Foussat Language Academy

Week of August 31-September 4
Principal's Message
Dear Foussat Language Academy Families
With temperatures continuing to be high this week, our team is monitoring conditions closely to ensure students stay safe, cool, and hydrated. We will adjust outdoor recess and physical education according to district heat protocols, utilizing shaded areas and air conditioned indoor spaces as needed.
To help us keep your child comfortable and safe throughout the school day, you may want to send your child with a labeled water bottle and apply broad-spectrum sunscreen. As a reminder, closed toe shoes remain required for playground safety, no flip flops, crocs, or sandals.
Vision and Hearing Screenings
Vision and hearing screenings will take place on September 15 & 16 for the following students:
New students to OUSD
Students with an IEP
TK and Kindergarten students
2nd-grade students
5th-grade students
Screening results will be uploaded to the studentโs Medical/Health section. If a student shows a need for vision or hearing support, the district nurse will contact the parent/caregiver directly.
Please contact the Health Office if you have any questions.
Beginning on Monday, TK and Kindergarten students will be on the regular day schedule. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday dismissal is at 2:10pm. On Wednesday dismissal is at 12:25pm.
- Label Student Belongings: As students settle into their routines, please remember to label all student belongings with your child's first and last name. This includes water bottles, lunch boxes, jackets, sweaters, backpacks, and other personal items. Clearly labeled belongings make it much easier for us to return misplaced items to their owners
With gratitude,
Mrs. Akao, Principal &
Mrs. Edson, Assistant Principal

๐ Morning Arrival - Car Drop-Off & Pick-Up
For Safety of all our students and families, we ask that parents and guardians drive slowly and carefully through all parking areas and during student pick up and drop-off.
๐ School arrival is between 7:45โ8:15 AM.
Students should arrive on campus during this time and go directly to their designated area.
For everyone's safety, students are expected to follow all school rules and safety expectations while traveling to and from school.
Please help us keep our arrival and dismissal process moving safely and efficiently.
When dropping off or picking up by car:
- ๐ Use the right lane for student drop-off and pick-up.
- โก๏ธ Drive forward as far as possible before your child exits or enters the vehicle.
- ๐ช Students should enter or exit the vehicle quickly through a right-side door.
- ๐ Drivers must remain in their vehicles during drop-off and pick-up.
- ๐ถ Please use sidewalks and crosswalks and remind your children to do the same.
- All TK and Kindergarten students should continue to be walked to the primary gate everyday, unless they are with older siblings. Children need to be able to independently exit and enter the car.
All individuals who pick up students before or after dismissal MUST:
- park in a parking space before coming into the office
- be an authorized contact in AERIES
- show identification
- sign out the student
To help ensure a safe and smooth dismissal, please pick up your child at the same designated location each day. If your child's dismissal routine changes, please notify the teacher and/or school office by email or in writing before school begins so staff can make the necessary arrangements.

Move This World
Last semester, Foussat had the pleasure of piloting a new classroom social-emotional learning curriculum called Move This World. This year, the program is being used at every OUSD elementary school. You can practice these social-emotional skills with your child at home by taking advantage of the family account!

Previous Reminders
There is much more information available to support you throughout the school year. We have attached our Parent/Guardian Handbook (English) on which serve as a helpful reference for school policies, procedures, programs, and supports.
The handbook includes information about school hours and calendars, arrival and dismissal, attendance, health services, communication, behavior expectations, student supports, dress code, visitors and volunteers, field trips, electronic devices, and more. We encourage families to review the handbook and keep it available as a resource throughout the year.
We know there is a lot of information to take in at the beginning of the year, so we will continue to share important reminders throughout the school year. For now, please focus on the arrival and safety procedures shared in this newsletter, and use the Parent/Guardian Handbook as your go-to resource for additional information.

E-Bike Safety
All OUSD students who plan to ride and park an E-Bike on any district campus will need to go through the free E-Bike process. This helps promote safe biking habits and ensures students are prepared to ride responsibly to and from school and school-sponsored events.
Please note: Only middle and high school students will receive a permit sticker to park their E-Bike on campus.
Steps to follow:
Complete a liability waiver- completed in data confirmation
Take the OUSD-approved E-Bike Safety Course (CHP Online Certification)
Submit the Online Bicycle Permit Application with a parent or guardian
(Recommended) Register the E-Bike for free on Project 529 in case it is lost or stolen.
E-Bike Safety (AB 544):
New Requirement: All E-bikes are now required to have a red reflector or red rear light (solid or flashing) visible from 500 feet at all times.
Thank you for supporting student safety in our school community!
Safety Tips for Pedestrians and Bicyclists
Arrival & Dismissal Safety
Please follow all posted signs and staff directions during pick-up and drop-off. Use designated lanes, avoid double parking, and stay alert for students crossing. Your cooperation helps keep everyone safe. Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety
- Use marked crosswalks and follow traffic signals.
- Make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
- Wear a properly fitted helmet when riding a bicycle or e-bike.
- Ride with traffic, obey signs and signals, and use lights or reflective gear when visibility is low.
- Drivers should watch for pedestrians and cyclists, yield when required, and allow safe passing distance.
