DKHS WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
"Do A Job"
NOVEMBER 8, 2024
Principal's Post
This was a week that reminded me again of why I love this place so much. The week started with a literal dark cloud over our campus when we started Monday with the tragic fire at Smith & Doster stunning us all. Not only has that business been a staple in our community for generations, but they have been proud supporters of our kids in so many ways. Current family owners Mike (1979) and Jan (1980) Smith are both proud graduates of DKHS and have given so much over the years sponsoring teams, donating resources, and even partnering with our new Work Based Learning program to get kids some job training. We are so thankful no one was injured in the fire and stand by ready to help in any way we can as a school community.
We are grateful for the quick response and actions of so many school personnel in getting kids away from the elementary building and then quickly organizing all the transportation details to get kids home safely. Then to close out the week we hosted our annual Veteran’s Day Assembly where we honor our military veterans and active duty personnel. Some of the same folks who started the week serving our community fighting the fire were here on Friday as we honored their commitment and paid tribute to their service as veterans also.
On Thursday we had some of our sophomores attend the SAC Leadership Summit in Coloma where they interacted with students from all 18 teams in our league and learned from Craig Hillier from Winning Edge Seminars. Craig is a national speaker on leadership and sportsmanship and our kids left with a new appreciation for their role and leadership opportunities to make a difference in the culture of our schools. Olivia Post, Mallory Momenee, Mendan Phillips, Travis Mosqueda, and Tucker Tack were the DK representatives.
Our DK Theatre group has been working feverishly to be ready to perform their fall play. Aladdin opens tonight at 7 PM with shows at 3 and 7 PM on Saturday also. Come out and enjoy the show and support these kids. Tickets are still available for $7 for students and $10 for adults. On Friday some of our FFA and Ag Science kids went with 5 of our chickens to the processing plant in Fowlerville to see that part of the process. Our chickens were purchased after processing by local families.
This week’s Hogie’s Heroes are the 5 sophomores who represented DK at the SAC Leadership Summit in Coloma. Olivia, Mallory, Tucker, Mendan, and Travis, we appreciate your willingness to step up and DO A JOB in the area of being leaders.

TNR Machine Visit
On Wednesday Nov 6th, students from DKHS went on a field trip to TNR Machine in Dowling. Owner Tom Watson took students on a tour of the machine shop, CAD stations, and new robotics equipment building. Tom explained the process of making various metal parts that get delivered all over the world. Students were also able to laser engrave their own key tags.
Poultry Processing Contest
Five students from Delton Kellogg head toward Fowlerville for the Poultry Processing contest. Students learned about the farm to table process and got to engage with the staff at Munsell's. This was shortly after students ate chicken nuggets at the local McDonald's. If you're interested in purchasing one of our chickens, please contact Ms. Hebenstreit at patricia.hebenstreit@dkschools.org.
