Superintendent's Weekly Update

March 1, 2024
Dear Weymouth Public Schools Community,
On Monday we welcomed all our students and staff back to school for the first week following the winter break. I trust that this break provided everyone with the opportunity to recharge and reconnect with family and friends. As we resume our academic endeavors, let us carry forward the energy and enthusiasm that the new year brings. I encourage all students to approach the upcoming weeks with dedication and a commitment to their studies. Let us make the most of the remaining academic year together.
As a reminder, registration for our preschool program is now open for the upcoming academic year. If you have a child who will be eligible for preschool in the upcoming year, I encourage you to register them as soon as possible to secure their place in our program. For registration details and requirements, please visit our district website or contact Johnson Early Childhood Center at 781-335-0191.
Similarly, kindergarten registration for the next academic year is now underway with an April 1st deadline. If your child will be entering kindergarten in the upcoming year, please ensure their timely registration to ensure a smooth transition into our kindergarten program. Detailed registration information can be found on our district website or by contacting our Family Engagement Center at 781-335-1460 ext 28324.
If you have any questions or require assistance with the registration process, please do not hesitate to reach out to our dedicated staff members.
Thank you for your continued support of our school district. Together, we will continue to strive for excellence in education and provide our students with the resources and opportunities they need to succeed.
Warm regards,
Robert Wargo

Chapman Middle School
This week's video was produced by 6th graders Camilla and Debbie in Chapman's Expeditionary Lab taught by Mr. Dreyfus. In this digital art and video class, students work in teams where they decide on a cultural icon to research, compile facts, find pictures from the web, edit the images, and create their own voice over. Upcoming projects will incorporate green screen editing and special effects as well as more advanced audio editing.

Murphy Elementary School
Murphy School is excited to celebrate Read Across America during the month of March and we will welcome guest readers from throughout our community. We will also involve our students and families in a "Masked Reader" series. Each night, we will post a new chapter from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory read by a different "masked" school staff member. Families can watch and listen together and then guess the identity of the reader. Copies of the book will be awarded as prizes during this fun activity.

Weymouth High School
The JED Foundation conducted a site visit to Weymouth High School on Thursday, February 29th as a step in the 3-year partnership that has been established to assess the mental health resources and support systems available to students, faculty, and staff. The site visit was a collaborative effort between the JED Foundation’s Krystal Skaggs and Jim Johnson, the co-founder of KyleCares. Through KyleCares, named in honor of his son Kyle who lost his life to suicide in 2018, Jim has been a driving force in advocating for comprehensive mental health services in educational institutions and beyond.
Krystal and Jim met with a steering committee composed of teachers, paraprofessionals, counselors, and administrators. They toured the high school facilities, delighted in lunch at the Wildcat Cafe, and engaged in comprehensive discussions around effectiveness of existing programs, identified areas for improvement, and initial recommendations for enhancing mental health support services. Information gathered from the student survey (December 2023), staff survey (December 2023), self-assessment and site visit will culminate in a strategic plan that will serve as a roadmap for how WHS can strengthen the mental health supports and resources available to students, staff, and families.
We look forward to sharing more about this important work in the coming months!
