8th graders and there are fundraising options available especially if we get a group together quickly. Please contact Georgina Levey (glevey@aspenk12.net) for more information.
The informational meeting will be October 9th at 5:30 in Georgina’s room (2-137) in the 5th grade core at AMS.
