Things You "Otter" Know: November/ December 2025 Edition
๐ From the Desk of Mrs. Phelan
Dear WRES Families,
It is hard to believe that we already find ourselves entering November. The upcoming months are a wonderful opportunity to focus on what truly matters: family and friends, kindness, joy, and thankfulness. As we prepare for the upcoming holidays, let's remember to take a few moments each day to reflect on all the good things in our lives and to look for ways to spread a little extra happiness to those around us. A simple act of kindness, like helping a neighbor, sharing a smile, or saying "thank you," can make a huge difference in someone's day!
The holiday season is also a time to support our whole school family. We understand that sometimes families face extra challenges during this time. If your family, or a family you know in our WRES community, is facing difficulties and could use support this holiday season, please reach out to us. Your message will be kept confidential, and we are here to help connect families with resources. Please feel free to call the main office or send a private email to your child's teacher, our nurse, or adjustment counselors.
Finally, I want to express my personal and deepest thanks. I am so thankful for our dedicated staff who work tirelessly every day to create a positive and nurturing learning environment for our students! I am thankful for all of you, our families, for your incredible support and partnership in your children's education; we couldn't do it without you! And most importantly, I am thankful to have the most incredible students to work with each day; their energy, curiosity, and bright smiles are what make Westfield River a truly special place. I wish you all a safe, warm, and happy holiday season!
Thank you for sharing your children with us!
Mrs. Phelan
All donations collected will go to the Westfield Food Panty!
๐ฎ From the Desk of Mr. Manfredi
Dear Westfield River Families,
As the days get cooler and fall turns to winter, please remember to send your child to school dressed for the weather. Warm coats, hats, and gloves help keep everyone comfortable during recess and arrival times. These next two months are busy and exciting months filled with learning, gratitude, and fun seasonal activities. Thank you for your continued support in helping our students stay healthy, happy, and ready to learn!
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions at all. Thank you for helping our students stay warm, healthy, and ready to learn. Happy Holidays!
Warmly,
Christopher Manfredi

๐ค Nurse's Corner
๐ Happy Holidays from Your School Nurse! ๐
Welcome to the end of the year! This is a busy time, but it's also the perfect opportunity to
reinforce healthy habits. Here is some important information from the Health Office.
November Focus: Cold & Flu Season Awareness
๐คง Stay Healthy: Fighting the Cold and Flu
We are officially in the height of the cold and flu season. The best defense is a good offense!
โ Handwashing Heroes: Remind your child to wash their hands often with soap and
water for at least 20 seconds (singing the "Happy Birthday" song twice usually does the
trick!). If soap and water aren't available, use hand sanitizer.
โ Catch the Cough: Teach your child to cough or sneeze into their elbow or a tissue, not
their hands.
โ When to Stay Home: Please review the school's guidelines for when a student should
stay home sick. A general rule is: keep your child home if they have a fever of 100.0 or
higher, are vomiting, or have diarrhea.
โ๏ธ Rest and Fuel Up
A strong immune system starts with good habits:
โ Sleep: Elementary-aged children need 9-12 hours of sleep per night.
โ Hydration: Continue to encourage water, even if it's cold outside.
โ Nutrition: Offer a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables to ensure they get essential
vitamins.
Winter Safety Reminders ๐งฃ
โ Dress for the Weather: Even if the sun is shining, winter air can be biting. Please
ensure your child wears a warm coat, hat, mittens/gloves, and a scarf on cold days,
especially for outdoor recess or waiting for the bus. Label all items with their name!
โ Playground Safety: Remind children that playground equipment, especially metal, can
be very cold and should be touched carefully. If we have snow or ice, please remind
them to walk, not run, to prevent slips and falls.
In Good Health,
Nurse Carlene
