MESSAGE FROM THE K8 PROGRAMS DIRECTOR

We made it through our first quarter together and the first 9 weeks feels like it just flew by! Our first family engagement event was a huge success during our Fall Festival and we are gearing up for a fabulous Winter Program! Field Trips, Salmon Eggs, Art projects, and many more exciting things are truly impacting our school year in the most awesome ways. Thank you for letting us be such a huge part of your scholar's lives each and every day!

As we move into the second quarter, our hope is to connect with families and be able to provide more opportunities for connection and support as we now have a good idea of what our scholars need academically. Please be on the lookout for a Family Canvas Night, where we will have an in-depth session to show families how to navigate Canvas courses and task completion!

Lastly, Fall Conferences are just around the corner, and our goal is to meet with 100% of our families. The conference sign up will be similar to the process we used during our Back to School Meetings (with a couple tweaks) being scheduled through Google and communicated from your scholar's teacher/advisor through ClassTag.

Thank you for partnering with us to serve your scholar. We are excited to see what the next quarter holds and the growth that continues to take place each day!

Respectfully,

- Elizabeth

CLA Career Chat - Nick Card

Our 2nd CLA Career Chat was with Nick Card. Nick serves as the Vice President of Operations for Combined Transport Inc. Not only was Nick engaging, but we heard several scholars throughout the rest of the day mention that they might be interested in the trucking industry one day. Some were intrigued not simply by the idea of driving a truck, but also the idea of serving in a role that supports trucking. Thank you Nick Card for coming to share your career journey!

Red Ribbon Week

During the week of October 23-27th, we highlighted Red Ribbon Week and were visited by Corporal Bilden from the Jackson County Sheriffs Office. He discussed the power of decision making and areas in our scholar's lives that may offer times for solid decision-making skills. Cpl Bilden shared about the function of the OODA (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act) Loop and ways to incorporate the decision-making acronym it into our 4th-8th graders daily lives. Thank you Corporal Bilden for the visit in helping our scholars remain drug-free!

Twisted Teacher Day!

On October 16th, weld held our first "Twisted Teacher Day". The Leadership class decided that our campus needed a little mix up, so they created a scavenger hunt for classes to find the "Golden Compass". To make things more fun, teachers were mixed up and were leading classrooms that they don't normally get to see. Yes, this meant that some of our middle school teachers were leading a K5 class and some of our K5 teachers were leading a middle school class. The event took place in the afternoon, and two golden compasses were found!

Explorers of the month are recognized during the monthly assembly. Teachers and staff select scholars who display the monthly character trait and surprise them during the assembly.

Fall Family-Teacher Conferences | November 20th & 21st

We are gearing up to host our Fall Family-Teacher Conferences on November 20th and 21st. We will be using the similar process for signing up for conferences that we did during our Back to School Meetings where families choose a specific time slot (we've worked some kinks out ;).

Our goal is to meet with 100% of our families, so please be sure to attend your appointment with your scholar and let's continue to partner together to make this year a great one!

November Monthly Character Trait | Gratitude

Each month CLA will focus on demonstrating a school-identified character trait. Scholars will be selected as "Explorer of the Month" based on these traits and be recognized for their accomplishments.

November's character trait highlight is "Gratitude."

Please take time to discuss with your scholar what it means to be kind.

  • Definition: "Being thankful and showing appreciation for and to return kindness "
  • Question: "How do you choose to show gratitude at CLA?"

Coffee & Energy Drinks On Campus

Please refrain from sending your scholar to school with coffee stand beverages and energy drinks. Many of these containers get spilled and create lasting damage to carpeted areas.

Scholars entering campus will be asked asked to finish them before entering the classroom space in order to keep our school looking (and smelling) its absolute best!

Thank you for your support in this area!

Early PM Pick Up/Messages During the School Day

The protocol for picking up students early is as follows:
  • Emergency Notifications- Please contact the office no later than 1:30pm to provide adequate time for the office to contact the classroom
  • Please let your student know the after school plans or how they are being picked up early before they come to school to limit interruptions in the classroom throughout the day

With instruction being important, we are asking that families refrain from pulling scholars out of class early (prior to their release time) so they may interact with content as much as possible. Thank you so much for partnering with us to ensure our Explorers receive the most out of their learning time!!!

College & Career Gear Days

CLA will be focusing on providing experiences for our scholars by exposing them to different careers. We will have community speakers visit throughout the year and share the path they used to get to their career, whether it was through attending college/university, trade school, or through a different path our scholars will get to engage and ask questions!

With that, on the first Thursday of each month, our Explorers and staff will wear College/University gear (logo t-shirts, lanyards, hats, etc) or wear/dress in the Career they hope to be or would like to highlight. Example: if a scholar is hoping to be a firefighter in the future and they have an outfit, they are encouraged to wear it on this day!

Our hope is that we begin encouraging our Explorers think about their future!
