Dear Sherrelwood Families,

Thank you so much to everyone who took the time last week to connect with our teachers during Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences. It was wonderful seeing our hallways and classrooms filled with families! In our competency-based learning model, partnering closely with you is essential to celebrating where each student is thriving and identifying their next steps for growth, and we truly enjoyed sharing your student's progress so far this year.

It is hard to believe that November is already here and that we are just three short weeks away from Thanksgiving Break!

This week brings several great opportunities to connect and engage with our Sherrelwood community:

  • Coffee with the Principal [Tuesday, 8:00–9:00 AM]: Join me for coffee, informal conversation, and school updates. If you have questions or feedback to share but are unable to make it in person, please feel free to complete the Feedback Form linked at the bottom of this newsletter.

  • Sherrelwood PTO Meeting [Thursday, 2:00–3:00 PM)]: We will be gathering to plan our upcoming community events for November and December. Your voice and ideas make a tremendous difference for our school, and all are welcome!

  • Westy High School Mentorship Visit [Friday]: We will close out the week with an exciting visit from Westminster High School students, who will be spending time teaching our Tigers valuable lessons in leadership and financial literacy.

Thank you for your continuous support, partnership, and dedication to our students. Here’s to a wonderful week ahead!

Family Engagement Tip: Keep the Learning Conversation Going

Following our Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences, now is the perfect time to build on the goals and progress discussed with your child's teacher. In a competency-based learning environment, growth is an ongoing journey focused on mastering skills at each student's personal pace rather than simply completing tasks.

Try this simple, 3-step conversation at home this week:

  1. Reflect Together on Strengths: Share a specific compliment or highlight from their conference (e.g., "Your teacher shared how confident you've become when solving word problems!"). Ask your student what they felt proudest of learning so far this year.

  2. Revisit One Growth Goal: Ask, "What is one skill you are excited to keep practicing this month?" Focusing on just one target skill helps keep learning motivating, measurable, and achievable.

  3. Connect to Real Life: With our Westy High mentors visiting to teach financial literacy and leadership, extend that thinking at home! Involve your child in simple everyday decisions—like budgeting a small grocery item or discussing what it means to be a positive leader and role model at school and home.

Remember: Learning is not about how quickly we get there, but about building confidence, curiosity, and mastery along the way!
